MadWorld To Be Released In The US And...Uh...
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on October 4, 2008
Platinum Games' MadWorld looks great. Really getting the most out of that Wii hardware. Should be a blast! But if you live in Japan, Australia or Germany, be warned: you may be on the outside looking in on this one. While the game is to be aggressively geared towards the American market, it won't - as we've pointed out - even be shown at TGS, and releases in other "sensitive" markets - like Germany and Australia - are "not part of Sega's strategy right now". Bummer. Best you Germans and us Australians can hope for is that the classification boards go easy on it on the grounds it's "comic" violence.

Australia is not a sensitive market and the the reason game bans take place is because of Michael Atkinson/lack of an 18+ rating for games. Nobody else really supports these game bans but the problem is that the politicians in this country don't know the definition of "democracy", so one man is continually allowed to dictate 21 million people. This clown has even admitted that his opposition to an R18+ rating is based on his own personal views. In reality the vast majority of games get released in AU uncut and even so the problem with Australia supposedly being a 'sensitive market' is only that the classification system for GAMES is flawed.
The system for movies and publications works fine. Music isn't even legally classified or regulated, so this bullshit constantly perpetuated by the U.S media needs to stop. That's not to say the system isn't fubar but the media has a responsibility to report factual news, not subtle 'my country is better than yours' articles.

Gah, this means they'll censor it in the UK, just like no more heroes. Quick! To the import cave!

@Gestahl: I don't pretend to know anything about the Australian government, but presumably there must be, if not a bunch of people supporting it, at the very least a bunch of people who are happy with simply allowing the censorship to take place. Otherwise, it wouldn't happen.
Just because you and your buddies are okay with violence doesn't mean it's not a sensitive market.

Guh, yeah, the country of Ichi the killer and killer7 is not ready for that. I love that the game is so artsy and absolutely not realistic... What's the problem? Anyway, can't wait to play it. Wish there were more style-driven titles.

I'd prefer if everybody, including Kotaku writers stopped perpetuating that Australia is a "sensative" market. It's not. We have one such individual, and he's in power.
A more accurate way to describe us would be a market with "classification problems".

Yeah, I'm reasonably confident that it'll be slightly tougher to get a hold of if you don't live in the United States. Of course, if the game ends up sucking (I hope not!), then I don't think the rest of the world is going to particularly mind that they missed out.

Can German gamers import it easily, Germany being part of the EU, if it comes out in the UK? Also I'm not Australian, but if I was, I would be really pissed off at my government's terrible rating system. On an unrelated note, I hope this comes out for PC, 360, and PS3 seeing as I don't have a Wii. I mean I can see the problems with bringing an Xbox 360 game to the Wii, but the other way around would work, and would probably be profitable. Unless the studio is owned by Nintendo, going multi-platform will always make money. And who doesn't like money?

@Gestahl: I am Australian, and there is a huge tolerance towards sex, language and violence in the media. Censorship laws are far more laid back here than in the US.
The problem with games is that people see it as marketed for children. People see packaging violence in games as the same thing as offering a Barbie doll with a BDSM outfit and gigantic dildo accessory.
I've come to the conclusion that there are three foundations of Australian society: Sex, violence and the protection of children from the other two.

It might pass through the Australian censorship bureau. It's very violent, but the violence is extremely stylised, and as far as I know there's no sex or drugs or the like. It really depends on the 'tone' of the violence as to whether it gets passed or not.

Well, glad I got my Wii chipped; seriously, I have 40+ DS titles (region free, imported from hong kong, US/JP titles for 30-40$ AU a pop) and 4 original Wii titles (from day dot... first in line mofo's!)
We're getting destroyed over here with incredible cool-off periods - the games are shipped via carrier pigeon I believe - amazing mark-ups (you'd think the AU$ was .40 USD) and a ridiculously backwards rating system care of the OFLC!
All of this I wouldn't mind if we could legally import our games and choose the titles that suit us, without dictation.

@Gestahl: I'm sure you know that Luke is Australian and was using "sensitive" markets to mean those that would make a fuss about releasing the game, unlike other countries where they don't need a second thought. In that way we are a "sensitive" market and will continue to be until we can push out the guy stopping the changes to the classification system.

This should be okay down here as long as it's comic violence, stuff like Dead Space which is about scaring you with the gore isn't liked but over the top stuff like Ninja Gaiden seems to be fine. The fact that it is Sin City style means they could get away with the "artistic game" angle. I hope so anyway, this is one reason I am tempted to grab a Wii.

@mfwahwah: I like Yahtzee but the effect has worn off and I haven't found his videos entertaining for a while now. Was good while it lasted though, doesn't help that The Escapist adds 5 minutes of ad's to the end of his videos (and whatever sponsor is around for the week at the front of the video). Needs to revamp the crappy opening music too, reminds me of the ctrl+alt+del animated series opening.
On a related note my local Gametraders shut down, was a great place to get cheap DS and GBA games too :(

We've got enough german online shops who simply import austrian copies and play like a german one if it actually came out in Germany.
Maybe it's going to be severely cut, like No More Heroes (no splitting body parts, no blood), but I wouldn't want to play the game like that.

The game appears to be tongue in cheek, so should probably get released fine here.

The difference between Australia and other "sensitive" markets, is that unlike most of the others, Australia's censorship laws are likely (read: all but guaranteed) to be changed within the next year or two. I wouldn't say the same for Germany or Japan's.

@Pspimp:
yup, people in the UK did indeed say they wanted it banned by the BBFC,because of them not wanting the game because of the violence.....instead of them just staying away from the game, they decide upon themselves that everyone else is offended/shocked/whatever about the game, and try and make it so that none of us can see or play the game for ourselves and make our own judgement
thats how the UK works
