Source Mods Free on Steam
Posted by Brian Crecente at 9:30 AM on October 4, 2008
To celebrate the launch of MODs on Steam, Valve is giving away five "leading Source MODs" to anyone who owns a Source-based game. The publisher is also offering Half-Life 2: Episode One on steam for $5.
The free MOD pack comes with Age of Chivalry, D.I.P.R.I.P., Insurgency, Synergy, and Zombie Panic.
"Valve has been supporting the MOD community since the company's inception, offering updates to the SDK, holding MOD Expos and being the first to bring a MOD to retail with Counter-Strike in November 2000," said Doug Lombardi, vice president of marketing at Valve. "The debut of these MODs on Steam marks the beginning of a new level of support for the MOD community by putting the leading MODs at the finger tips of over 15 million targeted gamers."
Once the MOD pack, available now, is installed it will appear in the Steam "My Games" list and the MODs will receive automatic updates just like other games on Steam. Also, the MODs support Steamworks, providing stat tracking and tighter integration with the Steam community.

Another fantastic mod, surprised it hasn't been added to steam already considering Valve lent a hand to the creator.

Great move by Valve. Played DIPRIP for a few minutes and it was pretty fun.
Going to try Zombie Panic later, but i've heard that there's a HUGE lack of servers (ie they're all full).

I'm still debating on purchasing the orange box, but since they have source games on them, I think I will go pick it up for this reason.

Zombie Panic is one of my favorite mods for HL2. I played the hell out of it over winter break last year. I figure I'll probably check it out again around the time Left 4 Dead comes out.

@GusherKid: The point is they're all now hosted directly on Steam, are downloaded via Steam's servers, and are properly part of your games list.

Yeah there's hardly any servers just now and they're always full. And when you finally get onto a server its so laggy its barely playable.
Come on server owners! Switch over from CS for a few days at least :D. We need servers for these mods, they look like they're a lot of fun and very polished.

Weren't those mods already free? I mean I know Zombie Panic was. Oh well, I'll be downloading the rest of them. Thanks for the heads up!

Zombie Panic is really fun, if you have real friends to play with. It can be boring, but it ccan also be really intense if you play with people that know what they're doing..
I just wish you can pick up objects and barricade a room, instead of hitting them to block a door, hahah

While the Source engine offers vastly improved opportunity in game design, it seems like it's also been quite a barrier to entry for would-be mod developers. The original Half-Life was modded quickly and easily, producing a large amount of utter garbage but also a few enduring types of gameplay that have been recycled and improved upon in more recent games. The modeling requirements have shot through the roof as gamers come to expect graphical excellence, however. Half-Life mods could focus on the gameplay more because people just cared a lot less about polish.
Then again, the Half-Life engine sure has been around a long time, so maybe I just need to be more patient with mod development.

@Deathcrazy:
Has it gotten better since last year? I gave it a shot, but it was soooo sluggish, it was hard to play. Hell, the craptastic America's Army was even better.

@adocious: We can't just stop the graphical evolution just because mods are made easier that way.
Plus, simple games nowadays are liked as much as complex ones.

What an awesome move by Valve. It's such a great way to promote third party mods. Honestly though, I'm surprised they didn't do this years ago. Great job nonetheless!
@Spidery_Yoda: Right now there is a lack of servers because the majority of them are still using the earlier version. It'll clear up within the next couple of days.

@adocious: I think this can be attributed more towards the advancing graphical tastes of gamers rather than the difficulty of the source engine. As gamers demand bigger textures and more detailed models, modding becomes harder and harder, but there is no lack of valiant tweakers up for the task.

You know, I just finally picked up the orange box a month or so ago, and I've been pretty active in modding in the past, but I'm having a really hard time finding good info on simple modding for HL2... There are TONS of undocumented console commands, and most of the basic things you'd want to switch around in the game seem hard to figure out (changing clip sizes, swapping out npc models, etc etc)

Lets just hope that this continues with other mods like Dystopia (which is, hands down, the most wellproduced mod i've seen for HL2 yet) or The Hidden.
This could be the thing that makes these mods more mainstream, meaning more servers and more players, which is always a good thing :)

Check out Insurgency! It won the Mod of the Year 2007 award on moddb.com! Might be the perfect game for you if you think cod4 isnt realistic enough or the maps are too small.

And people keep calling out the death of PCs. The reason PC gaming will never go away is right here. because it's a gaming community by the community for the community. Even if all the corporation walk away there would still be games getting made for the thing.
