Rain-Slick Precipice 2 Golded, Priced, And Trailered
Posted by Mike Fahey at 5:40 AM on October 2, 2008
Those of you eagerly awaiting the continuing RPG adventures of Gabe, Tycho, and dashing protagonist might not be waiting too much longer, as Hothead Games announces Gold Master Status on the PC, Mac, and Linux versions of Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness Episode two. The price is $14.95 across computer platforms, with the Xbox Live Arcade version the 1200 Microsoft Points, $5 cheaper than the first installment. The PS3 version is expected to share a similar price point.
In celebration of this momentous occasion, they've also released an official trailer for Episode Two, which I've tucked comfortably after the jump.
The Comedic RPG-Adventure Romp Continues This Fall for $14.95
VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Oct. 1, 2008 - Hothead Games is pleased to announce that the anxiously-awaited Episode Two in its well-received Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness game series has reached Gold Master status for the Windows®, Mac® and Linux® versions. In recognition of this momentous milestone, Hothead has further announced that Episode Two will be priced at $14.95 for download this fall via the Greenhouse digital distribution service (www.playgreenhouse.com) and other popular digital distribution systems or 1200 Microsoft points on Xbox LIVE® Arcade. The PLAYSTATION®Network version of Episode Two is also expected for release shortly thereafter with similar pricing.
"Episode One was a huge investment for us and established a great base from which we built Episode Two. It allows us to focus even more on the fans in developing future games in the series," said Hothead's CEO, Vlad Ceraldi. "Our new game has a lot of great enhancements that were made possible by direct fan interaction and we are extremely excited to get our game into their hands and get their feedback."
The madcap Penny Arcade experience continues in Episode Two where gamers return to the deranged 1920s universe of New Arcadia and rejoin Gabe and Tycho of the Startling Developments Detective Agency to visit crazy new areas, combat bigger and badder enemies, solve even more wacky puzzles and get ever closer to unravelling the mystery in the sinister heart of New Arcadia.
Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode Two has been rated "M" for Mature by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board for all platforms.

I'm waiting until the entire series is done... hopefully the'll put it on media and sell it retail at that point. If I'm investing that much money on "one" game... I want a box, a book, and media.

Okay im pissed. Think about this, first installment $20
second installment $15 so lets assume the same for the next two. At about 4 hours each this will make a $65+tax
16-25 hour (if you really suck) rpg. I liked the presentation and was hoping for $5 to $8 expansions.
But for a game that was not a multi-million budget and short by rpg standards (mass effect with expansion is the same price and potentially 2-3 times lomger) I just cant justify the price.

I can only say 'YAY!' to this. I loved the first episode so much.
They better reveal who the narrator is, soon, since he made me stop wondering who he was in the first episode. I can only hold off my curiousity for so long.

Played through the first one, and though it worthy of my dollars. A good game, solid if not outstanding, and I'll very likely buy the second installment. But, here's what pissed me off:
I bought ep.1 within the first week, straight from Hothead, and that was fine. But within a month they released on Steam, and after numerous contacts with both companies, I was advised there is no possible way to activate my purchased copy in Steam, at all. Meaning no achievements, steam-style installation, anything. Apparently they use a completely different keygen system!
So, I can only hope that with Ep.2 they find a way to merge the keys between Steam and Hothead.

I've never bought anything from the PA store, but I read that strip religiously. At the very least, I'll be pickin' up Episode 1 when it comes to PS3 - and if it turns out it's an awesome game?
Well heck, I won't feel bad about givin' 'em more money.

I've always enjoyed their strip and sense of humor, but I didn't enjoy the first episode. What I played of it, at least. It just wasn't engaging to me, everything felt needlessly clunky. Collision boxes, menu navigation, walking around the world... it felt extremely sluggish, awkward and unpolished. There were some redeeming qualities but not enough for me to get the full game. Shame too, because I really like the retro style (visually and game design wise) and their sense of humor.

@Murdermonkey: 16-25 hours for a game is pretty much the norm these days. Just look back at stuff like Baldur's Gate 2 that can easily take over 100 hours to complete while creating a highly engrossing and compelling story and you'll really wonder what happened to games of its caliber in today's market.

Posted 6:46 AM 2/10/08
@Foxstar Sixtail: I think that's a perfectly reasonable thing to say. The whole reason we all accepted the "next gen" $60 price point was that all the devs said they needed more money to make up for the larger budgets that were required. Obviously if they aren't taking advantage of those next gen budgets then they shouldn't have next gen price points.

@Mister_Jack:
I'm not hating on you Mister_Jack - but I still don't understand the ire that the first game drew on price.
I guess some people were fixated on whether it was less gameplay than "a third of a full-priced title", but I'd argue that it was certainly more value tan "two movie tickets", "one random DVD", "four assorted comic books", "400 pieces of dubble bubba", "that crappy thai lunch I had today" or any other of a litany of things which cost $20.
Seriously, are there a lot of "sub $20 gameplay experiences" to compare it against - at least outside of "big game hunter" bargain bins?
I certainly got more gameplay out of the first episode than, say - the two Strong Bad episodes two date... but I'd say they were both well worth the money.

@Boramis: Ah, I think I see the issue here. You're equating things that marketing people say with "truth" and "facts". Easy mistake to make.
Ease up on the game, it's entirely fun, it's a good few hours of pure entertainment if this genre is something you enjoy, and if you have the enormous sum of a whole $20 available to pay for it. If you don't enjoy the genre, or you don't have the necessary funds, then, well...uh...don't purchase it? Not too hard...

When I was at PAX I talked to one of the guys at the Hothead both about the next game. He told me the games would all be the original $20 price point, so this news is very welcome to me. He also told me they were going to make about 4 games. When I crunched the orignal math I thought, sheesh, $80 is a bit ridiculous. He countered that each game was a "full" game, to which I replied, "well, not really"... he had a very sad face when I said that. I'm still very excited for this new game regardless of price.
