How Did Too Human & Afrika Fare In Japan?
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 7:40 AM on September 5, 2008
Well, Afrika certainly outperformed the Silicon Knights-developed import; the PlayStation 3 safari game nabbed the number two spot, behind another solid week by Rhythm Tengoku Gold. Too Human debuted at #17, higher than the week's other new Xbox 360 entry, Clannad.
In other news, the latest Fire Emblem for the DS rebounded after an off-week, with Square-Enix's Sigma Harmonics showing no signs of recovery. Oh, and some people bought Battlefield: Bad Company.

@UltimateIdiot: It's only like P-snap in that you take pictures... In that way, Dead rising and Fatal Frame are like P-snap too... No, it's not a rail photography game like P-snap, you have a little bit more freedom to walk around and take your pictures, even though some of it IS on a jeep.
@Fryfat2: They only ruin the gaming industry when they make those non-games the focus of their gaming division like another company does.
@Lazlo: Hakuna Matata is a saying in one of the major African languages... Swahili, maybe? I don't remember. Disney doesn't own that any more than they own the term "magic" though they're always on about how magical their movies and theme parks are.

@tonka_92: You have to mate different species of animals to produce hybrids that you can use as RTS pieces in a persistent MMORTS game. It's quite robust and is hosted on PS3 DEDICATED server farms. The best part of the game is that you can trade your creatures by emailing character cards you customize over the net or even use the EyeToy to scan it in. There's a remote play feature that allows you to level up using the PSP and you can even level up when your not playing your PSP as long as it remains connected to the PS3. One of the killer features of the game is it's functionality with home. when you buy your apartment in home, If you have Afrika installed on your Hard Drive then the patio on your home apartment has a panoramic view of the savanna with all your animals roaming in it. Other home players can have an African safari through your world and even leave gifts.
...You can also take pictures of animals but who cares about that shit when you can do all the stuff above. Day One Purchase!

Change the word "American" to "Westernized" and I think you'll see what he was implying. It's clear that Westerners favor that genre over most others, just like it's clear a mech/robot game would be considered a "Japanese style game".

@Candlejack: I doubt that I would call Afrika a niche title. It is probably the most advertised PS3 game ever in Japan. Yeah, more advertisements than MGS4. Still not Nintendo or Monster Hunter level but if you ever needed a proof that advertising works, this is it.

By the way, did anybody notice that there are as many PS3 titles in the top 25 as there are XBox titles. Ok XBox titles are MUCH lower, but considering the humilating sales that ain't a bad result. Maybe all those that picked up an XBox for Tales of Vesperia bought another game ;)

While I appreciate that Clannad's doing well, my mind is still boggled at how a version for the X360 got approved. I mean, eroge on X360 would be the niche among the niche when it comes to games...

@gokieks: Well it is something that really sells in Japan, so maybe Microsoft has spent some money that was rather convincing. Or it is just that you can convert a PC title to a XBox title in minutes (well not really but compared to the PS3). Or it is just the lack of those titles, that appealed to the developers....

Well no. Japanese like to whore special edition stuff. I went to a Gundam Museum convention thing and one guy bought 1/10th of a certain model. Needless to say he didn't seem to need help carrying all those boxes to the register. ToV was special edition and a few guys probably bought most of them and are trying to sell them for high prices now or later.
