Let's Flick Through The Gears Of War 2 Manual
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:20 PM on October 3, 2008
This turned up tonight. Looks real enough. It's missing some pages - most likely those detailing story/plot issues - but there are still plenty there. You see new weapons, you get rundowns of new multiplayer modes, you get a manual that looks like it was dipped in a cup of tea. None of what you'll see is new, but there are bound to be a few of you excited by an unreleased game's manual, so for all the pics, click the link below. Oh, and no, I didn't put that accompanying text in there. Presumably Dude Huge requested it be scrawled in at the printers.

@macr0planet: Report them ?
It's not a crime or illegal to use third-party controllers with added functions like turbo.

this would be great if the lancer was worth piss in multiplayer. now if there was a way to duel while diving like an idiot with a shotgun, that might actually add something.
meanwhile, everyone's killing the two hard-ons standing still in the middle of a battle.

@Ed_209: That would either take too long (the whole chainsawing event is like 2 seconds) or would be too fast to be competitive.
To be honest chainsaw vs chainsaw events are kinda rare. Most chainsaw attacks are from behind or on unsuspecting opponents and they are still insta-kill. I like how they've removed the utter randomness of the duel.

@eakolb: You never knew who was going to get killed when you ran up to each other with a chainsaw in the first game. Having to rapidly press "B" doesn't sound like much of a fix either, I would rather it be a guessing game like in the first one.
What they should have done is made it a battle using analog sticks, like balancing against each other etc.

Personally I was hoping for a few more new weapons than that ... all the new ones are big one-offs that you're probably not even going to bother carrying because it would mean losing another, probably more generally useful, weapon.

@eakolb:
Still far better than running at a gun with a chainsaw, only to be chainsawed by him because it could be so random. Thats the main part here. Its less than a 2 second button mash and cuts down on it being so random, like the first one was.

@eakolb: You were really expecting something else for the gameplay mechanic? I thought it was pretty obvious that this what it was going to be.
Personally, I don't think it is that bad. It is not as much the mechanic itself as how it will impact the pace of the game that interest me.

what kind of duel is that exactly? And why are almost every game "duel" the same thing? press b fast, or a etc.

@SSJ4_Macd: Yes you can, players are no longer in god mode when chainsawing. If you go to chainsaw somone, start the attack and are sniped in the face mid chainsaw the person you are attacking will still die but your head will go pop also. During a duel I assume the same logic applies.

@SSJ4_Macd: trust me, the lancer is so much more useful in Gears 2 due to the stopping power effect. And also the shotgun/roll crap has been considerably nullified. Although even in gears 1 multiplayer if two or more of you concentrate lancer fire on single enemies you can easily chew them up.

@Đipic: obnoxious, homophobic children are the norm online and particularly in gaming. I wouldn't say it was specific to Xbox Live, I'm sure it's just as bad on PSN or Wii online, but because voice is so rare on those platforms you barely hear them.
I'm in my late 20s and the group i usually game with online are all around the same age, we're not homophobic and are massive Gears fans. I just feel making sweeping generalisations is silly and just antagonistic flame bait.

I think the best solution for this, is a quick Rock. Paper Scissor decision. Duel Chainsaw, press a selection of 3 buttons within a second, winner of the rock paper scissors, wins the duel. If your opponent doesn't select within the time frame, you by default are the winner of the duel. This will keep the action going fast paced. Button mashing leaves cheaters open to buying turbo buttons, which is cheating but can never be regulated.

@Đipic: I think i'll have to agree to disagree. Personally I feel that the perceived general poor behaviour of Xbox Live gamers is a product of voice chat being so prevalent. Headsets are in every Pro and and above package so therefore almost everyone has a voice. Fact is people are assholes in general as as soon as they are given a means to share their stupidity then often they can drown out what's good in a community. I generally only play with my mates who most of them I know in real life and are decent people and Xbox Live is just fantastic for facilitating our gaming needs.
Aaaaaanyway, Gears 2 looks brilliant and along with LittleBigPlanet I can see myself spending far too much time in front of the HDTV for the rest of the year, woo!

@NecronomiconUK: I'd prefer that you stop putting words in my mouth. I never said those kinds of people are specific to Live but the fact is they are most abundant there than any other online gaming service out there. I haven't played much online with my PS3 as I only picked one up recently. However, I play a lot of games online (shooters, no less) on my PC and I will tell you that the community in general is leaps and bounds more mature than what you see on Live. Of course you run into the occasional asshat but no where near as often on Live where, instead of being the exception it's the rule.
Again, I never intended to insinuate or make generalizations that everyone who plays on Live is an obnoxious homophobe. That was presumptuous on your part. The fact is, however, that you are much more likely to encounter those kinds of people there than on any other platform.

I too wish it wasn't tap B repeatedly. I'd also much rather it be a game of controller Rock Paper Scissors, best of 5.
A beats B
B beats X
X beats A
Y == Random
You're 100% right, speed tapping is too boring, and open for exploit.

The thing that worries me about those button mashing duels is people with turbo switch joypads. They are going to win every single time.
Unless the game has some way of disabling them (which I doubt) it's going to cause a bit of a ruck among players.

This doesn't happen often enough to make turbo fire a decent exploit. Generally turbo is only decent when you can leave it running, or have time to switch it on/off as needed. This situation is rare, happens fast and the A is used for a variety of other tasks.

I disagree. In Gears, B is only really used for the chainsaw thing so it'd be perfectly reasonable to assume you could switch turbo-B on all the time and just leave it until you duel.
I guess the tapping might screw you over when trying to START the duel, right enough, but I don't know.
