Iron Chef Surprisingly Fun
Posted by Brian Crecente at 8:30 AM on September 1, 2008
Iron Chef America is unapologetically similar to Cooking Mama and Destineer is totally OK with that.
"Cooking Mama is like cooking with your friends and family at home," said Lisa Mason, the game's lead designer. "We wanted to do things that home cooks don't do: fillet whole fish, quarter chicken.
"The (TV) show is so ridiculous and we wanted to get that across in the game as well."
And while the game is based on the American version of the game, the developers also strove to include some of the wackiness that made the original Japanese show so much fun to watch.
The game will include 320 mini games, 15 themed ingredients and a 2,500 lines of dialog.
Playing around with the game I found it to be surprisingly fun. You use the Wii's motion controls to work your way through a batch of recipes, preparing food as the judges watch and Alton Brown talks colour. While the Wii game was amusing, the DS version is the one I think will really strike a chord with gamers.
Not only does it match the Wii version (but without all of that talking) it will sell for a paltry $US20 and include both pass the DS multiplayer and multi-card multiplayer.
The controls seemed tighter on the DS as well and there's something a bit more satisfying about slicing and dicing with stylus strokes as opposed to swiped in the air with a remote.

Yeeeaaah.... I still don't get why you would play a cooking game. The best bit of cooking, and the bit these games lack, is the EATING afterwards.

If I get to hack the heads off of giant fish, then I'm definitely getting this one. Not enough games let you do that. Allez cuisine!!

@Sam Smith: i agree. seeing the results onscreen saddens me. nevertheless, i still enjoy cooking games to give the illusion that i might have a knack for cooking.

@Sam Smith: But it's not a cooking game. It's a game based off a cooking show, and watching it you still don't get to eat the food.

What? No elitist comments about how Iron Chef America sucks yet?
I'm interested in this game. Much love for the Alton Brown.

I chuck in my elitist comment. Iron chef with no Kaga, Sakai, Michiba, Kinichi etc is like The office with no David Brent. Its not Iron Chef kids, its aluminum chef.

Wow... 2,500 lines of Dialog...
There's the second time in this day that I heard that a game has such number of dialog lines.
The first one was Half Life 2.
Are you telling me that a cooking game has as much dialog as Half Life 2?
Best game ever.

Hopefully it will bring more variety that the Japanese import "Bukake Chef" did. Damn thing only had one themed ingredient...

My girlfriend and I had fun with Cooking Mama, both on the Wii and the DS.
We'll be looking forward to this, as we're fans of the show. Hope we get to play as Bobby Flay (does he ever win any of the challenges?). LOL.

I'm only going to play if I can make ice cream out of -anything I want-. Okay, I might play even if I can't. But that would sell the game right there.

I doubt it will be as good as Iron Chef for the for the Sega Saturn. Oh btw it's not Iron Chef without Chairman Kaga.

I played this game for a few minutes at PAX, it does seem like a lot of fun! Unfortunately I have yet to play Cooking Mama, so I can't really compare the two.

If it's based on the original Japanese Iron Chef, then I'm in. If it's based on the incredibly crappy, watered down, copycat American version narrated by the pompous and unfunny Alton Brown, then chuck it in the trash.

Hey I was actually asking Brian before PAX started if he'd take a look at this. Not saying he looked at it for me but I'm glad someone did! =D
This looks like it'll work. A Licensed game that may turn out to be good. It doesn't have to be great mind you.
Alton Brown doing the commentary? And I saw Mark Dacascos' face on the screenshot before. Nice!
@dowingba: Well the game version surely won't take as long as doing the real one. So I guess the fun's still there.
Oh and seeing you're a chef and all. Do you think we'll learn something from this? Like filleting and whatnot? =D

Ah yes, because it's always funny on teh intarnets to wish DEATH upon somebody because they don't like the same TV shows you do.
I'd expect a vitriol-filled comment like this on YouTube, not here. And if it was meant as sarcasm, well, I guess I missed it.
