Square Enix President Sorta Dates Dragon Quest IX (Mentions Tecmo)
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 7:30 PM on September 19, 2008
While DS title Dragon Quest IX will not be playable at TGS 08, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada (pictured) seems to be indicating that the game will be available next during the Japanese New Year. Here's a translation of the short soundbyte that popped up on Yahoo! News Japan:
The Latest Dragon Quest On Sale During New Year's Period = Tecmo Purchase "We Will Decide What To Do" — Square Enix President
On the 18th, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada responded in an interview that the latest entry in the popular game series Dragon Quest will go on sale during the New Year's period.
The Japanese New Year's period is January 1st to January 4th, but the original text doesn't get any more specific than "Early January" or "New Year's". Though, maybe he means around New Year's, who knows. And what's more, it's not explicitly clear that Wada is referring to DQIX, though Square Enix has stated several times that the still yet-to-be-dated game will be out this financial year — which ends in March. And what's this about Square Enix deciding what do to about the Tecmo buyout? Thought that Square Enix had rescinded its offer.

Yeah, i'd like to know in which decade they plan on releasing Dragon Quest IX in North America myself, but if they could release the DQ V and VI remakes next year to tide me over, then that would be nice.

Jesus Toast, how long does it take to produce a frigging DS game? They've had over a decade to wrap their heads around producing titles for hardware of that caliber. Hell, I'd probably think it was funny if I didn't want the game so damn much.

@TheIrishNinja: It is by choice!
Also, if you spend enough Christmases playing Dragon Quest, playing Dragon Quest (alone) comes to feel like something you must do on Christmas.
Like some of you people, with your Christmas trees and families.

@Skinney: Level-5 developed DQIX as well!
Which is why it would be hilarious to release it on the same day as White Knight Story.

There's still the Dragon Quest VI remake to be released.
It'd be hilarious, in a forehead-slapping way, if they announce in two weeks, Pre-Tokyo Game Show, that they'll be releasing the remake of Dragon Quest VI in January.
They previously said that they wouldn't release DQIX until they'd released the remakes of DQIV, DQV, and DQVI.
Then again, prior to saying that, they said that they were going to release DQIX at the end of 2007.
They also said DQIX was going to be an action game.
Then people freaked out, because Monster Hunter hadn't exactly exploded yet, and they changed the game to a traditional RPG, and announced three remakes.
So . . . hmm.
DQ games are traditionally released on Saturdays, thanks to that urban myth about people skipping school to buy DQIII when it was released on a Friday.
So releasing it during a holiday season -- especially when this installment is expected to outsell all the previous installments -- certainly follows logically.
Why release the game after New Year's, though? Why not release it just before?
If they release it the week of New Year's, that implies that they're playing up the multiplayer function, expecting kids and parents and extended family to enjoy questing during their new year's parties.
If they release it after the holidays are over, that's like they're playing up the singleplayer mode.
If I were them (glad I'm not!) I'd just slop it out on Christmas, alongside White Knight Story! That'd really be a crushing blow to Level-5 -- the typical Jotaro Sixpack is going to be like "Spend 5,000 yen, or 57,000 yen? Hmmm."
Then again, I will buy White Knight regardless, because, ahem, I am already planning to spend Christmas and new years alone -- and in the dark.
. . .
. . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . . . .

My text was garbled, perhaps because of the attack on sony.
So I will revise it.
Since I am a shameless fanboy, I must say that Dragon Quest 9, a true entry into the series of Dragon Quest, was developed and will ONLY be available on the best handheld of all time
The Nintendo DS.
Your only counter Sony is to remake FF7.
Shameless fanboy boasting off!*

Didn't Square announce that they were working on reducing the gap between Japanese, American and European releases? How far along are they in that sweet, sweet plan?
Hopefully, we won't have to wait a year or more to get DQIX over here in PAL-land.
@NintendoFanBoy64: No, yr txt ws grbld because your post was childish, not constructive in any way, and unrelated to the topic.
If you have a point to make, we'll gladly listen.
If you only want to wave your fist at a phantom enemy you've built up in your head, you will get disemvoweled. It's quite simple, really.

@Antiterra: When did the disemvoweling start? That's pretty hilarious.
I'm somewhat upset DQIX continues to be pushed further and further back (there's no release date, but time keeps moving) but at the same time I have tons to play, so...
@Fabrice: I think that covers it for recent new IP, since they have been quiet on the Sony front with new stuff and haven't put out any new IP besides TWEWY for Nintendo lately. There could be something I'm missing on the 360 side of things though.

I highly doubt that he actually means the New Year's period. Having been in Tokyo for New Years 2006/2007, I find it hard to believe that enough stores would be open to effectively sell the game (practically everything outside of convenience stores close in Japan for the holidays).
