EA Axes Tiberium For Not Meeting Standards
Posted by Brian Crecente at 4:31 AM on October 1, 2008
Following word in July that EA's Command & Conquer-based squad shooter, Tiberium was getting shifted back to 2010, comes word that the game has been officially killed and some staff let go, the publisher confirmed with Kotaku today.
Kotaku obtained a copy of the internal memo sent to staff earlier today outlining the reasons why the game was axed. In the memo Mike Verdu, of EA LA, says that the game would not be able to get up to snuff given the amount of time and resources left in the production cycle.
The memo goes on to state that several people on the team had to be released.
" We will make every effort to place affected individuals on projects within the studio - and where that isn't possible, to connect them with opportunities in other teams at EA."
More interesting is the fact that Verdu calls for this decision to serve as a warning for future projects.
"The quality bar has been raised. Now we need to step up our focus on great design and execution, catching any problems early and correcting them quickly."
While Electronic Arts declined to comment on the memo, they did verify that the game has been killed.
"EA has suspended work on Tiberium effective immediately," said Mariam Sughayer, EA spokesperson. "The game was not on track to meet the high quality standards set by the team and by the EA Games Label. A lower quality game is not in the best interest of the consumers and would not succeed in this market.
"This decision will result in some individuals being released. However, EA will make every effort to place talented people on other projects. Eligible employees will receive severance and outplacement support."
Sughayer added that EA LA is home to several units of the company including EA Mobile, EA Casual Entertainment Headquarters, EA's Global Online group and others. At the EA Games Label studio in that facility, developers there are creating Command & Conquer Red Alert 3, a series of titles in development with Steven Spielberg, and other games which have not yet been announced.
And for those interested, here's the full memo:
It is with a heavy heart that I announce an end to all work on Tiberium effective immediately. I've consulted with Nick Earl and Frank Gibeau at the EA Games Label and together we have reached the conclusion that given the time and resources remaining, we will not be able to deliver this product to an appropriate level of quality.
The game had fundamental design challenges from the start. We fought to correct the issues, but we were not successful; the game just isn't coming together well enough to meet our own quality expectations as well as those of our consumers.
Unfortunately, this action will result in several individuals on the team being released. We will make every effort to place affected individuals on projects within the studio - and where that isn't possible, to connect them with opportunities in other teams at EA.
This is the right move for the studio and the company, but it's particularly hard for me because of the impact it will have on our people. Many individuals contributed their time and talents to this game. I spent time in the trenches with them and I was continually impressed by their work.
Moving forward, we need to make sure this doesn't happen again. I believe we are already doing a better job of engineering success in from the start. The quality bar has been raised. Now we need to step up our focus on great design and execution, catching any problems early and correcting them quickly.
We will strive to live up to our values: To make great games, treat people right, keep our commitments, and grow our business.

Well for those who wanted another Red Alert in the First Person (because yes, I did actually enjoy Renegade, thank you very much!) there's a free FPS with all the Red Alert vehicles and everything out there.
I actually just downloaded it a couple of days ago, and it's rated very highly on the Mod Database. The link: [www.moddb.com]
Pity about that studio, the pre-rendered (or was that the game engine?) trailer for Tiberium Wars was pretty neat, I thought.

Wow, this is the third game to have a Game Informer cover story in recent memory that's gotten smashed by the publisher. Brutal Legend, Ghostbusters, and now Tiberium.
Then again, one less shooter in the world can't be a bad thing.

Interesting. GI gave this game a cover not that long ago if I recall. It's weird to see game go from the cover of the most widely circulated game magazine all the way to the gutter in so short a period of time.

I'm not really too shocked by this-- EA actually seem to be tightening their pockets when it comes to releasing junk. Well, other than Madden, but whatever. Their upcoming slate looks pretty promising, and Tiberium was definitely a black sheep in the stable. I've got no problem at all with using the development money this game would've continued to consume on other, better projects.

Basically: it was another generic shooting game.
Shame though. I think games based off of RTS's that try and take the series to a new genre are interesting (always wanted to play StarCraft: Ghost).
Hopefully this is showing people they aren't the same EA anymore though (well, further showing them, they haven't been the same EA for a while now, but people refuse to acknowledge it).

I liked the sound of another First Person CnC game.
Anyone who played Renegade online would of enjoyed it a bit.
Although it was funny to see GT TV get exclusive gameplay previews and interviews of this game only for it to be canceled.
I still don't understand how they can release games like Army of Two and not this. Also the fact that they charge for the same game every year and release "250 ADDITIONS!" Some of which can be a new line of code -.- Is pretty disgraceful.
Simply update the player stats etc charge 5 quid for it and just work on a BRAND new game every 2 or 3 years.
I don't understand why waiting for games to be amazing is a bad thing.
Activision are picking up these habits using it on they're Call of Duty and Guitar Hero series although its a shame to see Call of Duty going where its going.
I just hope to see more new IP's and companys actually spending time on games rather than throwing new stuff out the door all the time. Even though its the same thing as before.
EA are getting better but.. they need to sort out some stuff first.

@MasterYong: I'm really getting tired of this anti-EA mentality. While it's true EA for a long while now hasent been the Valve or BioWare of the industry.. it really did change these past one-two years or so. I'm not saying to take my word for it, but atleast stop fallowing the herd and judge stuff on your own.
As for Tiberium getting axed, the lack of hype was giving way to this for a while now. Even the material they released back then wasent great. So yes.. i whould prefer a good game, then a bad game, even if it's a C&C themed one.

That's a shame. Renegade was a fun game, at least in singleplayer, and I figured they could just use a similar approach with Tiberium.
In all honesty, while I enjoyed Renegade, it had nothing to do with its "quality," which could be hit-or-miss. It was the immersion in the C&C universe. For the first time you weren't some commander in a zoomed out view. You were there, in the field.

EA did do a good job, story wise, with C&C3, though balancing issues could be better. Tiberium was always going to have the ancestor of Renegade over it, it was going to be hard to break the mould. I was thinking, Squad Based Shooter, Tiberium, just put EA LA together with DICE (BF Series) and let them work it out. That way, it could be Battlefield Tiberium, EA gets their Tiberium done, and DICE get a new BF title. Win win.

While it looked like a good game, I'm glad it got the axe. SPOILERS AHEAD: The way C&C3 ended was perfect, and I really didn't like the idea of continuing the story after that. The Scrin invasion was pretty devastating, even though it was just a scouting party. Hearing a full-scale attack being called on Earth was awesome, because it really felt like humanity was truly fucked. They didn't cheap out with a feelgood ending, and they didn't ruin it with some crass shot of Earth exploding. Hearing about Tiberium made me think that humanity would survive, and beat the Scrin. That made me sad :(

If this game was cancelled for being 'below par', than it must have been programmed on an Atari 2600. No-one at EA would turn down the chance to pick through a dying man's pockets.

How can so many of you guys (Commenters) have your head so far up your asses?
"I guess EA really is a changed company.."
WHAT?! Have you seen the shit games they've been pumping out. Army of Two was one of the worst games I've ever played. It had the gimmickiest play style, most see-through storyline, and was just under par all over the place.
And that's just a new IP, what about the REVOLUTIONARY IP that they ruined with the abortion in dvd format that was Mercenaries 2?
EA hasn't changed, just their PR companies are smarter than you guys now.

@Gil-Galad: Everyone can have their own opinion but both of those games are between 70 and 75 metacritic, which can be translated as "mediocre". Of course you're probably more qualified than every game critic out there to call them "one of the worst games you've ever played".
If you're not a hateboy it should be easy to see most of the recent stuff they put out there is above average. And future lineup is promising too.

@Cosmitzian: I agree here, I may never play another Madden (just not for me) but it seems like they are really trying with there new games like Dead Space and Mirrors Edge.
And who knows, maybe they will suck, and we'll all laugh and some, like me, will feel stupid for thinking they actually want to make good games, but, really, you gotta respect them for at least trying now, and I, for one, have very high hopes for both those games.

EA is like the mob.
Once your "protection" is gone, it's just a matter of time before you get whacked.
With the amount of corporate jockeying and selling out that goes on around there I am surprised this has not happened to more games.
I promise you, the higher ups I know there are absolutely concerned with their well being and their position at the company 1st and formost. They are all gunning for promotions, and everyone is a designer.
It's total rubbish and they won't release ANY good games out of LA until they get a good design staff, not some movie schmuck.

Hmmm...I know Tiberium got axed, but Red Alert 3 Premier Edition is supposed to be shipping with beta information for a "future C&C title". I figured Tiberium, but if that got cancelled, I wonder if there's a proper follow up to C&C 3 in the works? The Scrin campaign left a huge cliffhanger that Tiberium was supposed to fill.
I'm not too sad. I thought Tiberium looked like crap. Maybe we'll just get C&C4 instead.

@hammerhand: No probably not comment of the week. Unless comment of the week is to be given to the most obvious, lame, out of date post available.
The ragging on EA party is over now, the guy hosting it has gone to bed with some chick that came to score some booze, even the ugly girls have paired up and buggered off leaving you and a couple of other sad-sacks to finish your warm, flat, stale beer and piss off back to your mum's basement.
Why don't you and @tobias_funke: and everyone else who "hurr hurr"s at anything that big publishers do to try and satisfy your constant whining about low quality games find something new and interesting to say about this sort of topic...something like...
"Kudos to EA for scrapping a project that wasn't up to snuff rather than pressing it, boxing it, shipping it and selling it in the broken shoddy state that they established a reputation for in the early part of this decade. It looks like EA is finally taking notice of what it's consumers have to say and have turned a corner. I hope their upcoming titles Dead Space and Mirror's Edge are able to match the hype they have generated."
