LittleBigPlanet Devs Talk PSP Plans
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:40 AM on October 2, 2008
While the PSP has been out for quite awhile now, developers are just beginning to scratch the surface of the handheld's true potential. First SOE boss John Smedley talks PSP MMOs, and now Media Molecule co-founder Mark Healy talks about the possibilities of bringing LittleBigPlanet to Sony's portable.
"There's definitely scope for a PSP version," said Healy in an exclusive interview with (GamesIndustry.biz) sister site Eurogamer TV, to be broadcast next week. "We've had discussions and talks, [but] nothing concrete at the moment."
So the idea has certainly been kicked around, which is lovely indeed. What could be sweeter than a portable version of LittleBigPlanet? How about portable LittleBigPlanet utilities?
"It'd be great to make, for the people who are really into the Create side, some kind of companion products that allow you to create things while you're on the train," he said. "One thing that I'd love to add is the ability to create you're own music, for example, that you can import into the game. That seems like an obvious one to do and it'd be quite easy really."
Now these are some excellent ideas, and in my opinion exactly the sort of applications the PSP should be used for. The key lies in making the PSP a living, breathing extension of the PlayStation 3, to the point where a built-in PSP dock is a serious consideration when designing future iterations of the console. That'll be when the portable truly hits its sweet spot.

@zanzibarlegend: I agree. I think the gameplay of LBP is made to order for mobile gaming.

I'm curious...LBP has almost a Rare kind of vibe to it.
So, I wonder why MS didn't have Rare concentrate on developing a serious contender to LBP instead of wasting time on Banjo Kazooie N&B and the Avatars???
I think if Rare put their minds to it, along with MS, they would have maybe one-upped this brilliant game.
MAYBE.

The interesting thing is that they're starting to follow a route Nintendo made long ago with Gamecube-Gameboy Advance connectivity.
I'm truly surprised that Nintendo isn't taking advantage of this. The potential for a new Four Swords Adventures is completely through the roof considering how popular both the Wii and DS are now.
It pleases me to see Media Molecule thinking about these kinds of possibilities. However, I think I speak for everyone when I say we'd feel a lot better if they DID think of something concrete, rather than play theoretical-footsies.
Imagine for a moment, an optional level in Little Big planet that requires you and your friends having PSPs. You have a grand puzzle on your television, and chambers to go into, and every player has to figure out a little mini-puzzle on their own to piece together how the whole grand puzzle works. The playstation 3 could stream a video feed of what's occuring in the mini-chambers to individual PSPs, so that the PSPs don't have to do much processing leg-work. My biggest gripe with Four Swords Adventures was that the graphics, effects and animation took a notable drop in quality when the gameplay shifted to the GBA. Having the PS3 process the visuals and everything else could eliminate that problem.
Or maybe they could come up with a small application that you install on your PSP that, rather than take up valuable memory stick space, lets you choose what assets you want to upload and carry around with you, so you could go around and create custom backdrops, or level features, or perhaps meaningless decor that you would rather not spend time in your living room designing. I'm not sure how capable the PSP is in actually emulating the physics that LBP puts out, but I'm sure it's capable of something decent.
As for creating a seperate game for the PSP... I dunno. I think it'd be infinitely better to make the PSP purely supplementary to the entire experience. But that's just my opinion.
I sincerely hope they do go through with the connectivity idea, because the potential for it is undeniably awe-inspiring.
P.S. in case you were wondering. Yes, I DID make up "Theoretical-footsies" and I have absolutely no idea what it means nor am I convinced it even fits into context.

I don't think they meant that LBP couldn't be done on the 360 at all. From what I understood I thought they meant that LBP as it is for the PS3 couldn't be done on the 360 , but a version would have been possible that played on the 360 strengths, but it wouldn't be the exact same game.
Just like LBP for the PSP will not be exactly like the PS3 version, It might not even be an actual game, just a utility.

This said by the developers who claimed the game wasn't possible on an xbox 360. I would have had more respect for them if they just said that Sony was publishing their game and they have no plans for the game to be released on competing consoles.

Ack... That old interview (if you would have bothered to read it) said that the 360 question was irrelevant, since the game was designed specifically for the PS3, and playing to its strengths. Hence, no, it wouldn't be possible on 360, unless they made a different game. A PSP version would be just that, a different game.

N'Gai Croal had an awesome idea a while back, namely that Media Molecule should have tarted up and released on PSP their 2D prototype for LBP, Craftworld. They could have used some kind of XML, he argued, to allow levels to be shared between the two using system specific textures. I'm not sure if he ever got a response from them.

Hey, the PS3 can use a mouse right? Now, I've never played LBP, but I've yet to come accross a level editor that couldn't have been improved by a some point-and-click-ability. I would hope that at some point LBP could implement mouse support.

If they do get it on the PSP, it would be pretty sweet if you could upload/download user maps via wireless connection. That way, you and your friends could share maps while at work and such.
If its not possible, At least have the Remote Play option and we can do map sharing via remote.

I don't think any kind of creation tool on the psp would be possible. Given the processing power and resolution. But it will probably work the other way around. Games created on the console can be scaled down to be playable on the psp.

What they seem to be saying is that you will be able to get this PSP expansion that will allow you to do some customizations on the go as well as do some customization that will be exclusive to those that have the expansion.
While I think this is a really great idea, when I first read the headline I thought that they would be making it so that you could play downloaded levels on your PSP. I pictured it more of being able to take the playing aspect on the go rather than more the building aspect.
Awesomeness on all fronts would be for them to do both.

the idea of utilities is nice... but if they consider porting the game to the PSP and telling us now they're thinking of it, that seems like a bad idea.

it would certainly be rad to have some LBP things i could DO with my psp, in order to improve what i can create, and do in the PS3 version.
i do with that developers added more psp functionality to their ps3 games. it might not reach the widest audience, but the people it did reach would sing its praises to anyone who would listen!
anyways, i guess with out the ability to actually play the side-scrolling levels, a psp version wouldn't be as incredible.
