Report: New Nintendo DS Coming This Year With Camera, Music Playback
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 2:30 PM on September 28, 2008
According to a report from Nikkei Net, Nintendo will introduce a new iteration of this Nintendo DS later this year, featuring a built-in camera and music playback. The new version of the DS is also reported to have improved wireless functions. Some versions of the report indicate the improved wireless capabilities will allow the new DS to connect to "information terminals," expanding the machine's non-gaming features.
The Japanese version of the report mentions that pictures taken via the DS's internal camera can be used by games, opening up new gameplay options.
Nikkei Net writes that the new version is "expected to be priced below 20,000 yen." The Nintendo DS Lite is currently priced at 16,800 yen in Japan. The new DS will launch first in Japan, with the country seeing an allocation of "several hundred thousand units" before any overseas sales.

Bigger screens and bigger A + B buttons please, then I would consider buying this as I don;t have my own DS Lite at the minute, I just steal my little brothers to play Final Fantasy IV and Tactics A2.
I'm able to use MP3's and a camera on my PSP, I've got both, but have yet to use either, I don't see the importance of these in a portable gaming console, and if they are built into the new DS, I doubt I'll ever use them.
But I'm sure there are people out there who DO use these things, and enjoy them, plus it give Nintendo more features to brag about, I'd use them if and only if, they are incorporated into games somehow, as this could open doorways to new innovative and interactive portable games.

Awesome. Cannot wait for this. It sounds like much more value for money than the current DS.
Question is, how are they going to market this to go up against the iPhone outside of Japan?

I'm still thinking about selling my current DS with the R4 card I have for it... I never use it, and handheld gaming seems dead to me... Plus the white DS looks too kiddish, I wish I got the black when I could've... Oh well... Who knows, I may just keep it, this news does nothin for me :P

not so much ago, i remember reading that the new DS will have 2 touch screens, and now theyre bringing this up.
This is a different upgrade than the last one. i dont have a DS lite because i didnt consider buying a new DS would bring too much change.
This, however, its a very different upgrade, and it seems to be very cheap also. The only thing I hope for is that we get a nice storage capacity. I dont really think that will be a problem, since Nintendo should have learned with the Wii storage issues.
If the storage is right and the DS current games are playable, Im totally buying it.

Also it needs to get a couple hundred thousand sales before they make it available in the US? Do they any idea how redundant that information is, they sell 700,000 DS Lites a month in Japan, so we have to wait a week?

If it's the former then it's way too soon. If it's the latter, and you can put your own music into a games sound track, then count me interested.

I know the latest trend is to make an all-in-one entertainment machine, but really, I'm happy with my DS just playing games.
I have an ipod and a camera. Why would I need my handheld system to do that too? It's bad enough I have a phone that is a music phone and don't have any music on it!
Heck, even my PSP is just for playing games.

I don't see what the inherent purposes are for a camera in a handheld. Seems like gimmickry to me, unless it's a full-fledged phone.
First time for everything, I guess. Doesn't seem like Nintendos stride to put something like that in a device they would manufacture.

I don't understand the logic of some people who think that gameplay on an iPhone equals to gameplay on the DS. Nintendo will always have its own special niche in the video game market that Apple will never be able to replace. As long as Nintendo keeps pumping out with new Marios we will always buy their new hardware.

It's Japan, people - they couldn't care less about the iPhone/Apple right now. However, there are plenty of other phones that have cameras and can play music, which is plenty enough reason to include said features in a DS update.

Ishaan
Posted 3:21 PM 28/9/08
@Xenigma: Actually, it's precisely because of the camera that I think this could be true.
Nintendo adds features once they think they are affordable enough for manufacturing on a large scale. They're also trying to be more mainstream with both Wii and DS. I think both music playback and camera functionality go a long way toward helping that.
Couple this with the multi-touch (where both screens are touch-sensitive) feature mentioned a few weeks ago, and I think it's very possible that all this info is, in fact, what the redesign will be.

That sounds horribly fake to me. Adding a camera and an MP3 player? Seriously? This is Nintendo we're talking about here: nothing about adding a camera or music playback screams innovation, which seems to be their current mantra. The new DS rumor where they eliminated the GBA port to produce a budget unit disappeared into thin air, and I expect this to do the same.

Posted 3:12 PM 28/9/08
@ca$h: If you'll recall, Sony actually stripped functionality OUT of the PS3 (hardware-based PS2 backwards compatibility), and Microsoft sold an HD-DVD player accessory until the format died.
If camera functionality and MP3 playback are the only new functions of this supposed new DS, those are rather significant changes, but they aren't necessary in order to play games. Anyone that wants those functions in their DSes would buy one, but unlike console firmware updates, upgrading to a DS with a camera isn't mandatory.

Posted 3:10 PM 28/9/08
@Mikey G: Short answer: YES.
Long answer: I bought a CycloDS partly to download games, but mainly as a means of expanding the DS functionality into the realm of a machine worth it's price. As one of the last 12 people on the planet without an ipod, the DS is my primary music device, and it's great for the road.
In regards to space on my 4 gig card:
90% is music
5% is games
5% is homebrew aps that make my life easier.
In regards to my DS use:
75% is listening to music on the road.
25% is playing games and using aps.
So when this new DS is released, will I buy it? Probably not, because my DS does just about the same as far as we know from these reports. But it's still a great option for non-pirates and people who'd like to have the DS do more than just play games.
Think of it this way: How many people buy cellphones to just make phone calls? How many current cellphones are only capable of making calls, and don't include other "bullshit"? This is a pretty logical next step short of the next gen Nintendo Handheld.
I should have called this the really long answer.

The only people that would buy this new DS are either people that don't yet have a DS or people that have DSes and would prefer to have the extra functionality of the newer hardware.

I'm thinking this won't see a release outside of Japan. There doesn't seem to be much point to the upgrade. The only thing that I'd honestly be looking forward to is the ability to connect to a WPA secured wireless internet connection, if that's indeed part of the enhanced wireless abilities (although it sounds like it's just information terminals, which, I'm pretty sure we don't even have here).

@Knoxximus (XBL/PSN): Oh god, yes. I hear you completely there. ^^
I have an all-in-one DSL modem/wireless router/switch device, and it unfortunately only has one profile... so every time I want to put my DS online, I have to switch it manually, as in re-entering the network data. Takes enough time that I don't even want to play online once I actually pull off what I was trying to do. ^^;
Worst part is, the DS is my only device that can't use any form of WPA... and WPA totally existed when the DS was designed... it's inexcusable that it doesn't, if you ask me. (But it'd be fairly easy to add the functionality if the DS had firmware upgrades. But DS is no PSP...)

@Vecha: Sorry to go off on a tangent for a second here, but "adapter"? Is there something bizarrely special about it that you felt required quotation marks?
In any case, the hardware comparisons are beside the point. The real point I was trying to make before you started sidetracking everything by focusing on a comment that was merely tangential to my original point is this:
1. The new DS (if it is in fact real) does not contain any significant hardware upgrades that would force all current DS owners to upgrade if they wanted to continue buying new DS games. The only exception to this rule would be any game that required either the camera or MP3 playback to play, and those functions would likely only find their way into a very small percentage of games since only a fraction of the userbase would have access to the functions.
2. The only people that would feel inclined to buy this new DS in the first place are people that either don't own a DS already or that would prefer to own a DS with the other media features built in. Once again, this is not a required upgrade. If it were, I'd imagine that Nintendo would have said something official about it by now given that the report states the new model is being released some time in the next three months or so.

I don't believe it. They can't make a bigger screen without sacrificing picture quality, which is why they've never gone small to big during the same generation; always big to small (GBA/SP to micro reduced the screen size while increasing the pixel density, so the picture was sharper than ever).
Wireless connection function power up sounds like you can turn it on wirelessly. Unless it's some function to be used by the Nintendo Channel for the Wii... that makes absolutely no sense.

360 with an HDMI port: however much the Elite costs? (I guess they all apparently have HDMI ports but my launch console doesn't so I'd have to buy a whole new console if I wanted it I guess.)
360 with wireless: an extra $100
If you buy an Arcade but then want all the features of an Elite? You're looking at an extra $300 to $400.
As for the PS3, well if you want PS2 backwards compatibility then you're going to have to buy a specific model. And Sony makes the PSP, which is on it's 2nd or 3rd model now each with different hardware functionality.

As long as they have an expansion slot for a non-proprietary memory card (SDHC or micro SDHC would do nicely) for the music playback. I'd hate to have to buy a 2GB Nintendo stick or card that doesn't work with anything else and is priced at £20/$35 whatever tickles your fancy.
Oh and also replace the 16bit headphone out socket with a better one, because it sounds crap for voices (and is the reason why the Play-Yan is still the best sounding music playback cartridge even though it was made for the GBA, because it has its own socket).

I personally call bogus, seems more of a rumour than a report.

Come to think of it, this should've been seen coming ever since Trace Memory / Another Code (early game for the ds); the ds-clone in the game mysteriously had a camera when the real one didn't.
I wonder if a built-in camera suggests the ds's resolution will be better to accomodate clearer photos...

What's with the world already? Every device does a couple of thigs, hoping to replace your other gadgets, but fails, because it just isn't as half good as your other gadgets. Even if mobile phones have music playback and cameras, and game consoles have music playback and cameras, I'm pretty damn sure we'll still need an iPod and a digital camera at the end of the day, as these gadgets don't do these functions well.
Just do away with these extra, useless, half-assed features already, and give us a cheaper gadget. A DS is built for gaming not for music. I'd buy an iPod if I need music.

@Thorax: I think his post was sarcasm, because I know I certainly lol'd.

hmm....I don't think its true, I just had a thought that if nintendo got rid of the GBA port on the DS (something I don't want them to do but work with me here) they'd have room for a camera and what not, perhaps having the camera in between the two screens, turning the GBA slot into a SD card reader for storing music and pictures.
I don't need it at all, I'm perfectly happy with the DS as it is and I'm sure a lot of people are too, but this is very intriguing. Are nintendo trying to compete with the PSP 'media machine' mantra, or do they just want another DS revision to rejuvinate sales (not that they need to)

@Lezard: The lite really does have a crisper brighter screen. This is what sealed it for me.

@-=}{oT~dEv1L 666=-: You said it. I want a phone that texts and talks. I want a videogame system that plays games. And I have my zune if i need music.
