Rock Band's AC/DC Live Track Pack - The Details
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:20 AM on October 1, 2008
So Harmonix and MTV Games told the New York Times all about the upcoming AC/DC Live Rock Band track pack, but they omitted some important details, which the official press release is all-too happy to fill us in on. Details such as the release date, November 2nd for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 2 in the States, November 16th for the Wii, running $39,98 for current gen and $29.98 for the good old PS2. Europe and the UK should be getting the pack sometime in early December. Note that the press release does not mention Wal-Mart exclusivity for the game, only the band's new album, Black Ice. Might just be an oversight, but there you go.
As for playing the songs from the standalone pack in Rock Band 1 and 2, 360 and PS3 owners will be able to enter a special export authentication code, copying the songs to the hard disk for play in either title. Me? Not spending $40 for 18 new tracks, though if they ever decide to put the album up as DLC later on down the line, sign me up. Hit the jump for the full skinny.
AC/DC COMES EXCLUSIVELY TO ROCK BAND™ TO BRING AC/DC LIVE: ROCK BAND® TRACK PACK™ TO FANS WORLDWIDE
Set List from Legendary Live AC/DC Performances Come to Life in Rock Band for Global Release Beginning November
New York, NY, September 30, 2008 - AC/DC comes exclusively to Rock Band beginning this November for the worldwide release of AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band® Track Pack™ by Harmonix, the leading developer of music-based games, and MTV Games, a part of Viacom's MTV Networks, (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B). So they want me to spend forty bucks for eighteen songs, and then spend a few more dollars to export those songs to Rock Band 2 so I won't have to swap discs every time I want to play Thunderstruck? Fuck that. I'll wait for the bargain bin, or DLC version, but I'm not counting on the latter as AC/DC has already expressed their dislike for à la carte downloads of their music.

@PollockRoc:
Well just looking at the way they handled RB1's exporting seems to leave the window open for renting and ripping. RB exporting doesnt require you own the disc per se. You just need it long enough to download the code and then rip the tracks. I'd be a little surprised if they didnt do the same thing. They already set precedent with the first game on the platform.

@Modus_Operandi: The only people it's going to cause a problem for are the people trying not to give their money to EA/HMX/MTV. And that causes problems for the folks at those respective companies.
That said, you're right, we don't know how the code is going to work. It's all speculation at this point. But my money is on the company execs trying to take my money.

Ouch. $40? That's just too high for 18 AC/DC songs, especially for live performances. The only band that I'd even consider at that price is Led Zeppelin. If charging that much is the only way to get AC/DC on board then I don't have high hopes for other high profile artists holding out. What a shame. I really want to play and sing Back in Black.

There's still ways by it. Really dpends on how the code works. If its something like the 20 bonus song code that they have it might be tougher. But do you really think the export is a one time only thing? That could cause problems for people down the line.
Also if you happen to be the first person to rent from Blockbuster then you might not have to worry.

Let's see, Blood Sugar Sex Magik (released today, woo!) is a 20 dollar download, at 16 tracks (the 17th being "Give It Away," which is on the disk). So, basically, with this you pay 20 bucks more for two additional tracks. Time wise, you get something like 20 minutes more of playtime for those 20 extra bucks with AC/DC.
No thanks.

Wow, $40 for an add-on pack is a little steep. I know people go on about all these reasons why they cost so much, but apart from new art assests and someone syncing up the new tracks, which they'll have an editor for, why should it cost so much? It's basically the same as DLC put on a disc, so why charge so much? Actually, I know the answer, because people will pay it. And that's the sad thing, most people will bitch about the price, state that they refuse to pay it, then go buy like good little sheep. Sad. I'll skip it until I can get it cheaper somewhere.

If the game were the original $29.88 price annouced on Wal-Mart's page I'd have been all over this.
$40 however is way too much for 18 tracks. (The first track pack was 20 songs for only $30 by comparison)
I DO like the export option, and see that they've found a way to overcome the "buy one copy and pass it around town" method that effects RB1. The access code will likely be one time only, so you won't be able to buy the game used (or rent it after somebody else at blockbuster) and cash in the code for yourself.
I'm crossing my fingers that this will come to DLC. There are songs on there that'd I would LOVE to play, but not for $40...
This is a step in a most unfortunate direction.

It wasn't really a question, more of a sarcastic attack. I didn't expect I'd have to answer. We've already got Rush and The Who in Rock Band, who I feel are far better simply because their songs don't all sound the same. That's my biggest beef with AC/DC. All you really need are three or four songs and you've pretty much heard everything from their 22 albums, which I feel is not the mark of a great band. I realize AC/DC fans like them because they're guaranteed to never be hit by a ballad but diversify the sound a little bit.

@LoopyChew: The thing is, the export option is a very nice feature, but then again if we are gonna start looking for pros and cons, this game is 30-40 for 18 songs and the guitar hero ones are 50-60 for 40+ songs, which is more bearable for the amount of songs/dollar you are paying. The export feature is a really nice feature though.
And yes, people are displeased by this, but then again is not the same level of reaction that we've been reading for months with anything GH related. Ever some exclusive deal -wich sucks- goes to activision people go on and on how activision is ruining everything and how harmonix being the good developers would never do that. The same went with product placement -GH will have it on the form of instrument accesories and sponsorships and RB have it on ingame full instruments-.
At the end of the day Neversoft and Harmonix are both just companies. Anyone can like either one of their products or not, but we've been for quite some time now been reading how one is complete evil and one is the good one, when they both actually are just economical entities, just there to make money using assets that they know people will pay money for.
(BTW sorry for the rant, i am not atacking you, i just got carried away trying to make some point :P)

@DesmondHume: In this case however you have to buy what should really be dlc on a disc above what the DLC rate is. 18 songs x $2 = $36 and a discount if you buy in bulk. We shouldn't have to buy a disc from an "exclusive" retailer in the first place.

i knew it was something.... gamestop lists this game as Rock Band Track Pack Vol 2 for the 360 on their release pages.
i was wondering why there was no volume 1 for the 360 xD i guess it's the AC/DC pack. it's listed at 29.99 on the page though. but it may change. :(
why not just offer it as dlc? i don't need a physical disc that i'll only use for the 5-10 min it's in my 360 while i'm exporting the songs. i don't need the disc after that. the dlc formula is perfect, harmonix! why change?
hmm...w/e. i'll see what happens when it comes out.

Meh, if it was a band other then AC/DC, I'd think about it. To me, their singer ruins every song they ever make. Also, $40 for 18? That's over $2 a song. How much you wanna bet ACDC's people bumped the price on the pack up?

This doesn't surprise me. Tickets to AC/DC's show in Atlanta are $90 each FLAT.... and there are no tickets being mailed-out, you need to pick them up at the boxoffice with your credit card/ID used to purchase. So there goes the resale market. You either buy at $90 before the show sells out or you don't get to go. Period.

Because it's AC/DC. The greatest rock band ever behind Led Zeppelin. If you're a fan, the price is meaningless.

I think this occurred because AC/DC isn't particularly thrilled with digital distribution. If they were, HMX would have definitely made this a song pack for Rock Band Music Store. AC/DC doesn't have anything on iTunes because of it. They are simply paranoid of the thought of digital distribution.

Man....i love AC/DC, but the price point is too steep. Why don't they stick to the DLC model they have perfected? Why should we pay 2.20 per song when it has been cheaper for the DLC online? Lame....I do not need another disk and box for 18 songs....Bleh....

@ScreamingBroccoli: There's one MAJOR difference.
With Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, that setlist was trapped on the disc. With AC/DC, I can perform the export and have all of the new songs readily available in my other Rock Band games. At which time I can sell off the AC/DC disc.
I'm also wondering if the 360 and PS3 versions will support the existing RB DLC aa well. That would be another plus when comparred to GH:A.
I STILL don't like the idea of a disc based song. And while I'd consider doing this for $30 ($40 is way too much), I'd be hesitant to add the ENTIRE setlist to my game. But if these game to DLC, I'd probably buy 4-5 from that list.
So while it's still a step in the wrong direction, HMX is providing means of mitigating the damage.

@casbar: No, re-read the press release:
"All tracks from the AC/DC LIVE: Rock Band Track Pack will also be available for play in Rock Band and Rock Band 2[1][1] by entering a special export authentication code for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system versions."
The export code is included with the disc. It'll be like RB2's code for the 20 free DLC songs that are coming, a one-time use code to "buy" the license for free from your console's marketplace functionality.
There may be a way to actually purchase a license for exporting the songs, but that would be there to cover, say, someone who buys the game used after the original owner used the code that came with the game. I don't have any info that this will be available, I'm just speculating.

Drop the $40, transfer to your hard drive, then sell the (stand alone) disk on Craigslist or a buddy that doesn't have rock band, but has a guitar from guitar hero. It should be easy to sell for $20 or so (they just won't be able to transfer it to their hard drive).

@ViewtifulJason: This. I'm guessing that the overall cost and packaging method is related to how much AC/DC demanded to license the songs, and other possible demands. (the oft-quoted "AC/DC doesn't license singles")
Certainly not defending Harmonix here, but as long as they don't plan on actually making this a habit, the only thing you're losing is AC/DC. And if that is a function of jackassery on behalf of Angus and company, then that may end up being hung on them.

@phunky420: I can't prove it, but I'd say the reason why isn't Harmonix, it's AC/DC.
Faced with a choice of no further material from AC/DC, and this, they chose this. They'd probably prefer the DLC model, since anyone who'd buy this would also buy the DLC model, where Harmonix doesn't have to deal with the expenses of creating physical copies, cutting in Microsoft on the license export stuff, cutting in Walmart, etc. Plus, with the DLC model, you'd pick up extra sales for people who just wanted a song or two, etc.
AC/DC, on the other hand, doesn't like distributing their music as anything other than the whole of where it came from. Quoting a Telegraph article:
That's part of why I figure that this is the live album, is that it's a full album, which satisfies the band, even though it basically acts as a greatest hits album, which the band opposes. It appeases them by not allowing people to just buy individual songs. The WalMart element is there to tie in to AC/DC's existing deal.
These are probably sub-optimal, but if you didn't go along with this, there'd likely be no AC/DC available, period.

Yeah, I'm a total fanboy and I don't care... clearly, there are legions of people behind me. My birthday is three days after this drops. $40 for 18 tracks seems ridiculously disproportionate compared to Rock Band 2, which has 84 on disc with the promise of 20 more downloadable, and even way too high compared to DLC, which, even with no album/group discount, at $2/song, would only be $36. And I'm only really interested in 6 or so songs anyways.

The price looks bad in retail and album comparisons. Specially if you ignore the stand alone package benifits and treat this as just a list of new tracks. It looks like this will be a decent stand alone experince with its own achievements, and assets. The press release does mention playing with the band. The exporting of songs to the main platform makes it an easier deal to swallow over GH:A. It's a bit expensive, but it will eventually drop in price. DLC doesn't usually.

Is the swearing left in? Maybe that's a reason for the retail disc because with that they can justify adult lyrical content? @Falsoman: I wholly agree about exclusivity sucking. I don't like it on either franchise.
GH:A does have a better dollar-per-song value proposition as compared to RB:ACDC, and this is pretty much the first time this has happened in the GH3/RB era (that the GH software beats RB in the song-per-money area). However--and I can see this being construed as fanboy justification, and I freely admit my biases towards RB in general--you can also look at it this way: If you only want a few songs from RB:ACDC, you spend less money than you do if you only care for a few songs from GH:A. (I also believe that if you like tracks from a given album, you're more likely to enjoy the rest of that album than if you were to get songs from all over the place, like GH:A does, so the odds that you'll at least tolerate the rest of the disc goes up a bit.) Not to mention, with the platform feature, you can at least move those few songs you like over to one of the other RB games and not have to worry about putting in the disc ever again.
(Unless you want to re-export the songs, which APPARENTLY ISN'T ALLOWED. Serious whiskey-tango-foxtrot there. Personally, I would've suggested putting the whole thing up as DLC for the offered price, and set individual tracks to the unprecedented-but-mentioned-as-possible 240 MSP/$2.99 if AC/DC is that worried about licensing and prices.)
One last thing: Neversoft shouldn't be blamed for the exclusivity, even though Brian Bright is the one harping on it--I'm pretty sure it's Activision that bagged the exclusivity, just as MTV, not HMX, got the exclusivity rights for HMX. Activision sucks. MTV sucks. This is not news by any means.
