New Final Fantasy Game Playable On Both Wii AND DS? Huh?
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on October 2, 2008
Before we go any further, know that the full details on this are a little scarce, and we imagine we'll only get the whole story at TGS next week (or during the Nintendo presser in a few hours). But the latest issue of Famitsu says that upcoming Square Enix RPG Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time will be playable on both the Wii and DS. Same game, available on both systems. Meaning that the Wii version is - yes - essentially a port of a DS game. There's some other stuff about being able to play cross-platform (which is presumably the whole point of this), ala Crystal Chronicles, but again, we'll hold off on getting too excited until we get the full details from Square Enix next week.

Anyone else hate when Kotaku states a source such as Game|Life and the link doesn't work? Maybe it's just me.
But seeing as I can't see the source, I can't verify, but it seems unlikely that it would be the same game on both systems. I believe Luke is correct in the "a la Crystal Chronicles", but I believe it will be more true to that. Game for Wii. Downloads to DS.

@raviadso:
Look at this source: [www.gamekyo.com]
They translated the article from Shonen Jump and it says the following:
Play at the same time on the Wii and DS, thanks to Pollux Engine created by Square Enix.
- Players on the Wii and players on the Nintendo DS will be able to play online together.
- Different gameplay for the 2 versions (stylus or Wiimote).
- Story revolves around Charlotta and a mysterious crystal.
- You can transfer Mii characters you made to the DS version

Fuck you, Square Enix.
How about you learn to finish big games before you announce new ones?
I still want this:

Stop pulling Final Fantasy XIII's. Your announcements mean shit when we can no longer expect actual delivery.

Windwaker was crossplatform and that was phenomenal...if you had a very submissive little brother to torture into playing the Tinkle or whatever his name was.

@AdmiralRupert:
I really hate that Four Swords Adventures was a GCN title because it didn't sell well due to all the extra stuff needed.
It'd be perfect for the world where everyone and their mother owns a DS and no cables are required.

m@LittleBigPlaneteer:
The stronger part of the rumor is that the game will come out for both Nintendo consoles. Which is very doable.
The more wild of the two rumors is the rumor of cross-platform play. Nowhere in the rumor does it say that its like coop Halo. It very well could be like Windwaker and the GBA.

@raviadso:
Can you play them TOGETHER? No? Well that's a big deal.
If my friend owns a Wii, and I own a DS (which I do) and we both own the game, we can play it together despite being on different platforms, having different control schemes etc...
Multiplatform gaming doesn't happen too often. The only examples I can think of is the PC and 360 working together on a few games (or at least they have plans to do so).

Er...pretty much every site (Wired, 'GAF, Siliconera) seems to think that this is just a DS game being "upscaled" (in a VERY loose sense of the word) for Wii.
If that's true, this is like the most retarded thing I've heard of. Seriously Square, get your fucking act together.

I'm hoping the game doesn't require BOTH systems to play...but I'm kind of glad that they're at least supporting this facet of Final Fantasy. While the AI was **** in Ring of Fates, the game was pretty dang fun with friends. To me it fills the void I have in my heart from the lack of good Mana games!
What did the Squeenix exec say to the Covenant Elite?

The Wii version is no DS port. That makes it look bad. They're being developed separately but will end up being the same game in terms of gameplay and story. They won't look the same at all.
The game allows DS and Wii owners to interact in the same world despite the different platforms. That's what they mean by having the game playable on both.

Can someone tell me if this is just a new name for Crystal Bearers? Or is that game completely canceled now? Or was it already released as "Little King" or whatever that WiiWare thing was?
I actually enjoyed the first Crystal Chronicles game--played through it with my brother and my wife, had a lot of fun--but the CC "franchise" seems to be searching, practically at random, for an identity of its own.

I do like the idea of playing online with both Wii and DS players as other sites are reporting about this.
Cross-platforming, it's a good thing.
Now if only we could get Hudson to do the same with Bomberman.
Or Namco with Pacman Vs.

I can only hope this has the awesome potential as it does in my brain. This is (almost) the perfect FFCC game I wanted out of Square Enix. Interaction with the DS and Wii? Thats border line nuts! I'm glad they gave that option which will hopefully open more gamers to the world of FFCC. I was afraid it was going to be a single player affair (or maybe that game is still in development?) and not bring about the glory of playing a (lite) dungeon runner with your friends and family.
My perfect FFCC would be just like the original in that the DS is used as a controller (but doesn't have to be) and that it aids in battle like the GBA did(treasure maps, monster maps, normal maps, etc.)which then forces the players to work in together to survive a run. It's that very thing that made FFCC successful to me and all the kids around the neighborhood who would come over to play.
Of course, now that the game seems to support online I am worried that one of the most important things that keeps the game together-communication-will be lost due to Nintendo's flakiness with voice and online communication in general.
Here's hoping for the best.

This should not be surprising. It is not surprising. This is exactly why the Wii and DS are WiFi/wireless/dongletree devices. For this reason.
Honestly, we were able to add our Pokemon from Red Version to Stadium for N64. This should NOT, I repeat, NOT have taken so long.

@MerryPranksters: Oh how true.
@hagridore: Considering that its probably not a next gen handheld, just a redesign. Thats if anything even happens at all. But considering the DS is about as powerful as an N64, the GBA was as powerful as a SNES and the Wii is as powerful as a GC. Its likely that the next gen handheld will be near the power of a gamecube.

@gessyca: Really? Did you play it single player (bleh)? If you did then your missing a major part of what makes it fun (pretty much 99.9999% of why its fun). If your talking about the original GC one and you haven't played multiplayer, get a friend and play!
If it's not because of playing single player, and you've played with friends then all I can say is "different strokes for different folks."

@MerryPranksters: The only way this would be interesting is if the graphics are nicer on the Wii than the DS. That would be one wicked game engine (assuming it's the same engine and game just compiled to two different system specs).
I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the details are. Also, can the DS connect directly to the Wii using wireless or is a wireless router required for that?
