Your PlayStation 2 Trash Becomes Furniture Treasure
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:00 AM on September 3, 2008
With over 140 million PlayStation 2s walking the earth, surely their must be one or two that have broken down. Maybe even three. Possibly even more than that, as there are apparently enough to establish a product made from recycled PS2s.
UK based Pli Design is taking advantage of all those unwanted consoles with its Reee chair, which features 100% recycled PlayStation 2 plastic. Sound familiar? It might, as we wrote about Pli's PlayStation product last year. Seems Pli is just getting around to "launching" it next week.
If you're worrying about compromising "environmental credentials", look no further than the Reee. You've never sat this green before.

@Monsignor: Actually, the Dollar closed at a recent high vs. the Euro. It's 1.45:1, so the price is closer to 160 than 200.

I'm not gonna buy it if it lacks backwards compatibility. You just lost a sale Sony.

If my math is correct (currency converting), it's a $200 chair. Not to bad, for a piece of history.

"surely their must be one or two that have broken down. Maybe even three"
I've had more PS2 consoles break than 360 consoles so far the tally is (5 PS2) (3 xbox 360).
Just sayin.

@White-Sharingan:
My tally is 2(360s) and 4 ps2s.
But you know what?
Doesn't really matter.
Because not everyone is going to have the same number(some may not even have had ANY break)
So I think we should stop the number games.
Some fanboys/trolls may have little bitty heart broken :(

@White-Sharingan: Maybe it's just me but you sure came off like a smartass right there.
Anyways I bought my first PS2 in 2001 and I bought my First 360 in 2005 so according to me I had a PS2 break once a year and a 360 break once a year.
And I wish someone would pull the "take care of your consoles better" card because I've never had a N64,PS1,Xbox,Gamecube,Gensis,NES,SNES,Gameboy ever break.

The PS3's casing appears to be made of some sort of polystyrene. Not ideal for making deck chairs... too rigid.

@Vecha:
Maybe you've got gremlins (of the WWII variety, not from the 80's movie) lurking in your entertainment cabinet...
I never had to replace my near-launch PS2. :)
Luckily, I was able to put it out to pasture when I got my 60-gig Triple with teh BC. :D

@Murderdolls: considering I didn't cuss at you; its better to leave the barbarian actions apart :\, seems somene cant control their tongue (fingers in this case)
@Vecha: Im just saying, why even throw that comment there considering 360's lifespan hasnt even reached half of the PS2's
yes yes I know the PS2 was the faulty system last gen
but sure lets end this arguement

These items are kind of rare, sometimes there's a wait because they need enough ps2 to make them...but they told me they have plenty of xbox360 tables available also...and it comes with 3 year extended warranty.

I just want to say my PS2 is 6 years old and going strong. I almost want the thing to break so I can have a reason to get a sexy slim version.

hmm, never had a ps2 break, my brother and i got one when it first came out, it's still fine. i bought a 2nd one when i moved to nashville and was living on my own. it was refurbished from gamestop. never had an issue with it.
i got a 360 back about 6-7 months ago from my friend. it's still working, but i've also never used it.
so, i guess i don't have much input on this discussion. why am i typing??

@karateka: I read somewhere back in 2006 that 80-something million of the 120 million PS2 consoles out there are dead.

@karateka:
Good attempt at a funny, but I'm scoring you a D- because you neglected that the the PS2 had failures, and as an older system you're bound to have lots of broken consoles(possibly worn out) and stuff that just comes with the console being old.
So yeah. D- for you. be gone!

Guys.
The point is.
Theres going to be a shitload of xbox360 chairs coming out in the next few years.
I, for one, have already contributed 3 chairs to the cause.
Just doing my part you know.

How nice. I heard there was a rare metal used in the PS2's mined from the bloody hands of children in Africa. Its good to know they have a place to sit now.

@King Seafoam: It was also pointed out elsewhere that PS2's were a really small percent of consumer electronics that also use that metal. I think DVD Players were one of them.

I can't wait till they start making houses out of 360's, there is going to be enough of them come November 2008 when peoples 3 year warranty starts running out.
