I think the confusion comes from the fact that this is the same as RE4. Seriously, I'm really disappointed that aside from co-op, this seems like they copied RE4 down to a t and pasted it onto next-gen platforms. But, since I haven't played it, I still hold some hope that it might surprise me.

As of right now, though, I'm not really looking forward to it.

Looks like RE to me. And that's a good thing. I don't want it to deviate too much from the RE4-mula (clever, I know). You shouldn't be able to move and shoot at the same time, part of RE is the feeling of being cornered and swarmed and having to get your shots off before they close in on you.

From what I've seen, gamplay-wise, it's the same. The hud itself looks the same. A lot of animations are recycled and left unaltered, especially the hit reactions and death animations of the villagers. I played through RE4 quite a few times, so it's pretty obvious to me. After the amount of development time this game has had, I just expected more original elements or a gameplay system that had significant changes to make it fresh.

But, I do want to point out that I haven't played it yet at all, so I could be wrong and they've implemented lots of new stuff into it by the time I get my hands on the retail release.

And I'm done.

@ZombiePuppy: Did you play 4? If anything, this is more colorful. RE4 was very, very grey for most of its environments. And it worked pretty damn well too. Not to mention that there are quite a few bluish and greenish tinted shots in this gallery.

I really think that Sheva might be your co-op partner for only part of the game. She'll die or you'll find out she is bad, and you'll get to play with someone else, like Claire maybe?

If they can pull off co-op, I think that'll be enough for me to at least give it a try. RE4 was quite an enjoyable game, so even if it doesn't divert too much from that formula I wouldn't be too disappointed.

@SpadeAce: Well, 4 in and of itself was a pretty big jump from the first three, which all shared pretty similar animations and whatnot from what I saw. I can see what you're saying, though - this is 2008, 4 was released in '05, and the first three games came out ten years ago - this is a different era.

Holy Shit! I think this game might have some serious racist undertones to it. I can't believe it.

On a more serious note, the resident evil franchise is one of the most exciting franchises out there. Resident Evil 4 reinvented Resident Evil for a new generation, and did it beautifully. Resident Evil 5 seems to continue with what Res 4 was doing, and doing well might I say, and refine it and polish it even further.

I am so excited for this game. It just looks amazing. When RE4 came out, I didn't think that they could possibly make that game engine any better, but it looks like they're about to fucking do it.

4 was a breath of fresh air, since the series had gone stale by the time Code: Veronica had come out. Shinji Mikami took a big chance by changing the formula with RE4 and it paid off. With RE5, I was hoping that they wouldn't fall into the same trap as they had before and continue to do new things with the series (even though Mikami has left Capcom), but it's going right into it. It's disappointing.

When will Japanese developers learn to let go of the HUD. Developers in the west have either completely abandoned the HUD or have figured out ways to make it fade out of sight when it's not needed. No giant red blotch with a picture of a shotgun or green circle or dials or yellow digits to spoil my western on-screen hijinx but for some or other reason, Japanese devs think that kind of on-screen pollution looks good.

In MGS4 I could make my menu screens purple but I couldn't have a clean screen.
