Molyneux Reviews Fable II, Scores It Out Of Ten
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:00 PM on September 2, 2008
If Peter Molyneux had to review Fable II, what score would he give it? Putting aside the fact that:
a) It's his own game
b) This is Peter Molyneux we're talking about
...it shouldn't surprise you that he loves the game. Says that, unlike every other game he's done recently, he hasn't chucked a whole bunch of crap into it and hoped it all came out OK at the other end. No, this one's got some polish. "It's the best, most complete game I've ever worked on", he says. So, what's his score?
CHatting with Xbox World 360 magazine, he says he'd give the game 9/10. Hopefully kick-starting a trend where all prominent developers rate their scores prior to release. Can't wait for Dude Huge's Gears 2 review!

This is only said about the past. Fable 1 was perfection and the best game you've made while making it, too.

Wow.... He's reviewing his own game before release. That's pretty sad. I think it will get under a 9/10. The way he talked about Fable, he made some poor souls believe it would be an 11/10 gaming revolution. No, Peter, that job belongs to developers like Hideo Kojima and Tetsuya Nomura. You are too eager to hype your own games into oblivion and pat yourself on the back. You're not a bad developer. You're just not fantastic. You're good. That's all.

Although it does show his modesty, as a consumer; I would be worried, if I expected this to be a Killer-ap. IMO, a killer-ap usually means a developer putting his fullest into the game itself. A 9 tells me that it's a great game but he couldn't do all that he could to make it how he wanted it to. Which means it's not the killer-ap sorta game and instead a great solid title, which is still pretty darn good. And yes I expected Fable 2 to be a killer-ap. A little disappointed but still looking forward to this title a whole lot.

Let's get started on the corporate self-rating!
a 10 says "we made the best game possible." A 9 says "we made a good game..." an 8 says "We fucking hate our company, but can't find better jobs at the moment." a 7 says "Fire us. Please." Everything below that says "Make me the fall-guy when the blame comes around."

I have to give it to Peter Molyneux, the guy knows how to market his games. In my opinion, he is one of the best hype setters in the business. Even though he went overboard and talked Fable up to the point that the final version played nothing like what he had promised, the game still did pretty well, and people are still extremely excited for Fable II, knowing full well the first one was not close to what he wanted it to be.
I also think he genuinely cares about what he does and puts his heart into his work. I definitely respect him as a developer. He has always made good games, not exceptionally great, but nevertheless good. Hopefully Fable II will be the really great game he has been longing to create.

I think some of you guys are being a little hard on Peter. I mean when he started Fable 2 he came out saying he now knew to be a bit more realistic when talking about his games. He has been pretty good in keeping the greatest game ever talk down. He slips every now and then but its because he is excited about his project. Frankly I think more developers should be throwing themselves and their excitement into their games.

I have only ever played 2 games that were worthy of a 10/10. I have yet to ever play another game that is a 10/10. Several games have come close, but they're always lacking something. It's nice to see him rate his game 9/10 instead of the expected 10/10, but I really think more reviewers need to use the entire spectrum in their scores. We're at a point here where a lot of big name hyped games are guaranteed at least an 8 no matter how many shortcomings they have. People tend to forget about 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

I guess rating your own material is different from person to person. My forte is writing, or even when I've directed something between friends or acted in it, I'm a perfectionist for my own work. I am my harshest critic, mainly because I took use of a quote that Quentin Tarantino threw around back in the day and read/look at what I come up with as someone else, almost as if I didn't write it. I'd be the first to see all the problems with it (I'd point them out too) and the first to say what I created sucks. I can and have done that, as well as promoting writing I think is my best (which comes across completely differently to people than saying it sucks).
Having said that, I understand it's an entirely new ballpark when you are backed by a studio and have put in millions of dollars and thousands of man hours. It's business, so it is to be expected.

Well, okay, this could mean a lot of things. I think that it most likely means that, compared to what he's saying and what he dreamed of it to be, it's a 9/10. Compare that to the original Fable's probably 5/10 on hype-fulfillment and you've got a pretty beastly game.
In all honesty though, I don't think I've seen a 10/10 game this generation. That's not saying that Fable IS a 9/10 on my scale even, since I haven't played it, but I'm just saying; for all the fun I've had this gen (because there HAVE been a lot of fun, great games), I haven't been utterly ASTOUNDED as I have in past generations. I guess is has a lot to do with the fact that nothing in this gen CHANGED really, except for the Wii's change, which I don't care for.

Oh man, you totally win this thread.
Also, given today's typical review scores where every game needs to get 10/10, a measly 9/10 probably makes this game the Xbox 360's Carnival Games.

Didn't he say that Fable II was about a billion times more advanced than Black and White?

I never though anyone could live with his head up in the ass, but Peter Molyneux has showed me the truth. 11/10.
@sqoon: Hahhahaha So true!.

The guy has always been on the top spots of my "most overrated game designer" list. Every since the huge disappointment of Black&White.

@AZRockslide: Right. The headline sure does get your attention and hits.
Too bad the resulting backlash is bolstered by the kotaku article about the actual article.
Gotta love headline misunderstandings . . .

@Alucrid: Well done. That only took about 20 or so commenters to realize that.

I really dislike Molyneux for similar reasons as others, but this is what he should have said. If he said 8/10, everyone would think that the game sucks, if he said 10/10 he'd come off as incredibly arrogant. Hell, the game probably will get roughly a 9/10 from most critics anyways.

I'll give his strange likeness to a mouse a 9 out of 10
