Prelude Proves Portal Is Still Alive
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 5:20 AM on September 18, 2008
Are you still feeling bad about that whole Weighted Companion Cube incident? Still pining for it's friendly, rounded corners? A new mod promises to take you back in time to before the events of the original Portal, when your little inert buddy was still free to.. remain motionless.
And what a mod - Portal: Prelude is huge, actually bigger than the original game. It has 8 new chapters, 19 test chambers, a new plot and over 400 lines of dialogue (with English and French subtitles!).
You will need Steam, a copy of Portal and possibly some other bits and bobs like Counter Strike Source - the developers have, rather endearingly, forgotten.
This trailer should give a taster of what to expect when the game is released later this month...
Portal: Prelude[www.portalprelude.com thanks to Greg H for the tip]

@lordofsword: On PC, yeah, but what about XBox? With the heavy DLC focus of XBL there's a lot of room there for some user-created content in games just like this. Farcry supplied a rudimentary level editor, which would've been more than sufficient for most of what you see in Portal... and the ability to hop into a user-created level/puzzle would've been HAWT.

Since this isn't an official add-on, is anyone else worried about the voice acting?
I mean, 400 lines of dialogue is cool and all, but I shudder to think of some amateur VA attempting to mimic the original GlaDOS.
I can respect the amount of work put in here, but the use of Linkin Park in the trailer makes me wonder if this is going to be a huge, steaming pile of terrible voice acting and LOL COMPANION CUBE CAKE IS A LIE XD.

@kicking222: @SAKY:
Ok, I really like portal and probably put too many hours into it so my opinion on difficulty is more biased than a ninja gaiden master... but
I mean I know that those tricks look fancy, but once you understand the idea, they dont really take much skill or dexterity. Not only that, theres always save-state, which makes all things manageable. In my opinion, figuring out what to do is much harder than actually doing it. Which I think is the key to the funnitude of it all. Also you had to chain 4 or 5 portals together in the original a few times.

Looks SWEET!!! I just hope it has a good portion of GlaDOS in it. Judging by the shot of the guys in a monitor room, I'd guess this is like the move Cube 3, where you find out about the people behind the project.

I agree that as awesome as some of the moves you can do in Portal are, it's a little unnecessary to make a super complex prequel. Virgin Portal required just as much thinking outside of the box and lateral thinking as it did twitch shooting. Of course, PC FPSers who tore the game to fucking shreds with insane speed runs and exploiting the game's rules and level designs might be the intended audience.
I would assume that (this being a prelude and all) that this takes place during or before she flooded the Aperture Science labs with deadly neurotoxin. Would that make it less or more dangerous?

While this, obviously, looks awesome, my one and only concern from watching that trailer (aside from not being able to play it, since I own The Orange Box for 360) is that some of the tricks pulled off look extremely complex. Now, if that's just to show off in the trailer, fine, but if some of the chambers actually require you to chain four or five portals together on the move, it might simply be too difficult for all but the most skilled of players. Now, if such skill is not required (or maybe required, y'know, once or twice at most), but can be used to traverse a level more easily, then that's A-OK. Either way, I certainly wish I could get my hands on this.

If Linkin Park isn't your thing, try watching the trailer without sound. I'd be interested in a prequel.
Just a general idea, multiplayer Portal. It wouldn't be deathmatch, it would have multiplayer races to the end. And co-op levels could be even crazier. As for the fan-made mod, good luck, hope it's well recieved. I'm not a PC gamer, so I likely won't play it.

So, um, why would you need a copy of Counter Strike Source to run this? Using a lot of CS resources is it?
What I would like to see in a good Portal prequel:
* Test chambers that are recognizable as chambers from the original game, but in a different configuration
* You get to be the one that breaks some of the equipment/leaves some of the graffiti that you find in the original game
* Get to watch GLaDOS first go insane, or at watch the techs deal with what we know will snowball into such?
Just some thoughts.

@HeadspaceCools: they did release the tools to make levels, as they have with all their games. It's the same level editor as all other Source games, which is difficult to use if you've never created levels before, but there's no way to simplify it.

I understand it's technically a mod, but it's not advertising itself as such. It's actually trying to market as "a copy of Portal, for those who thought it was too short."
I'm not saying it won't be fun - I am saying it won't be Portal. This is also why I don't read fanfiction.... which is essentially what this is. One big, giant, playble fanfic.

For those who thought you would need CS:S, here's something from their FAQ:
"What do i need to be able to play Portal: Prelude?
In order to play Portal: Prelude you need to have Steam installed on your system, of course. You also need to be the owner of Portal and probably either Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike Source, Day of Defeat Source or the Source SDK Base (which can be downloaded for free in the tools tab of Steam). In fact, I'm not really sure you need anything else than Portal, so I advise you to try and see, because there's no way I'm going to uninstall every Source game of my computer until it doesn't work anymore. Steam will notify you if something goes wrong..."
So it looks like you shouldn't...

Thing I don't like about most user made mods of Valve games is that the team at Valve is so good that you really can't make anything that is as good as the original. The custom portal levels, and subsequently the levels in this mod seem too cluttered and too hard to appeal to the amount of people that Portal did.
