Settlement in Take Two - Chicago Bus Ad Suit
Posted by Owen Good at 7:00 AM on October 5, 2008
Remember the lawsuit over the Chicago bus ads for Grand Theft Auto IV that the city took down after a TV report created bad publicity? Seems a settlement is in the pipeline. GamePolitics is reporting an agreement has been reached but there's no comment and no specifics.
Back in April, Chicago saw a headline-grabbing wave of violence -- close to 40 shootings, seven of them fatal, 13 of the casualties school age. Around that time the GTA ads went up on city buses, like they were in other cities, per a $300,000 contract between Take-Two and the city. Because local television's business model depends heavily on the exploitation of others' fear and misery for profit, Fox News Chicago called up a bunch of chickenshit pols and huffed about the appropriateness of the ads. So they were taken down. Take-Two then sued for breach of contract.
I'm not sure what the terms of the deal are but maybe this'll teach someone to show a little spine next time some blow-dried shit-for-brains TV reporter waves a microphone in their face.
Take-Two Nearing GTA IV Ad Settlement with Chicago Bus Company [GamePolitics]

Lol @ Chicago. You were paid to advertise and you didn't hold up your end. As for the increase in crime? That's probably because... well, it's Chicago. Lrn2 not be a ****hole of a city.

@EVIL_V2: Greedy how? The CTE didnt give their money back, so because fox news ran a propaganda piece T2 is supposed to lose their investment?

Take Two paid for advertising and didn't get it.
That's all there is to it. The city agreed to show the ads, and they took them down.
For the most part, it has nothing to due with the news, because the fact that the city decided to take them down because they were pressured has nothing to do with the contract between Take Two and the city.
They should have talked to Take Two before taking them down and said "Heres your money, sorry, we can't do this" and come to some sort of agreement.

This won't be the first nor the last time idiotic politicians waste taxpayers money. There's no lesson learned. Fox News isn't going to correct themselves for the record. They didn't do anything for the whole Mass Effect debacle. The politicians don't care since it's not their money.

to bad this is a loose loose situation for take-two. not only does fox news come out with propaganda with the shootings, take-two looks like a greedy company for going after there money that they used to market this. o well the world still turns

@EVIL_V2:
yea what you said makes no sense, how are they GREEDY for wanting their money back after they didnt get what they paid for? if you bought a movie ticket, and they decided to cut the movie off after the first 10 min of the movie, wouldnt you want a refund? or would that make you greedy...

This really isn't a Fox (or Fox News) thing, it's just the local Fox affiliate here.
While some of their investigative reports on local political/business shenanigans are admirable and result in positive action, they're still susceptible to bandwagon-jumping for the sake of the idiot masses/ratings ... but what mainstream news outlet isn't these days?

Hopefully Take Two got a good settlement out of this. I know the local Fox station whined about GTA, but let's not forget that the other local networks (NBC and CBS mainly) also did stories on this and bashed the game. The news media just doesn't get it, regardless of company. Let's call all the networks out on this, not just Fox, because they all share blame. I really don't want the USA or particular regions of the USA (such as the Chicago area) turning into Australia or Germany.

@blue bed: This has nothing to do with Fox News, it is the local Fox affiliate news. If your going to bash someone over something it should at least be over something they are responsible for.
I know its popular to bash Fox News but IMO they are no worse than CNN or MSNBC or any the other news network.

And what does hosting the Olympics have to do with anything? It's not uncommon for shitholes to host it.
Example.
Los Angeles has hosted the games. Twice.
Nazi Germany hosted it once as well. They must have done terribly too, because a year before the next Olympics, they decided to be bitches and invade Poland.

Great job Owen! The News loves making up stories when they have none! There like "whats hot? Oh that video game? A kid died while playing a game he loved and that was his last wish? No, no, no...He died BECAUSE of that game!...Yes it caused his death!" or "THe kid didnt eat for a whole week and died playing W.O.W.! If the game didnt make him stop eating, little Timmy be alive right now!!!"...No if Little Timmy wasn't a complete crackheaded retard and actually had parents that knew how to do their job(parent), maybe their child wouldn't be so stupid and still sitting on a computer playing the game while crapping their pants! Do they ever run IQ tested or look into how the parents were retarded and had retarded kids? No! But it's a news story now and that's the way we get people to throw dollars at us and get ratings, because we're News people... And just for the record Im not talking about Mentally Challenged people who can't help themselves. I'm talking about all those idiots that should be considered mentally challenged, but by the grace of God they still keep finding a way to dodge that test!!!

scape goating is the way. science and religion are great at staging stapegoatness. belief systems have way of exempting the status quo from responsibility. we humans use data or god words for this very reason. correlate the digits, the prophecy, the truth to a point, to a vector, to a individual and voala! you have it, everyone knows the reality, that Fox had the moral character, the American will, to point out that thing which was wrong. its always a thing to blame, not the context, not the failure of capitalism or Kants way of defining Reason.

I'm from Chicago. Lived here for most my life before I went to school out in New York. Now I'm back. There's the background.
Given that, this year has been terrible in terms of public school kids getting fatally shot. It's really sad and depressing and there are a plethora number of reasons which I'm not ready to get into here. It's never been this bad.
Does GTA have anything to do with this? Absolutely not. It's just fact.
The radical circumstances this year bring the question. Are these ads, or ANY ads that feature gun-toting leads, in good taste? Would you tell that to a parent to one of those gunned down this year? These slayings were senseless. The same senseless violence I enjoy while playing GTA. These ads could be argued as salt on a wound to a community struggling with tragedy.
The Chicago Transportation Authority has a bigger obligation to its overall community than to its sponsors, and even the gaming community.
The thing to separate is taking ads off buses will do nothing to stymie you, or any one of us, from playing GTA or any other game. These are totally different issues.
Has nothing to do with Fox/Fix news. Did people who don't understand gaming make the choice to pull the ads? Yes.
Take2 has every right to enforce its contract. But they come off as greedy douches without issuing anything acknowledging why Chicagoans could be sensitive. They're fight doesn't affect game sales much. They still sold pretty well, IMHO. Ha.
I've never lived here when so many kids were being gunned down.
But overall, this is much ado nothing. I just don't understand why the gaming community is so upset.
Shok

And just to add to my original post, I'm sure most of outsiders don't realize how bad gun-related violence has affected the city of Chicago in the last few years. It was PARTICULARLY bad during the last school year (just when GTA IV) came out. Local media, citizens, and politicians were FREAKING OUT as every week another 2-3 children were gunned down.
I'm just pointing to the political/social climate that led to this decision.
HOWEVER! I do not condone censorship or breach of contract. I'm just trying to make that perfectly clear.
