'Shellshock 2: Blood Trails' Brings More Vietnam Survival Horror, Lynyrd Skynyrd
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:00 AM on October 1, 2008
Yes, we too had forgotten all about ShellShock: Nam '67, Eidos' hyper-violent Vietnam War first person shooter. The publisher reminds us today of its existence with the debut trailer for the sequel, which gamers everywhere are calling Shellshock 2: Blood Trails, because that's its name. Given the below-average marks the first Shellshock received, we're not overly enthusiastic about its chances this holiday season, but at least they scored the rights to "Freebird."

In no way did that look like a Vietnam game.....
But I have always wondered why they NEVER make Vietnam games? I loved Battlefield Vietnam so much!
Maybe they dont make Vietnam games because it would just be a game you couldnt win?

How did Freebird become the official "you're about to die" music? King of the Hill, The Devil's Rejects, and now this...

Somebody needs to make a realistic Vietnam game, that actually plays well. Even tho Battlefield: Vietnam didn't have much of a single player campaign, it really nailed down the look of the Vietnam war. Lush jungle environments is where it's at I say! It would be great to see Infinity Ward to take up the task of a Vietnam game, I think that they could do a great job with it.
Oh, and ShellShock: Nam '67, what a waste of cash that game was, even tho I picked it up used for $10. Craptastic.

I'm actually excited for this- if you read up this synopsis, it sounds like you are fighting off a crazed crew of a crashed plane- sounds pretty cool- and different...
SIDE NOTE: A new trend seems to be happening with game trailers and the whole "grindhouse" theme- I like it- Dead Space did the same thing

Looked pretty interesting. Looks like they're trying to bring the horror side of war into the game, and not just the action, which really, most games should have been doing by now, letting the gamer feel how the soldiers feel. (and yes, some have done this like Brothers in Arms, but not enough have, and this game is definitely taking it to the next level with the horror)
Here's to hoping the overall game doesn't turn out to be mediocre though.

Shellshock 1 was tolerable because for once it wasnt a crappy FPS(it was still rather crap though)but 3PS.
Oh well there they go too,why not work with Uwe Boll and smash it together with tunnel rats in a craptastic bundle?

But aren't Guerilla busy making another sure-to-be-no-better-than-average "Killzone" game? How do they have time to make another sure-to-be-no-better-than-average "Shellshock" game?
Oh, snap.
(As it turns out, they're not making it. I still don't care- "Killzone" was a waste of my time.)

@Xuchilbara:
Two reasons:
First, Vietnam is NOT a war that people like to look back upon, especially we Americans. And when you look at it it's not hard to understand why that is. Even the most ultra-right pro-war yokel recognizes that our flagrant dismissal of American and international rules of law and warfare lead to a flat-out failure that allowed Communism to rapidly spread through South-East Asia and resulted needlessly in millions of innocent deaths, not to mention the pointless waste of hundreds of thousands of American lives.
The other reason is that ignoring these very real elements in the story ends up grossly distorting the very real courage and patriotism of millions of American and Vietnamese citizens who were forced into service in this war against their will.

PS2 animations, quick cuts, melodramatic voice over, horrible music pauses, and that awesome skipping scene where the zombie guy keeps coming at the character with a machete....

The Vietnam war was an ugly, disturbing, traumatic experience for soldiers that still have a hard time coping some 40 years later. Even those called heroes don't think of what they went through like that.
Now how do you capture that in a game (particularly a genre that loves the thrill of battles and not the horror)? By making a game so ugly, disturbing and traumatic that it messes gamers up for life?
Well that won't work, now will it. These are 'just' games, right? So they can never effect us that way, even though movies can and do (Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket STILL mess with me some).
Many gamers and even devs like to have it both ways. That's why a Vietnam War game hasn't and won't work.

a vietnam war themed game might work. take the gameplay concepts from cod world at war, then add rape and civilian executions and you've got a game that's pretty spot on.

@DARTH_TIGRIS: What's your point? You think any war is fun for the people who were in it? You think Vietnam was more horrific than WW2? Do you know anything about the Eastern Front? Russian tanks driving over fleeing refugees...German's dropping grenades into the pockets of tied up POWs...artillery barrages lasting days... You think those soldiers didn't come through that just as traumatised as any Vietnam vet?
I know why you say a Vietnam game won't work when you don't seem to have a problem with other war games. It's because America lost isn't it? You're fine with the wars that America won I bet! No problems playing CoD or BiA because you get to be a hero?
(....waits for the "America didn't lose, it was public opinion back home that prevented us from striking the decisive blow" etc etc...)

@dsmx: Jack's had a rough week or so - no need to pile on. But it is a fact - play Freebird over scenes of jack ranting and he'll come off as pretty rad. Freebird makes everything awesome. Frankly, I'm not sure why a presidential candidate hasn't figured that out yet. Don't try telling me the guy who has Freebird as his song wouldn't win in a landslide.

While 'Nam was without a doubt a bad idea, "waste of hundreds of thousands of American lives" is something of .... well that's just wrong. Total US deaths in 'Nam was 58,159 deaths. If you are counted wounded 303,635.
Large numbers yes but not so much compared to other conflicts.

I dont think they are zombies or its a virus. What these men maybe inflicted with is a experimental combat drug along the lines of LSD or PCP. Watch the movie Jacobs Latter, it will give you a idea what the game might be like.

The first Shellshock wasn't anything special when it comes to FPS gaming, but damn, it had some moments in it when it came to storytelling. I still remember the sick feeling I had in the pit of my stomach during the torture scene about 2/3rds through. What it lacked in gameplay it made up for in atmosphere.
