Pirates Of The Burning Sea Offers Free Trials
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:20 AM on October 2, 2008
The world's best pirate-themed MMO is looking for new recruits to sail the salty Caribbean in search of booty, glory, adventure, and...more booty, possibly. To this end they've launched a free 14-day trial open to all wannabe pirates and privateers who have yet to take part in the seafaring activities. Simply hit up the link below, enter your email address to verify that you are indeed a real person, and then prepare to download a metric ass-ton of files before you get command of your very first ship.
This is the sort of game that should have had a free-trial from the get go, really. The unique flavor combination of ship-based travel and battles with trading and character combat is something you really need to play before deciding if it's the right game for you.
Welcome to the Pirates of the Burning Sea 14-Day Trial! [PotBS]

Finally! I have been really curious to try this. Not curious enough to risk real $$ though :)

Cool, I'll try it out. I played the beta for like, one day because I couldn't get it working properly and how things were set up, didn't really get a good look at it.
Honestly every new MMO needs to run trials their first few months out.

What a terrible game...
4 years and still there's no mmo that can even lick the balls of world of warcraft.
PC gaming sadness.

While the beta was a lot of fun, it felt like way to much work. The whole economic system of this game was really what made me decide not to get it.

Ahahahaha. Don't know why that's so funny, but it truly is. Also, why are you reading and commenting on this site, considering your emotional hangups?

Stop posting gay bullshit noone gives a fuck about, kotaku is for losers who still wet the bed and go apeshit over stupid nonsense. Hardcore gamers more like hardcore pussies

I played this in beta and picked up the trial key over the weekend. It's a fun game, the player driven economy is great, as are ship to ship battles, land combat needs a complete redesign imo. I definitely recommend trying it out, although I just can't bring myself to buy the full game. Maybe if it was free to play.

Cool. Was wanting to play this game but no way in hell was I going to jump into an MMO without playing a trial.

If I could pull myself away from WoW, I would, but I'm just hopelessly, so hopelessly addicted so much that not even the magic of pirates and the high seas can pull me away.

The Beta was fun, I just have a hard time paying money for the install discs..

I agree, I wish this had a trial to begin with, then I could have tried it and decided it wasn't my cup of tea without spending money on it. :) I really wanted to like it, I just found the sea battles too drawn out for me.

I played the beta on this game and the ship battles are fantastic, out of the ship was kinda lacking. Overall my impression was very good, a worth-while game... if it wasn't so expensive. I know MMO's need the subscription, but this shouldn't be so expensive to play, it just doesn't have enough for me to find it worth paying a purchase fee and a subscription. I'll definitely play the trial again. If the case comes down to only paying subscription and a free game I might consider it.

I came really, really close to buying it after beta, because I absolutely loved the economy and crafting. And the ship battles, but land combat and the ports were kinda "meh" so I passed.
Enjoying WAR now.

I was pretty pissed they didn't offer free trials from the get-go, and by now my interest has somewhat passed.

Well, I downloaded and tried it out for an hour and a half over lunch. I found it rather fun. I spent too long on character creation making myself look awesome. The ship battles are indeed a good time, and you get into the ship combat scene right in the tutorial, so no long wait there. On land it was about average I would say. I did find the writing to be charming without being the cheeseball "harrr" puns I was expecting. I wish the tutorial had covered more, but I'll keep poking around for a few more days and see how it unfolds.

@LavernaMallard: I love how being disemvowled is almost as bad as getting disemboweled. I love trying to decipher what they originally said.
Also, Laverna is a douche bag.

I don't think I'll ever play another MMO unless there's a free trial to test it out first. I mean, you're rolling the dice to begin with if you get an MMO at launch because you never know what kind of functionality issues there will be, and then 6 months down the road some update comes and completely changes the game (Hear that, LOTRO?)

Game was not that great when I bought it when it first came out. Land combat was boring and basic, and the ship battles were near impossible. Leveling was brutal and I died every 10-15 minutes or so, and gave up after a few days.
I figured at the time the game needed to be patched to hell and back to make it more fun, and maybe a year later the game would actually be decent. So, maybe the game is ok now for all those who haven't tried it, assuming alot of its flaws have been patched up.
