Rock Band 2 Bonus Tracks Reg Live
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:40 AM on October 2, 2008
It's finally time, Rock Band 2 owners! The web page for the additional 20 downloadable tracks promised on the back of the manual is finally live and accepting registrations. Simply enter the registration code, fill out the short form, confirm your email, and those 20 free tracks are yours...eventually. What they're doing is getting people registered so when the tracks go live, they'll be able to snag them immediately, which I suppose is better than everyone trying to snag them at once.
Don't worry, there'll be ours eventually. Hell, we don't even know if we should look forward to them yet or not. I'm still holding out for a 20-song collection from Stan Bush of "The Touch" fame.

I find it interesting that they ask what songs you would like to see. Perhaps it's not finalized and it will be comprised of the songs most requested? Just a thought.

@NorthernAvengeR:
Just as long as you realize that it's your VAT and not Harmonix that is pushing the price up.

@Grumpz®:
Depending on which system you get, they will send you a code that you will be able to redeem via xbox live or psn or wii (???) to download the songs. Which means, the 20 songs won't even show up on the services and will only download when you input a code.

@Jakuub: "you either have to allow compatibility, or lose the sales to people who think you're a dick for tying your game to your instruments"
Ah, but once I've got my massive track catalogue, I can cut compatibility and gouge everyone to my heart's content. The heroin user may hate his dealer, but he just can't resist the heroin :)

@BritBloke916: In short, no, not with instruments being compatible with all the games, in most cases; you either have to allow compatibility, or lose the sales to people who think you're a dick for tying your game to your instruments. Not to mention that 3rd parties would be all over that if for some reason you did develop a large base, further cutting your instrument profits.

Your email address has been confirmed!
You're all set! When the Bonus Tracks are ready to download we'll send an email to the address you just verified. This email will contain a code that you can redeem to download the song files.
so we got a code that gets another code? This is because of ps3 right? otherwise we would've just got one code that worked on live eventually?

Aha, the neverending fight between GH and RB continues. If I was in charge of either, I'd probably set up a single online store from which players of my game could buy and download all the tracks from all of my other games, and then quickly add a hell of a lot more tracks by simply offering the rights-owners a deal in which they would receive ALL profits from the downloads of their tracks. With the resulting huge selection of tracks available for players, my game would quickly dominate and I'd make my fortune from the disks and instruments. Sound like a reasonable business case?

@R.C.Collins:
I'm glad I was able to throw in my suggestions. They're probably doing it more as a dlc in general bit.
As for the 20 songs, I'm pretty sure they have the tracks finalized or an idea which ones they want to release. I think it's more along the lines that they have like 30-40 songs to chose from and they're narrowing it down. Then they're going to release the good songs as pay for dlc.

@BritBloke916: No, no it doesn't.
You think making charts is free? You think this just magically happens? For a 1 time $60 fee, you're gonna put in so much more work in the end if you don't charge for more songs, yet keep adding them. And no one will deal with you anyway. Ya ever wonder why it took till GH3, and RB1, before we started getting master tracks? Its because no one wants to give a no-name unproven thing their tracks. It takes time and money to even get the rights to the tracks, let alone chart them, mix them, and get it working. Its not a simple "Hey can I use this song?" "Yeah" No, lots of legal stuff involved.

@R.C.Collins: If true, hopefully the 20 bonus tracks will be "More Metallica and Megadeth, obviously."
Guaranteed one of the 20 tracks is Freezepop though. It kinda feels wrong not to have them in this game. Kinda like... 80's edition (shudder).

@R.C.Collins: You win. I'm waiting for Queen, in any format. I'll be playing both the RB and GH series, so do it however, folks... just DO IT. I don't care about drum/vocal tracks... I'd settle for just the lead/bass parts.
I would absolutely love the 'GH:Aerosmith' treatment, though, complete with interviews, a dedicated venue list (Live at Wembley, anyone?), specialty guitars (Brian May's fireplace original), and more...
If I'm not mistaken, there's been ONE Queen song released among all GH/RB games... what the hell???

@AgainstOne: It's just prep work. So the servers that handle the registration aren't all slammed at once.
It also means you get the songs a little bit faster. If you're pre-registered, once the songs are available, the code turns up in your inbox, and you can immediately fire up your game system and get to downloading.
But if you want to wait, no harm done.

I really hope I'm not screwed by having a US Rock Band game, but living in the UK. Knowing my luck they'll be on the European disc and therefore missing from the European store.
Bah.
Still nice that they were interested in finding what bands I want in the game - it badly needs more modern UK guitar bands. If only for listening to Americans wailing about never having heard of them...

Hey FUCK YOU Fahey, 20 tracks of Stan Bush would be SO HARDCORE!!! You could set up a set list of Dare, The Touch, and the Saior Moon classic She's Got the Power and it would FUCKING ROCK!!
I'm just kidding about...100% of what I just typed, although honestly I think it's those Madden songs that they licensed...I mean wouldn't that make sense, as a promotional tool? I'd personally hope for Never Wanted to Dance by Mindless Self Indulgence, but how they would censor the vocal track is beyond me.
Please don't ban me for the "fuck you" it was all apart of my act :D
