Udon Street Fighter Comics Coming To DVD
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:30 AM on September 4, 2008
Those of you who missed Udon's excellent Street Fighter series in comic book form have another chance to catch the series next February as Eagle One Media and Capcom team up to present a DVD version of the comic in animated form. Street Fighter: Round One - FIGHT!, due out February 9th, just in time for the release of Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li on February 27 - not only reprints issues 0-6 of the Udon series, it animates the comic, adding movement, music, special-effects, and even voice overs to the comic book dialogue If you ask me it's a complete and utter bastardization of the comic book as an art form, but that's just the sort of thing you'd expect from a big old comic book geek like myself.

This book wasn't excellent at all, actually. The characters spoke in cliches, the plot was as pointless as you might think a Street Fighter plot could be. Nice art, though. The fight scenes weren't too bad, but there is a complete lack of suspense throughout the whole book.

This would be awesome for Sakura Legends, I would love to hear Dan, Sakura, and Karen.

What was your opinion on the MGS Digital Graphic Novel(s), then, Fahey? Bastardisation or neat interactive & innovative tweak to the medium? Personally haven't given it a go, so I'm without an opinion on this - just asking.

This is both cool and frightening! How exactly is this going to work? Is it animated like a normal cartoon would be or is it partially animated to, looking more like stills with limited animation? Any word on the actors involved or even the MSRP?

Judging from the link, I'd say it's the stop-motion variety...I'd love to be proven wrong though.
Yeah I'll be getting this if I can find it. Heck I bought the crappy SF comics from way back...

I doubt there'll be any "animation" beyond a few twitching still images, and perhaps some energy glowing. See: the menu screens of SF2 HD remix for details.
Also, dear UDON: please actually make a new ish of your comic once in awhile instead of endlessly re-selling your existing stuff.
In conclusion, I'll buy this.

LOL @ people not having heard of comics being animated.
There's something called Manga in Japan and they are animated into what's known as Anime.
The One Piece manga is turned into an anime, and each episode is faithful to every panel in the comics, because in some cases, they're just scanned in and colored and have movement added to the mouth areas and when they move fast, it's just usually a background animated to give the effect that there's a lot of movement.
The Naruto anime however is not always faithful to the manga, as the producers of the anime take creative liberties and animate their own made up storylines that they came up with, known as fillers, for when they catch up too fast with the weekly manga chapters. Chapters for certain manga come out every week, and the animators started the series not very long after the manga came out, and this led to them catching up to the events of the manga at a very fast rate, since each episode could contain like 2-3 chapters worth, so what they do is sometimes take a break from the real storyline and make up their own stories which are known as fillers. Naruto episodes 136 to episode 220 are known as fillers, and I think they'll being airing those in America on cartoon network.. I feel sorry for the people who are stuck watching those fillers for the next couple seasons until the real storyline gets back into gear.
So once again. This isn't the first comic/manga to be translated faithfully into an animation, it's done with manga being turned into anime all the time. American cartoon makers never took advantage of this which is why lots of superhero cartoons here sucked. It would be cool to see marvel have some dvd releases of some of their major comic events, faithfully adapted and containing every image from their books.

@boombye: I think it'll be more along the lines of the MGS digital comics. Completely different from turning manga into anime. And referring to what you're talking about, I'm pretty sure they use the manga more like detailed storyboards than actual production art for the animated version...
Also, I don't seem to see anyone saying that this is the first comic/manga to be translated into animation. Don't be so smug.

SPOILERS!
One of my favourite all time moments in comic history is when Sakura finally pulls off a hadouken to save Ryu from being shot by gun. Tha flashback sequence of them on the train that ends with her trying to do one that in the next panel is her actually pulling one off gives me shivers even to this day when I think about it. Her being amazed she actually did one and Ryu's smile afterward are also pretty awesome.
I'm totally buying this.
