Nintendo Pedometer Is For DS Walking Game
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on October 3, 2008
Mystery. Solved. That mysterious Nintendo pedometer from the other day has turned out to be more than a patented pipe-dream, as it featured in yesterday's Nintendo Fall Press Conference. The pedometer is to be bundled with DS game "Your Life Rhythm", which is basically a Brain Training/Wii FIt kinda program, just for your DS. And all you do is walk. So exactly like a normal pedometer, then, just a little more expensive, and a little more fiddly, since a normal pedometer doesn't make you plug it into a portable gaming system just to see how far you've gone.

I hear you can also use the camera(s) on the new DSi to take pictures of your perceptively receding waistline and share your success story with gamers all around the world

Sweet! Sounds like Nintendo is right on track to debut other useless peripherals, so it's looking good for PowerGlove2 in 2009! I love the PowerGlove...it's so bad!

A pedometer tells you how much of a pedophile you are right?

It has to do more than tell you how much you walk, right? 'Cause if people need a DS to remind them to walk at least 30 minutes a day, that's a bit sad.

I play the walking game to work every day!
But seriously, a walking game? Nintendo's ideas of gaming is getting farther and farther from my idea, which is an escape from realty (and challenge for my brain).

@Jaysius: Tell me you're joking?
a pedometer is a little device that measures how many steps you've taken while carrying it. from the latin ped- for foot and you should know what meter means....
And I have no idea of the origins of the word pedophile, sorry.

Wow, you know I always want to rush to defend my lifelong lover Nintendo, but this is ridiculous.
If you're going to make a game about walking, it might as well be a GAME about walking. Off the top of my head I picture something like the potable chao game from Sonic Adventure for the Dreamcasts Visual Memory Card, only the distance you've go is how far you have walked. Throw in getting rare equipment for walking really far, and character battle and I would buy this and make everyone I know buy it too.
THAT WAS OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD NINTENDO, surely you can do better.

@Jaysius: Yes, you're correct. Combined with that witch touching game, the device will scan your body reaction when playing that game and show how much pedophile you're going to be. And they will have trophy and online ranking so you can be motivated to be more pedophile and be the number 1 pedophile in the world.

@Ajh: *raises hand frantically* Me! Me! I know! It comes from the Greek "paidos" for "child", and good ole "philia" for "friendship/love".
Interestingly enough, there's another Greek word that gave the root "pedo": it's "pedon", which means "ground/soil", and is found in a whole lot of nouns that have nothing to do with children.
Etymology is FUN!!! (from "etymos" + "logos" = the truth of the word :D )

God people not everything needs to be directed at your cynical gaming asses for consumption. You know who this PRODUCT is for? People like my father, a 50+ year old professional who never really understood my whole gaming addiction as I was growing up, but who just last year bought himself a DS and all the brain training/sudoku games he could find, and uses them regularly. How hard is it to understand that you can develop a PRODUCT for these game systems, not just games? Are you guys such jerks that non gamers who might want to use this product should be scorned?
I cant believe as a gaming society we are so feeble minded to think that a company either has to develop all games or else its a sign they are abandoning games for good. We aren't that stupid I hope.

A WALKING game? That's gotta be the worst game idea I ever heard of. You can make little people walk in nearly every game. And if you want to really walk, do you need a game to help/motivate you?

It's official, Iwata and Miyamoto have both gone nuts. The next Zelda game will require use of the pedometer, and whenever you play it, Link will only walk as many steps as you have walked that day. It will also include a minigame where you conduct an orchestra of darknuts playing flutes, fiddles, ocarinas and a dodongo playing the accordion.

@ridepod: You know, to be fair, I can see the value in this thing. Especially if it's cheap. It's not a 'game', so what? It's a tool.
I mean, let's consider someone who A) wants to walk/jog to lose weight, and B) already has a DS. Instead of using a regular pedometer, going home and writing on your calender how far you walked, calculating crap like calories burned yourself, and trying to get your family to give you a pat on the back for all this crap, you pay $20 and get a device you stick in your pocket that keeps track of all that junk automatically, gives you crazy goals and probably gives you a big on-screen fireworks orgasm for completing those goals.
Seriously, why do people have these wretching, horrible reactions to non-games? You think Nintendo's just like, "lol, let's never make another zelda nau!1" or that they're taking huge teams of people OFF of hardcore products to make these? BS. A 'convenient' product like this takes a few tech guys to hump up a DS pedometer and a handful of guys to make the interactive bits. It's not like they're cannibalizing their A-list teams to make Wii Jog or some shit.
P-Flute

S'not a game. It's a tool. Keeps track of how well you do, keeps track of what days you hold to your goals. Probably provides calories burned and stuff. Probably gives you all sorts of constant encouragement and advice as well.
If you're looking to lose some weight by walking or jogging or...something, and if this is affordable, then it sounds really convenient. If you have a DS, anyway.
B'sides, what do you guys even care? They didn't take anybody off of any of their hardcore gamer teams to make this. They didn't go EVERYONE STOP MAKING MARIO WE NEED TO MAKE PEDOMETER DS. They probably have a dedicated team for it, and it probably doesn't interfere with their 'hardcore' development even a little.
