Activision Teams With IGA For PS3 In-Game Ads
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:40 AM on October 1, 2008
In-game advertising company IGA Worldwide continues its streak of signing major console manufacturers and publishers to their network, announcing that they've signed a multi-year agreement with Activision to supply dynamic advertisements for the company's PlayStation 3 titles, beginning with Guitar Hero: World Tour.
"Our partnership with IGA will allow us to deliver dynamic in-game advertising to the growing PlayStation Network community for the first time," said Dave Anderson, head of business development at Activision Publishing. "By incorporating dynamic in-game advertising in our titles where it is appropriate, we can increase the realism of our games by presenting consumers with authentic environments in genuine settings, while also expanding a key growth opportunity for the company."
See? It's all about realism. I hate it when video games make me thirsty for a beverage or excited about a masculine hygiene product that doesn't actually exist. Thank goodness for realistic advertising!
IGA Worldwide Signs Exclusive PlayStation 3 In-Game Advertising Deal With Activision Publishing
New York, N.Y. - September 30, 2008 - IGA Worldwide (IGA), the leading independent in-game advertising network, today announced a multi-year agreement with Activision Publishing, Inc. to deliver dynamic in-game advertising into multiple video game titles on Sony Computer Entertainment's PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3). The first game to feature IGA integrated ads will be Guitar Hero® World Tour, the next installment in the best-selling franchise. To date, the Guitar Hero franchise has sold in excess of 22 million units worldwide, according to The NPD Group, Charttrack and GfK.
This landmark agreement, which also includes future Activision Publishing titles, is the second publisher deal announced by IGA since the PS3 opened its platform for in-game advertisements.
"Activision has one of the most impressive stables of games in the video game industry," said Justin Townsend, CEO of IGA Worldwide. "To partner with them demonstrates the appeal of in-game advertising to marketers and consumers, alike. We will be able to connect more brands with engaged users than ever before."
IGA and Activision Publishing will work in tandem to integrate the advertisements into the titles in a contextually relevant way. All dynamic ads can be updated in real time, allowing for campaigns to change creative without a major reprogramming effort. Ads can be targeted to a number of different demographics and offer marketers a wide variety of measurement metrics.
Buoyed by a recent Nielsen Games study highlighting the effectiveness of the medium, advertisers continue to expand into the in-game industry. The Nielsen data revealed that over 80 percent of consumers feel games were just as enjoyable with ads as without. Consumers' positive brand attribute association increased 33 percent when viewing in-game advertisements.

What happened to the time when videogames just used to be videogames without ads, "required" expensive DLC, excuses for a $10 price increase, and other hidden costs?
Shareholder greed is ruining the videogame industry little by little. Anything to make oodles of extra cash, at the expense of dumbing down the games we love. What a shame...

Everybody stop buying video games! Tell your friends, too. That'll show these money-grubbers. The video game industry isn't about making money, it's about catering to the customer, which is us. And it's much better for us to boycott games altogether instead of just accept that we'll be seeing a few Apple logos sometimes.

When a publisher reaches the top spot they seem to do everything in their power to hasten their eventual downfall.
I hate advertising and marketing so much. I don't even have to go into detail how retarded it is. What the hell happened to the product being good enough that it becomes all the advertising you need? People shouldn't be buying crap they don't need in times like this.

i have no problems if in-game ads are placed normally in the videogame world (meaning on billboards in towns, or on walls of racetracks, character clothing, etc.)
BUT...BUT, if they become independent, stand-alone entities that pop-out, as someone was saying above, during load times, or pop-ups on cutscenes....i think i would go crazy.

Lol...Wtf is wrong with Activision, or did Kotaku start anti-PR campaign on it, bathing it post after post in a negative light? Oh well, it deserves it like Vivendi, which they merged with. Seriously, this company may main franchies even worse than EA.
If you wonder what may happen to Blizzard because of these two, look at the history of another creative company crushed by these money hungry bastards along with Sierra - [en.wikipedia.org] , the creators of legendary Death Track, Incredible Machine and a large number of other great games.

Activision disgusts me, they are so money crazed right now they'll do anything. They don't even care about the substance of their games anymore. Just making bucket loads of cash at the expense of the gamer.
Their business decisions for the past year or so have all been sacrificing game value for more money. Like trying to lock people in to guitar hero with their instruments. Supporting them in this is allowing them to start a movement that will forever change the game industry.

@BriGuy: You're thinking too hard if a Pepsi vending machine in the background of some modern day game is going to ruin your experience. I'd have to agree with you if Ico gets health points from a PowerBar, but ads are usually background material (no, not always) or in sports games and music games where story and atmosphere isn't really part of the immersion factor.

I love that people are getting so enraged over this because you already paid for the game. I paid for a movie ticket, yet they show plenty of commercials before the movie starts. Many of you are paying for Xbox Live and they have advertisements on there too.
Don't think for one moment that paying for a service of any kind somehow makes you special and alienates you from advertising. If there's a large enough install base for it, you will see advertisements there. Simple as that.

As long as it's not obnoxious/in your face ads I don't have a problem. Also it has to depend on the game. I don't care if there's an advertisement in GH, Tony Hawk, or any sports game as that wouldn't bother me or take away from the game. It would ruin the immersive feel if it was placed in an RPG or something.

I'm really worried what will become of Blizzard in the future. Big corporations with dollar signs in their eyes really seem to want to make tons of cash in the easiest way possible...in game ads are easy, releasing incomplete games that put pressure on the consumer to buy expensive DLC is easy, charging an extra $10 and saying its because of higher development costs when others are saying at the same time the games are where the huge profits are at...
I just think of Rare and what happened to them. Same with Lucasarts...both those companies used to be gold. This may be the last great generation before gaming becomes a novelty and not a hobby.

@LittleBigPlaneteer: you do realize the difference between IN GAME AD, and DASHBOARD ADS. there's a difference between and in game ads. dashboard ads are for shows and games that are currently available on LIVE, most of these ads are new releases that just came. sure they dont lower prices or anything but you do get an occational free theme or pics or video. Also when you start your game you don't see it again till you go back to the dashboard.
However in game ads are those that appear in like every EA game that show "the next tiger woods game coming soon" every 2 or 3 ads in Burnout. i mean that kind of pisses me off having to see that when im trying to do a take down here.
also i think what also pisses people off is the fact that they are trying to play it off as "realism". when in reality they dont care they just want to make some extra cash. look at GTA those games are semi-realistic, the city feel and looks nice and "alive" somewhat. did they need IGA for that, kind of, realism?
