Lara Croft Makes Sharks Explode, Two Tomb Raider: Underworld Video Vignettes
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 9:30 AM on October 2, 2008
She's already moved on from tigers, now Lara Croft is battling sharks underwater! PETA is going to be pissed as hell. In the first video we get a look at some of her underwater combat. The second focuses on the old insane acrobatic platforming we've all come to know and love. Second video after the jump.

I guess I've been spoiled by Uncharted's motion-cap, Lara's animation looks really awkward. Hopefully the rest of the game makes up for it because I was looking forward to a good next(this?) gen Tomb Raid

It's simply a complete lack of animation blending... has nothing to do with the generation of consoles, just the level of tech sophistication of their engineers and probably the deadlines of Eidos.

What bothers me is how stiff the animation is, the transitions from move to move in the acrobatics movie was stuttered. After the amazing animation (and graphics) in Uncharted you would think they would step up to the plate...
This looks like a pass to me...or at the least a year later used half price purchase...love me some bargains.

It looks like bad compression on the movie.
Sticking a grenade to a shark is a gaming first as far as I know. Go Lara!

Alright... Is it JUST me, or do her movements look horribly choppy? -___- Like seriously. Take a look at her dive off the boat into the water... Her body literally pivots in mid-air...
With the current generation of consoles, I just expect more...

@Lazlo: Yeah, it looked really dated. Its also really hard for me to play an "acrobatic platformer" without comparing it to the Prince of Persia SoT series, I know its not the same type of game but the platforming in that game was so fluid and smooth, this doesnt seem like it. Oh and I hates games with underwater levels (but thats just me).

Posted 9:51 AM 2/10/08
@NorthernAvengeR: I thought it looked very mediocre. The underwater level looked like a poor 3D version of the Super Mario underwater levels and the second vid's cinematography when the bike pulled up reminded me of HeadHunter (DC) and then progressed into some kinda mix of Uncharted and Ninja Gaiden but without ninjas.

I think this game looks great. I love it. Though I find it disturbing that a pole sticks out conveniently where Laura needs to swing around where there shouldn't even be a pole. I mean have you visit the ancient ruin where everything made of rocks and all of a sudden a horizontal pole sticks out so you can grab it?

I'd love to know how she swims so fast! lol
Anyway, it looks like it may be entertaining, but the animations didn't look particularly well-done. Look at her as she jumps off of the boat. It is very jagged and angular, instead of smooth and flowing. Bad animation can ruin a game.

@Calavera302: Well, it depends how you look at it. With Uncharted, I liked not having to line up every jump perfectly, and the game's pacing was much better than Tomb Raider's. The characters were likable, and the game was good fun. Crystal Dynamics has without a doubt done a great job with the new Tomb Raider games, and I am definitely interested in Underworld, so hopefully it will turn out well.

@homernoy: Yeah, I'm gunna have to disagree there. Uncharted was certainly prettier graphically, but the platforming animations were jerky, there was FAR too much gunplay, and the puzzles were... wait, there weren't any puzzles.
Uncharted was just Tomb Raider for people who liked Gears of War.

Yes, it has a very uncharted feel to it but that is a good thing. TR needed a speed boost.
I like TR games and liked Uncharted. But I prefer the more puzzle element focus of the TR game over the shoot focus of Uncharted. Neither bad, just my prefs. So an Uncharted feeling game with TR puzzles sounds fun to me. :)

@DontCrossMyanimals: Well, Angel of Darkness was (I think) the last game to use the old movement system and be developed by Core (or was it Chronicles?). So yeah, Angel of Darkness killed the old-style Tomb Raider games, but if you've played Legend or Anniversary you'll know they're very different beasts.

Okay I think it's time animation in games actually took a step up the fluidity ladder. Enough of these canned animations that stop dead when the next animation cycle is hit, how about bringing in a bit of subtle follow through over the top of whatever animation is playing, surely there is some sort of physics coding that can do that.
I create game animation for a living, along with other forms of animation and stop, start, stop, start nature of game animation really kills the believability, especially on humanoid characters.
