Here's Your Kotaku (Video) Podcast (Maybe)
Posted by Brian Crecente at 4:00 AM on October 4, 2008
Here for your viewing is another little video experiment we're tinkering with. I know people have been wanting us to do a podcast for quite sometime. And I want to do a podcast, but frankly I hate how bloated they've become. Also, I really wanted to do something with video. Oh and I like shooting people and arguing. So we came up with this.
Consider what you see here a test run, a beta of sorts. We're thinking of adding more people and perhaps topics to a single run. Let me know what you think. As always, your suggestions are invaluable. But for the record, I'm not THAT flexible.

You (Kotaku) really have to turn off the automatic page refresh. There is no way for this video to cache before the page refreshes.

This is interesting, do you guys think you could post an audio only version? The video is really choppy on my end, and is basically just distracting. Either way, keep up the good work, just figured it would hurt to ask :)

I agree with you Brian, podcasts are starting to get a little bloated. There's a difference between an informative conversation and rambling. I think what you guys did here was interesting. It might be nice to see some more participants, which would bring deeper conversation and more action.

Ok watched it all now. Good discussion.
Bit of constructive criticism which seems unfortunately to be unavoidable with this format.
I find that whenever somebody tries to talk to me when i'm playing a game I have a hard time giving them a quick clear concise answer, because i'm paying attention to the game and my brain can't process it properly.
It seems like a similar thing was happening there, with long pauses after questions and that sort of thing. But there's not a lot that can be done about that without recording the voices at a seperate time. Which kind of defeats the point.
But yes. Enjoyable veiwing while i'm munching away at my pasta.

Metroid Prime 2 multiplayer green-Brinstar-SNES-remix music FTW, and ironically I just posted (on another forum) how MP2:E's multiplayer in the wiimake could actually be useful with the lack of split-screen FPSes (the only being Red Steel and Quantum of Solace is the only upcoming FPS with it)

I like the discussion and doing it ingame was a nice touch. Would be better with more people, there was a lot of running around with out anything going on.
If you add more people to the game, please keep a limit on who can talk. I think 4 is a good maximum for talking heads. (I noticed you didn't use the in game voice chat, so this shouldn't be hard).
I liked how you kept score on topic points, but if that HUD could be less obtrusive during the chat, including the "DING" that accompanied it, that would be great.

I'm torn on the issue. Like they said, on one hand if he was never posted about then he'd just be a lunatic nobody (instead of the relatively famous person he is). On the other hand the more they post, the more everybody realises that he shouldn't be taken seriously.

Unless I've missed it, not one person so far has commented on what Crecente and Mcwhertor are talking about but rather that they're doing a video podcast. I think that's sort of unfortunate since the whole purpose of a video podcast is to create commentary, not just "Ohhh Awesome Team Fortress!!111"
I agree with Crecente that the commenter's should be the one to comment on Jack Thompson's statements and that Kotaku did very little wrong in being the messenger. I don't relate what JT says to rumors from a site with no credibility as Mchwertor suggests. I think JT created his own persona and while in his mind he thought he was doing the right thing, the way he went about it was completely wrong.
I don't think you can truly point the finger at Kotaku with the whole JT mess. Even if Kotaku didn't post a single article about JT, he would have still gotten himself in trouble with the law. Additionally other news outlets would still cover him and who knows, perhaps some out there would support his baseless claims. I think places like Kotaku give a good balance to mainstream new sources where the voice of gamers would otherwise go unheard.

Maybe I'm being too sensitive, but I find it sad that a man lost his job, and this is the way you choose to discuss it. Whether Kotaku and the rest of games journalism should be held responsible for Jack Thompson, the Team Fortress video's both bland, bloated and, in Jack Thompson's case, inappropriate. I don't get what it's supposed to add to your discussion.
I respect the idea of the video podcast and it may be great for other topics, but a man lost his job while fighting videogame violence. Discussing it over a violent videogame, while calling him a loony and washing your hands of guilt, well, that's not fun and games to me.

It's a little A.D.D. in some ways.. at least watching it.. But I am impressed that you guys can carry on a conversation and play the game all at once.. I sometimes got distracted from the conversation whilst watching the fight...
But towards the end I started to be able to follow what was being said and enjoy the gameplay at the same time... And I suppose I would tune into this more than I would a podcast. I don't really listen to any podcasts except for some NPR stuff when I miss a specific segment. I tried listening to IGN's podcast, but they ramble on a bit and are usually just teasing a rumor or two they have heard... But your discussion was more interesting than other gaming podcasts because it was an actual debatable topic of conversation... As long as these discussions have a purpose and interesting topic, I'll check em out.. but if they devolve into rumor mill i probably won't.
Also, the conversation was interesting, but seemed to end a bit abruptly... I know it's not a topic that has a clear-cut answer or conclusion, but it seemed to just stop suddenly.
Anyway, that's my 2¢.

You say your'e giving him too much face time on the site and then essentially dedicate the first Kotaku "podcast" to him. Ironic?
I agree that by allowing everything Jack Thompson does to be posted on the site is giving him some type of validity in the gaming forum. Even if that is as a moron who all gamers hate, thats allowing him to let inside our magic circle.
Jack Thompson is the gaming worlds version of the Phelps family. Who if you forget (which I hope most have) protested soldiers funerals with signs like "Thank God for IED's" and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers".
They had no place in mainstream media and by allowing them to project their platform to millions you the media helped them succeed.
While I think it would be ignorant to just ignore Thompson, constantly disecting his every move makes him look like a credible villan to gamers everywhere. All that needs to be known is that he is a nut job who obviously never got past the first board in PacMan

I feel that the competitive gaming might interfere with having a serious discussion. I think it's great that you guys are trying something new but it might become even more hectic with more people in this current format. Honestly, I believe using PS3's Home would probably be more suited for it. It would be interesting to see you guys utilize the features of Home which could allow for Kotaku readers to join in the conversation by logging into it. Of course, it's not even out yet but I always thought that would be a cool way to do something of this nature.
Still, whatever you guys choose to do, I'm sure it'll be great. :)

Really enjoyable, guys. Count me in the affirmative numbers for keeping it. I'd recommend McWhertor become a staple of the (suggested) vodcast (?), if only to fan the flames of my man-crush on him. Oh, but for the day I can exact revenge on Shindokie for his McWhertor-op at the E308 bash.

@TechnoPirate: Thirded. This was both entertaining and informative. I think it's the perfect format for a gaming blog. My personal belief is that Jack would of done anything to get attention, and I don't think Kotaku or any other gaming website "created" Jack. I wouldn't necessarily miss the Jack Thompson coverage as I don't think it really adds anything to the discussion, but I don't think you need to stop covering him altogether. We've grown used to hearing news about someone who's so against gaming, and how that affects us.

I like the idea, but the execution could use some work. If you're going to have a video podcast in this format, I would think there would be more visual stimulus than just watching you guys run around and try to find each other.
I would suggest a co-op shooter or a fighting game to add more visual to the conversation. Personally I like the co-op idea better since Kotaku is a team and the idea of you guys splattering each other just seems to take a little of that away.

You should absolutely cover JT news. If you don't then no gamers will know about the threat that we need to be vigilant against. Having the people who need to counter-act Jack's spreading of disinformation just ignore him would only allow him to spread his lies without check. Mainstream media would cover him simply because he's sensational. McWhertor killed his own argument at the end, you need to cover him to let people know what he is saying and what the truth is.

Posted 7:12 AM 4/10/08
Personally, i think the format is a bit more juvenile than im used to. Though you do a better job at staying on topic than i think alot of people are, playing a game while trying to be professional just doesnt work. Also, i think alot of people are more focused on watching the game, and are losing alot of information cause theyre not really listening to you.
However, Kotaku is, for the most part, the most juvenile game news site i know if, so i guess it works for you guys.
Some tips: maybe have a video of you talking where your name is. (to draw more attention to you and not the game), maybe have the video of your head expand a little when youre talking.

@Shiro_Shishi:
Yeah, i like the format, also the above mention of using different games as well.
RTS's might be a little more conducive to train of thought, but the lack of it is half the fun.
Imagine Street Fighter of something of that pace. Would not get much talking, well, useful talking points covered.
Does not even have to always be vs. either, co-op, etc. Like co-op Gears of War 2 when it comes out...

I think that this can become be a pretty unique format, but it needs some tuning, I think. For more clarity, bob your head when you're talking, and/or have the camera focus on the current speaker. It got confusing at times.
To make it more interesting, I think you need to connect the gameplay to your conversations more, instead of just commenting about a sneaky kill or something.
Basically, act like you're actually inside the game, instead of watching from outside. It'll seem more normal and wierd at the same time. Alter your weapon/class choice and/or behavior based on what you're talking about, etc.
I don't know if it was intentional, but the second half of the video looked more interesting, especially the last minute, even if it was unintentional. Mainly it was because you started playing other classes, but in the final minute you subtly referred to the number of emails by playing with miniguns. Was that intentional? It was a good bit of deadpan violence.

Your both right and have valid points. The answer is to find the correct balance, yes he made silly claims but he managed to make them on national TV, (no fault of kotaku). Someone had to take the task on and prove what he was spouting was a load of bunkum as the national media will never do it. There isn't enough of a story to make them do it.
Nice format for the podcast but you should definitely change the game every pod cast though.

My two cents:
Here's the thing: Jack Thompson had been getting high-profile appearances on mainstream media outlets before the rise of videogame blogs (of which Kotaku is one).
What has the tenor of been of his appearances post-videogame blogs, I think, is a better question with a more useful answer.

I really enjoyed listing to the discussion whilst you two vs. eachother in TF2 Some suggestions?
Definately Rotate what games you play in, like one game soul calibur IV and talk whist you beat the crap out of eachother, doesn't have to be limited to shooter games.
You should definately host like some sort of like Discussion forum with some of the commenters here whether on XBL, PSN, or on a steam game (like a mod where its free to download). Increase the interactivity and really allow us to (hopefully) have a cool interactive discussion whilst killing eachother

Hey guys, Great Podcast
Jack Thompson got disbarred because of Jack Thompson, NOT Kotaku. I don't know who would be so stupid to defined Thompson at this point, but... the man is CRAZY and seriously needs medication. We're talking Schizophrenia -- and at his age, the ship is sinking FAST. It's only going to get worst and you (no one) want to be around when the "suicidal" end comes. So, bye-bye, to bad rubbish, I say.

Awesome; I'd enjoy it a bit more if there was a bit more visceral venom and passion on the part of the debaters (even if you have to fake it a bit.) While the irony of putting up a straw-man argument even as you carelessly torch your opponent with a flame-thrower is appreciable, can you imagine humiliating your brazen buddy with a corpse-hump while victoriously giving their debunked argument a rhetorical corpse-hump?
Two alliterations in one post, go ub.
