New FIFA 09 Video Explains Adidas Live Season
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 10:00 AM on September 4, 2008
Back at GC in Leipzig we told you about the Live Season System, a nifty little feature that will be showing up in FIFA 09. From the video this looks pretty promising. The Live Season System allows you to follow your favourite player through his real career and the game will update weekly accordingly. The catch? You'll have to subscribe to each league or all of them in a package and unfortunately, only the first week is free.

His Austrian accent does make it sound almost like 'week', easy mistake.

It's not just the first week, it's the first league, according to this guy.

This doesn't make sense, so let's say Rooney played bad that week, so I'm stuck with a bad Roonery throughout the week?

All i want to know is if they are going to include the lower English leagues in the game. I'm a Plymouth Argyle fan and they are in the Championship. I'd rather keep playing Fifa 08 and play with my home team than play 09.

Honestly, this should be included in the game. We are paying high prices for games at is, now we have to do micro-transactions to get weekly updated info. EA is back at it again, just when you think they are moving away from being evil, they just do a 180 and come right back.

This sounds like a great idea, but will EA stop the service when FIFA 2010 comes out?

PES 09 for me. Is good to see new features like this on Fifa 09 but to charge for that, screw them.

Not a feature I'd even want I don't think, but I'm thinking about making the jump to Fifa09 over PES09 after Konami's abortion of an online component in the 08 version.

Do you expect anything less from EA. Sure they have made some turn-around this year with innovative new franchises, but they are still up to their old tricks. Too bad about T2.

you guys are teh nubz if you think this feature sucks. okay it kinda sucks because you have to pay for it, but people that have been playing soccer games always look forward to these roster updates. except they used to be fan made and therefore, free.
i think it just depends on your individual situation. are you willing to pay or not? if not, okay, but it's not ea's fault for offering this "new" feature. we'll just have to wait and see how much this thing ends up costing.

lol, PAY for it, what is the point of that who on earth would waste money like that. Seems like a pretty useless feature to me let alone a feature that's an add-on.

In theory this sounds amazing. Constantly updating statistics, real life effects on the game etc etc...
I think however there is a real downfall here too. Essentially your game experience will be directly affected by something you have absolutely no control over. I'd much rather have a great in game system that published and brought to the forefront when teams and players are playing well as opposed to real life data affecting my own personal gameplay experience.
An example; what happens if say in my career, I have Rooney and he plays amazing for me as a gamer as my skill level is high. Is this then trumped by his own form in real life (which to be fair has been average at best)? Do you punish the user for something they have no control over?

Price will be the deciding factor for me. I won't pay 800 points for it, anything below 600 will have me tempted and 400 will sell it.

if it was a weekly payment thing, then yeah, definitely no a cool feature. But since he said "the first league is free" thats fine with me. I usually only ever focus my attention on the premier league anyway.

Why should we pay for something which is free in other EA games.. they're just renaming dynamic DNA that they introduced in the other games and asking to pay for it.. what a ripoff!!

It's the first LEAGUE. And no, they are not just renaming Dynamic DNA. Pretty clear if you watch the video that they talk about how massive the database of soccer stats is going to have to be compared to the NBA which has only 30 teams and smaller rosters. With your first free LEAGUE, you are getting exactly what you get in NBA Live's Dynamic DNA. Not rocket science.

Wait... is this for manager mode too? what if i trade, say Kaka to arsenal.. will he not be updated because i've only got the premier league pack?

well the feature is cool but charging for it not so much; then agan this is EA so no surprise there. too bad because i would have loved to have updates about Kaka and AC Milan since we are most likely going to win the Champiosn League :P

@Flakundenga: Ac Milan floped last year buddy. They're not in the Champions League. They finished 5th in Serie A, Fiorentina finished 4th.
And poor Kaka, if they update him, will they also put in his knee problems?

@Pornosaur: The one downside with Fifa online is the insane amount of quitters, due to there being no punishment for quitting. Drives you crazy. But online is much less broken than Pro Evo lately.
And as for charging, that is bullshit. I'd like to know if we can do 11 v 11 yet online. That will be fantastic.

erm... why are they charging, for just updating a few numbers.. yes understand it's very time consuming, but i've seen bigger updates done for free... so the pricing will be very interesting

With one entire league free I think only the completionists will actually pay for the service in order to get all the leagues. I see no problem with them charging for weekly, real life, roster updates on over 1000 players.
What would be cool is if there was an option to NOT update our own team, so your competition would evolve 'naturally' while your own team would be based on how well you play.

I love this feature and the football fan within me is more than happy to download and pay or it (well, the Prem, La Liga and Serie anyways) I would just like to see how much their charging per week per league for this before I make my decision.
Btw, is there a demo coming to PSN anytime soon?

@Makeda: The demo should be out on September 11th
I welcome this new feature. It'll help make playing your team different every time, make things more challenging if your team is down in real life. I can understand why they would charge for this service, especially since its updating every week (this would be a pretty awesome job, watch futbol all day)! Of course the amount of $$ they charge will be the deciding factor.
Unfortunately the only two teams I ever see and play online are Manchester United and Barcelona...

This is a great feature and the game has now become a must buy for me. Can't wait to use it and see Keane's hopeful imrpovements through the season in game for Liverpool.

@Makeda: $5.95 per league for the whole year (after your first FREE one). Or all of them for $24.95 I believe.

This is really cool, but I hope it's just a ONE time deal, not a per year... WELL, don't they make one of these games every year? I hope you get it free if you paid the last game. I wish it was free. Or just a one time payment then you get the service for no cost forevers.
