Nintendo Announce New DS: The Nintendo DSi
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:55 PM on October 2, 2008
During their Fall Press Conference today, Nintendo have - as expected - announced a new version of the Nintendo DS. Called the Nintendo DSi, it eschews the GBA slot (boo!) in favour of a range of improvements. The handheld's screens have been enlarged, and will now be 17% bigger (at 3.25 inches) than those found on the DS Lite. As for the rumoured additions, both have proven to be correct, with "audio enhancements" made to the handheld, while it will also now include a 3 megapixel camera.

Yeah, let's add a wireless encryption standard that only DSi will support! That way, EVERYONE will have to buy a DSi to play games together! Boy, I'm sure glad that [doa] isn't in charge of RnD.

Adding WPA-PSK support would not affect adhoc or infrastructure mode as they would always be able to switch back to WEP or unencrypted. Just a good feature to have for the security.

I can see myself keeping my DSlite and buying a DSi.
I think it has lots of potential. Hopefully nintendo will makes this worthwhile in the long run.

Only good thing is that used DS lites will cost less, maybe I'll actually pick one up. I'm so tempted because of the games available but I don't know if I'll play a handheld enough to make the price worth it.

"The DSi also features an SD memory card slot"
So you won't be needing a r4 anymore.
And doesn't half the population of the earth already own a ds of some sort?

well with the removal of the gba slot it removes a whole bunch of games but with virtual console for ds it could open up the possibility of just sticking the serial code of your gameboy advance game and then downloading it to the dsi and saving it on the sd memory card, you could have your whole gameboy advance collection on your dsi that would be nice but it probably won't happen.

Consider how many games actually take advantage of the GBA slot... not many.
A camera on the other hand can add elements like Final Fantasy: Before Crisis had to games.
With the SD slot developers no longer require a presence on the Previous generation to have a gimmick, they could offer the game online to be saved on the SD card and have the game:proper access that, the same way GBA games were accessed.

No doubt in my mind that the perverted Japanese developers are thinking of new ways to use the Dsi's features. Hmm lemme guess, an erotic DS title where the object of the game is to take up-skirt photo shots of unsuspecting women in subways, supermarkets...Pools? Is that thing waterproof?

This is interesting news. The only gripe I have is with the GBA slot. I still play GBA games and I also have Guitar Hero: On Tour so it sucks that I now have to have 2 DS if I feel like taking it with me on the go.
But I do have to admit that I am stokes for the DSiWare Store. VC on DS FTW. But the 3 people that bought the DS web browser app back in the day, should be feeling screwed over with the DSi having it built in.
I wonder how they will implement the camera in games though. Since it is faced away from you, taking pictures of yourself might become a hassle. Maybe yopu can use it as a webcam for the Wii. Then it would have voicechat and video (I'm pretty sure that 3 MP is good enough for a webcam). And the bigger screens explains why Phantasy Star 0 looks so good. Maybe SquareEnix will re-re-release a 3D version of FF6 (or FF5, which ever comes first). I hope it puts borders around old DS games and does not upscale though. As far as I know, the DS Lite puts a little black border around GBA games so that shouldn't be a problem.

I would have much preferred to keep the GBA slot and lose the camera. Every phone these days has a camera in it and it is only one more thing to breakdown/drain power. I really enjoyed Guitar Hero on the DS so now it looks like they will have to come up with another idea to get it working on portables.
I will be waiting on the DSiWare service to see if it is worth trading up, was expecting both screens to go touch.

I agree. It's hard enough trying to get a national dex (with exclusive pokemon scattered over 7 games before DPt), this'll make it even harder! Especially due to the fact that you can't request Pokemon over GTS that you haven't seen yet in your dex, which makes getting certain pokemon hard enough to get XD

I've finally cracked it! I finally know how to accurately predict the timing of new DS releases.
DSs are like number plates, once Nintendo goes through all the colour combinations like they have with the DS Phat & lite, they're forced to upgrade again so they can re-release all the different colours. The ultimate indicator is when they get to the metallics, that's a definite sign that we're getting to the end of a system life-cycle.
Just you wait, the next DS will come out once the new DS has say... um... in around 10 colours (excluding 3-4 metallic and 10 game tie-ins)

Would have been more exciting if they announced this at E3, granted it probably wasn't any more ready for the public than Wii Music was.
Also, the DSiWare Shop sounds like the same move Sony is taking with the PSN Store on the PSP. Much like Microsoft is having with avatars on the 360 as well as PS3's Home.
I forgot who said it, but I think it was someone from EA that mentioned something about one console or platform. While I doubt that'll ever happen, each of the major videogame corporations seem to be copying each other in some form or another. Kind of like the console cartridge era, only this time the updates come a good year after the last, just so they can milk their product for as much as they can and drill a new hole in the consumers pocket. I feel jerked.
This sucks, they can go to hell.

In fact i really think they could pull a MS Zune and allow current DS Lite owners to get some of the features available to the DSi. For instance access to the DS Shop. Nintendo could make it so you can have a microSD or SD card slot in the form of a GBA cartridge. That way current owners can download games from the shop too. Of course that won't happen though.

I'm really hoping they don't let anything use the camera and SD card as mandatory features. While it could be awesome for some of the store apps, homebrew, or as a non-essential feature to games, it'd suck if say, the next Pokemon generation required a camera for something or other.

Awesome. I lost my DS recently, and was considering getting a Lite, but I haven't yet. Good thing they announced this first.
I'd get it for the larger screens (I don't really care about MP3 playback or the camera, but the downloadable games thing makes me interested. Also the fact that I'm guessing new games will try to take advantage of the SD card or the camera or something).
The only problem is that they removed the GBA slot. Then again I got my own GBA SP for that. hmm..... but the GBA SP has no headphone port :( ...

No GBA slot is a huge negative compared to the "improvements". I suppose if you have a GBA SP or two and remember to take that along to play the huge library of GB and GBA games prior to the DS release then having a DS Lite that just does DS is okay, but otherwise boo.
Personally, I see no advantage to the sound additions, I pretty much always have sound turned off on my DS Lite and who needs yet another lame camera? Unless they doubled the battery life this new version just makes me want to stock up on another of the existing Lite in case mine is stolen or broken.
And yeah WEP only is still embarassing.

This makes me mad... I never bought the Lite, as that also made me mad. But, Kingdom Hearts is BY FAR my favorite game series of all time. And, Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days is coming to the DS. This thing has superior lighting, sound, and screen size when compared to mine.... If it improves the experience of Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days, I guess I'll have to bitterly set my principles aside.
GameStop BETTER give me a LOT of money for my DS as an investment towards the DSi.
Plus, this would mean that I can't get rid of my GameBoy Advance SP without losing Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories for the GBA. It is getting a PS2 remake, but it is still my current favorite portable game. Although, the new portable Kingdom Hearts games will surpass it.

This seems so unnesessary. I mean, sure larger screens ARE good - but taking away the GBA slot seems like N is shooting themselves in the foot.
I guess the idea here is their plans for the future. Being able to DL games to SD cards off the iDS store seems like a good idea. Could take off, fuck - who am I kidding, this thing is going to give rise to a new super dollar that only Nintendo can make.

Pretty neat except for the lack of the GBA slot. In fact that might sway me away from picking this up. I had my DS lite stolen recently and have been looking around for a new hand held. I decided to wait until I hear about the new DS and this is actually a bummer. Its neat they have a camera and SD slot and everything but, when it all comes down to it, its main focus should be GAMES.
I know this a DS handheld and not a GBA but what about those games that mixed both? Like the pokemon series that required you have some GBA games to obtain certain Pokeymans? Asides from that, it was nice that the DS stayed (a bit) backwards compatible.
However, the improved mic does keep me interested. That was certainly a bothersome problem with the current DS. The dreaded "BLUE" in Brain Age anyone?
Damn, now it comes to DSi, DS Lite, or a PSP! All with their respected redeeming qualities. How can I choose!

sheesh, that would be like a downgrade for me
and i have to pay for it too.

@Naaloq: Well...since Nintendo OWNS Pokemon they won't BE going anywhere for Pokemon fans to follow.

Wow, that camera is really, really lame...
A 3mp camera would have just done it, but 0,3? thats just silly...
And I wonder how 640x480 will look on a big ass tv when used with the wii...
What I do like is the sd card slot i just hope it allows music, pictures and video, it might be the one to update my old ds (2005 european release model) but then they would need to release an awesome new game with it.

It's telling of Nintendo's direction these days that everyone heard "A big announcement is coming" and rightfully deducted that it's a hardware revision rather than a game potentially worth writing home about.
(Don't get me wrong. I play my DS more than any other system I own. I'm just not playing many Nintendo games these days).

@WendelScardua:
Holy hell, that's even worse than I thought. GG Nintendo.

I hate nearly everything Nintendo did this gen, everything is too casual. The DS is keeping me interested, but I don't need an slight upgrade of a current model so i can bleed more money. I'll take my 200 bucks and put it toward the next gen system to come out.
