First Uncharted Movie Details
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:30 PM on October 3, 2008
In case you missed it, our own Mr. Hollywood, John Gaudiosi, ran an excellent feature this morning on the Avrads, and their plans to start making video game movies that don't suck. If you haven't read it, it's good stuff, go read it. If only because Avrad gives the first details on the Uncharted movie project, which until now had only been hinted at.
When it comes to the big screen adventure, Arad said the plan is to mix things up a little bit. In the game, the action moves very quickly to the island, but the film will open things up a bit and add some depth before the island adventure.
So, more talking, more sexual tension, less gunplay. Avrad also stresses that Nathan Drake is not just another Indiana Jones clone, saying "Indiana Jones was always a good guy and he relentlessly did the right thing. Drake is a guy who's being hauled over to virtue throughout the game". The story should at least make for a half-decent popcorn flick, but wasn't the main appeal of the game the fact it already felt like a movie?

This might not be terrible. Uncharted wasn't an epic like Final Fantasy or deep like Silent Hill. It's just a feel good action adventure, which I think is much easier to pull off on screen.

Uncharted is much like Max Payne, as both games incorporated elements found in the film industry. Ultimately, adapting either game to a film is essentially grabbing the material "borrowed" from the industry to begin with and recycling it. It's not going to end well and will come across as mediocre and unoriginal due to the contrast between the gaming and film industry.

Who said that movie adaptations of video games were offensive because they undermined video games potential as a story-telling medium? Was it Destructoid's Jim Sterling? Because he was right on the moeny.

"So, more talking, more sexual tension, less gunplay."
Dammit. Roughly translated, they need to get some shots of a babe in skimpy underwear, plug in some innuendo, and the only way to fit this in is to splice out all the good stuff.

Uncharted was a bit too cornball for my tastes. Leave the visuals and animations, but you can keep the dumb plot and cheesy dialogue. I laughed, like, once.

@DukeOfPwn:
Um... why not - ***VAGUE SPOILERS***
Nah, Drake was an out-for-himself treasure hunter. Even when he gets to the island with Elena, he very quickly decides to forget the search for his ancestor's legacy because it becomes too challenging - only Elena reels him back in.
Drake's evolution into The Good Guy is one of the (several) reasons for the gameplay switch-up towards the end, with the enemies that everyone seems to think were a horrible, stupid idea.
Nobody notices that without those enemies, and without the treasure that creates them, Drake would have no incentive to change from Greedy Treasure Hunter to Guy Who Saves The World. The story of Drake's Fortune is the slow transformation of Drake from a wisecracking treasure hunter to a wisecracking hero archetype.

Could not agree more. Nathan Fillion always struck me as a perfect Drake. From the dialogue to the mannerisms, he seems perfect for the role. I actually assumed a good chunk of the inspiration for Drake came from Mal.

I realize I'm going to get a ton of flack for this but while Fillion would be a good choice, I can honestly see Ben Affleck as Drake. People have called me crazy for it before but I just see a lot of similiarities between Ben and Drake in both looks and personalities.

I always thought that Nathan Drake was a good guy, from beginning to end. The only reason he ditched that girl at the dock was that he was peer pressured by Sully, and I never noticed any other instances that would qualify him as anything other than good.

Uncharted was the single-most derivative, blatantly exploitative game I've ever played in my life. When it ran out of popular games to copy from, it started copying from movies and television.
That said, it was still great fun and one of (if not the) best PS3 game yet...or still. Unfortunately, I'm not sure the game's sub-par, derivative story would play well on the big-screen. The whole time I was playing I couldn't help feel I was watching some USA Network prime-time show...
Anyone else feel the same way?

@B33: This is 2008. We have been borrowing and re-borrowing our own material for at least 30 years now. This is inevitable.
Don't believe me? Look at how poorly "video game movies" perform at the box office. And still Hollywood is compelled to make them. Why? Because reappropriating appropriated material is in our DNA, as of the 1980s, maybe a bit earlier.

He pulled out a gun and shot a guy in a knife fight. Anyone who plays Counterstrike knows that's a damnable offense.

@loserguy:
"exploitative"?
The game was an homage. Pure, unfiltered, unadulterated homage to American pulp, the same stuff that inspired Indiana Jones. 'Cept with Uncharted, they tipped it into the modern era. If it had been actually exploitative, it would have been a shallow copy of the material that inspired it. It wasn't. There were more than a few fresh twists, that spelled out they knew their source material inside and out. Not only that, the game effortlessly reflected how much they heart American pulp fiction. Hence, homage.
Haven't had a funner time with a game in a long time.

@loserguy: Yep, i do. Read my previous comm.
Whether an homage or not, it was unoriginal in almost every way. They didn't go very far in trying to make it stand apart from its source material. And what, it's modern because Nate Drake has that status quo, Justin "I'm a Mac" Long/Family Guy, stuttery, blatantly snide white man humor? Then fuck modern and pulp altogether.
The one time i laughed was when Drake was visibly mad about something and yelled out in genuine frustration -- I laughed at his misfortune. That's how the likes of, say, a Tim Allen, would produce the chuckles. It's the one and only time in the game, apart from the heroics at the end trying to save the girl, where Nate's NOT trying to be a smartass.
There's really nothing special about the plot of Uncharted, and the movie is bound to be the same. Cept with 2x the wisecracking.
