Xbox Live Is Down
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:00 AM on October 2, 2008
At the time of this writing, Xbox Live is currently down. Turning on your Xbox 360 will give you a 'signed into Live' message, but then the system will idle for a bit (as seen above) and return to the sign in message. This of course follows Monday's background update meant to help prepare for the switchover to the New Xbox Experience in November, and the multitude of problems that followed. The US Xbox 360 support site currently lists Live status thusly:
Users will not be able to connect or log into Xbox LIVE. We are aware of the problem and working to resolve the issue. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
Patience, my friends. I'm sure the issues will clear up soon enough. In the meantime I urge my friends to stop IMing me to complain that they cannot play Call of Duty 4 online.
[Thanks Rodney!]
Update: Larry Hryb, director of Xbox Live, tells me that the engineers have figured out what's wrong and are working on a solution.

fucking crap. remember we pay.
also you should access live when you wan.t
P.S.N is free an doesn't have problems.
bare in mind you think okay their updating but then the time you give to say it's going to be back up should be accurate.
it's not that people don't go out or have places to go but if you want to access live at any fucking time in the day you should.
then they have to cheek to say it's still down, two days after a estimated update?
pricks man. they have figured out the problem? i have to bunch of wankers

@dowingba: Thanks for the heads up. Ill probably call MS here in the next couple of days. I dont want to miss any Fable or Fallout time if I dont have to.
I think before they will repair it, it has to RROD and stay that way. I unplugged it for a few hours and that seemed to fix the issue.
Ive had no indication of issues with this console, its never so much as frozen on me before.

Ever since the 24 hour downtime I've been unable to watch many of my videos on my 360 due to it not being able to connect to the video codec server or whatever it does. Why can't MS just load the codecs on my machine rather than needing an internet connection and who knows what else for it?

@KaneRobot: Xbox Live has been "down" for approximately 60 hours (since midnight PDT Monday). It's been somewhat functional intermittently since then, but we'll consider it one large blackout for easier math.
If you buy Xbox Live a month at a time ($7.99), you've lost about 65¢ worth of service.
If you buy Xbox Live 3 months at a time ($19.99), you've lost about 54¢ worth of service.
If you buy Xbox Live 12 months at a time ($49.99), you've lost about 34¢ worth of service.
Take the free game.

@parad0x360: That sometimes happens (the RROD thing). It will probably RROD again in the next couple of days and then keep doing it more and more frequently until it will no longer function. You might not want to risk it as you can lose saved data if it RRODs while data is being saved etc.

Hmm... Halo 3 has been having a problem since the Monday XBL update. EXP is not being rewarded for winning games. Yesterday Bungie said they were aware of the problem, and indicated in subsequent updates that it seemed to be a larger problem with Xbox Live and was affecting other games as well. Seems like the tweaks they did on Monday caused a few problems. Hopefully the current downtime means they're fixing the problem.

@DruDown007: It wasnt down for more than 26 hours when they updated. It came back online as it was suppose to. This is probably a glitch which is bound to happen when you upgrade a service like this.
Im sure considering all the new features they are about to put out there were bound to be an issue or two that didnt show up until some real load was put on the service.

This is an architecture design problem. Live is more centralized server which prone to perform bad when scales up. PS3 network architecture is distributed which tends to fail less and performs better when scales up.

Will they offer me a free game that is something no one buys anymore to compensate, instead of say extending my contract a few days for free for the time I missed? Probably. Well, more probable that they'll do nothing unless it's sporadically down for 40+ days.

X-box Live has been playing up ever since they switched it back on on Tuesday.
It was all laggy this time last night. I keep getting booted out of games on Halo 3, so switched to Call of Duty 4 where I couldn't even get into a game due to lots of error messages.
This morning, Live went down again. It went back up again a few hours later, again with lots of lag....and now it's down again!!!
Here's hoping X-Box do the same as the last time this happened and give the Live Subscription holders some free.

This is clearly the result of one thing. Demand for the return of the Blue Bomber was greatly more than anticipated, and has flooded Microsoft's servers with requests for the full game.
Under the might of the fans of favorite robot, Xbox Live's servers crumpled like Little Mac on the receiving end of a Mike Tyson Super Uppercut.
Sure they keep struggling to get back up, and they hit select during the break in rounds to try to pad their life, but we all know that if they go down three times it's game over, man. Nobody gets up that third time, TKO or not.
And Mario's standing there, taunting. "1... 2.... 3... Don't you wish you could download Mega Man? 4... 5... 6... Hey look, all of these numbers are Mega Man games! 7... 8... 9... this wouldn't have happened if you downloaded it on MY console... 10!!!"

It amazes me how quick so many people are to crucify XBL when it's down for a day and a has a few hiccups every once in a great while despite the fact that in between these rare occurrences it is the most stable online service most of us have ever had the privilege of using.
People seriously want compensation for this? XBL is like $4 a month. It was down for a day (which anyone who pays attention would have known about a week in advance) and it's having a few hiccups after an update prepping for a MAJOR system overhaul. What the hell do they "owe" you? Like 26 cents?

What do all you people complaining about this do outside of video game?. I wish I had as much time as apparently many of the people here do to play video games.
Just today for example I have class until 4, I have a story to finish writing/editing for my college paper, I have to go bug the administration about a FOIA request I filed but have not heard back on yet, hope to get some ultimate frisbee in, gonna cook dinner for my girlfriend, and maybe if I have time catch up on Fringe and Chuck. This isn't even considering the chapters I should be reading for some classes.
Are some you honestly not able to cope without live for a couple of days? Seriously go ride a bike, read a book, or god forbid play single player. It just boggles my mind to see a majority of the internet melt down every-time live goes haywire for a little bit.

@GrumpyJedi: It's not very accurate to break it down like that. There is a significant inconvenience factor here that is missing from your equations. If Live cost 1/7th of what it did currently but you could only play from 2AM to 2PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays, that wouldn't exactly be an enticing proposition. Reliability is supposed to be one of the things you pay for as part of the LIVE fee, or at least that's what advocates of the service seem to want us to believe.
It's not a big deal to me right now, but I can understand the frustration of those who were hoping to get back in the game after the update was applied on Monday. Hopefully whatever is causing problems is resolved in the next day or two.

Msoft just took another $50 of my money from my account without even asking and at the same time they're stiffing me on access to the service they make me pay for. I'm not about to denounce the 360, but if you're going to charge us shmucks money to play online, then at least throw us a f-ing bone (and not Undertow!) for once. I want 800 spacebucks. I think all of us lowly subscribers should get 800 spacebucks. It's not like I'm going to spend it on Rock Band tracks or anything, right?

"Xbox Live will be brought down for maintenance on Monday for about 24 hours, but since we're gonna fuck it up like we always do, be prepared to experience problems logging into Xbox Live for up to a week after the scheduled maintenance date. Because at Microsoft, maintenance really means fuck things up."

I didn't realize that you can't watch Divx media on the Xbox when you can't connect to live (or at least I could not yesterday). I watch it pretty much every day, no issue, doesn't have any problem.
Is this just with files you haven't played before, or is this everything? I was rather disappointed that my media STB was fuxxed because I couldn't connect to their server. I'm working off of a NAS, if that makes any difference.

it's amazing how much people complain about a little downtime and then want something in return. if the service is down a day or two then that's the breaks. that doesn't entitle people to free games or a free month of service.
if the service was down for more than a week, then yeah compensation would be appreciated. not a free retail game or a free month of service, but perhaps a free xbl arcade title. if the service was down a month, then yeah you would be entitled to a free month of service or something of equal value to the month of service ($4 or $5).
it's just that most people always want something for nothing or feel they deserve great compensation for a little inconvenience.

@Surlaw-the-Mai: The problem with that is that you may not have to worry about PSN going down, but you do have to worry about Sony's "updates" bricking your system. FW 2.4 anyone? I was one of the lucky ones who updated, and end up with a very large $600 paperweight (60gb PS3).

People seriously want compensation for this? XBL is like $4 a month. It was down for a day (which anyone who pays attention would have known about a week in advance) and it's having a few hiccups after an update prepping for a MAJOR system overhaul. What the hell do they "owe" you? Like 26 cents? "
$26 Cents across million users....

I dont understand why people whine so much about xbl going down for short times. I mean, its so trivial and the fee so small yet people are complaining?
I pay for internet service, but it goes down atleast once a month for a minimum of a few hours, sometimes more.
I pay for Cable TV, which goes down roughly once every couple months for a few hours, sometimes more.
I pay for Gas, which sometimes gets shut off for a day every few months or so.
I pay for Electricity which also gets shut down on occasion due to natural events(maybe once a year)
And the list goes on, point is we pay for a lot of things far more important and yet we never recieve compensation for those. Yet here we are whining about $5 a month on a service that is non-essential because "we pay for it"?
It just doesnt make sense to me.

I love xbox live, but when mine ringed my wife couldn't play any downloaded content unless she was using my gamertag that had to be signed in at the time. I tried redownloading the content and using the license transfer tool with no joy. Ended up having to spend an hour with 3 different people on customer support before I got to someone who had a clue what the problem was and how to fix it. After that no big deal but I held off on making that call for damn near 6 months because I knew it wouldn't be resolved quickly and easily, and that an hour or more of my life would be lost for good. Oh well, still a good service for the money.
