Capcom Ups Resident Evil 5 Sales Targets
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on October 1, 2008
When it was still supposed to be shipping in 2008, Capcom forecast that Resident Evil 5 would ship 2.3 million copies in the year. Now that it's been pushed back to 2009, though, things are looking up! Producer Jun Takeichi has said that while he hopes the game sells 2 million at the "low end of the scale", he's really hoping the game does closer to 3 million, because "users in Europe and America will be particularly pleased with the game's content". Jun, users everywhere are pleased by zombie dirt bikes.

@BritBloke916: Well, fix that when you can! Either way; 5 looks like a well primed updated resi 4 anyway!

The delay allowed them to add puzzle block dropping cart racing, with stealth elements. I'll buy it.

@BritBloke916: You never played Resi 4? Find some way to rectify this... it is one of the finest, slickest, most exciting games ever made!

I wish for nothign but the best for Capcom's Resident Evil series. Just remember we Wii (pun not intended) owners also liek to get our zombie fix. "Dead Rising" better not be the last game using the RE4 engine.

Why are we just now going nuts for the dirt bike thing?
That was in the trailer released a long time ago.

@EvilFiek: Agreed, I think they're lowballing themselves. It's RE5.

@EvilFiek: 2-3 million, of course.

Considering that the game is multiplattform etc. I would expect it to sell at least 4-5 million in 2009. 2-3 sounds a bit low in my opinion considering the hype and the sales of RE4.

Well, I never played Resi 4, so I might well pick this up for PS3. Gotta love zombies.

@jackd4y: At the very starting of Resident Evil 4, an overvoice of Leon says:
"It was right before I was to take on my duties of protecting
the president's daughter when she was abducted. That's the ultimate reason I'm in this lonely, rural part of Europe. According to our intelligence, there's reliable information of a sighting of a girl that looks very similar to the
president's daughter. Apparently she's being witheld by some unidentified group of people. Who would have thought my first job would be a rescue mission?"
It's told pretty blatantly, actually.

They are really lowballing themselves; it's on the PS3 and 360 and it's coming out after the holiday season (first big release for 2009), and lastly, IT'S THE SEQUEL TO RE4 AND LOOKS AMAZING!

@jocaju: Resi 5 > Killzone 2. One has to factor in the stronger previews so far and the fact it's multiformat. I'm not stoked about Killzone 2. Resi 5 has me drooling every time I see a video.

@syl1985: The first big realese of 2009 is Killzone 2. Also, I think 2-3 million is a good number, remember RE4 in 4 platform(GC, PS2, PC and Wii) sold a little over 4 million.

@CitizenInsane27: I don't know, RE4 sold a little be more than 4 million to date and that including GC, PS2, PC and Wii. Even RE2 outsold RE4.

@jocaju: Well it sold more than 2 million on PS2 alone, the Wii Verion itself(and that was just a port) sold over a million. I think that sales of 2 million on each plattform are realistic. (Also don't forget, Dead Rising, for example, sold over a million on 360 and that was a completely new IP with a similiar subject matter).

@dowingba: It is also explained that the Spaniards unearthed a parasitic organism whilst mining...possibly for Spinels...explaining why the Spanish villagers were "acting up". Seems to me that @jackd4y: doesn't read the files that they pick up in game! :)

@dowingba: I didn't say it wasn't. Trying to say Killzone 2 isn't a big release is like trying to say FFXIII won't be a big release: it's not true. But neither is it a concrete state: something does not become a 'big release' and remain on the same level as everything else which has attained the status of 'big release'. Some releases are simply bigger than others. And for the reasons given - namely the multiformat release and the stronger preview focus - I'd put money on Resi 5 being a more noteworthy and notable release than Killzone 2.

Missing Christmas is horrible for any game, that's true. However, Christmas is usually a crowded affair, even for a big name like Resident Evil. Why compete with Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Fable II, Fallout 3, Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, Left 4 Dead, SOCOM: Confrontaton, LittleBigPlanet, or Rock Band 2/GH: World Tour when you can have March all to yourself?
Smash was delayed until March, and it friggin' dominated, at least until the GTAIV juggernaut awoke in April. But yeah, outside of Street Fighter IV, there's no real competition for a triple AAA title like RE5 to worry about in March. Huge sales are guaranteed.
