A Look at the New Xbox Live Marketplace
Posted by Owen Good at 1:00 AM on October 6, 2008
Major Nelson takes a look at the revamped Xbox Live Marketplace (which is a little like "Action Figure Man: the How to Buy Action Figure Man episode" from The Simpsons) and of course concludes that it's awesome. You can compare the two "experiences" with the images above (bigger on the jump) and more on Hryb's flickr account. For those not necessarily wondering how streamlined their buying experience will be, just when it's all over with, he says "The New Xbox Experience will ship later this year. As in before the New Year." No real news there, but it's nice to have his personal assurance.

I'm really beginning to like the new Dashboard.
I'm still not too hot on the Avatar idea, but considering you can disable them, I'm gonna really enjoy the change.
A lot of people complain about "wasted" space. I honestly don't feel like the space is wasted. The current Dashboard is super cluttered and bad on the eyes. This one simplifies things and leaves much more empty space so your eyes can relax a bit more. I'm sure Microsoft did a study and realized that the dash was too cluttered in because of this, many people just jumped into their games rather than exploring the dash.
I mean, if you're gonna talk about wasted space, what about the PS3? There's sure a lot of nothing going on there. But you know what? That's also why its dash it way better than the 360s!

It LOOKS nice, but I'm worried about the usability. Are we just endlessly navigating to the right instead down now? And how easy is it to return to the root menu? Do I have to go all the way back to the left again? Is there a search function? Can I preview themes and avatar/gamerpics now?
This 'preview' managed to answer none of the questions that mattered.

@boringjob2: What would you rather have? The old dashboard which makes using themes completely useless because of the fact that every single theme makes the entire interface unreadable. Or this one where at least you can actually use your themes.

@Apparatus Ex Somnium Design: Wait, you can disable the Miis? In that case, then I'm all for this redesign. Being someone who recently got their 360, I definitly feel the bloat and user unfriendliness of the current system. It's not bad; there's just too much stuff on there (which really seems like a lame complaint, but I don't want to have to scroll through 47 MLB and NHL games to get to something).

Hate it, big time. Low visibility, unclear.
Only good points are visual improvement ("crisp", as mentioned), and got rid of the ugly Orange background... those it's only there. Rest of the time there is this ugly gray floor that takes half the screen.

Can't say I agree with that sentiment. Using available realestate doesn't mean crapping a million hyperlinks or images onto the screen. Alternatively they could have dynamically enlarged your active tab to take advantage of the space, with headers of each tab visible/tiled. And avoided the itty-bitty eye-strain-oh-vision (thanks Yahtze) I'm of the camp that more isn't always better and simple UI's have their own appealing grace. But neither is it a zero sum game of more vs. less.
Wasted space is just a poopie scenario which makes me a sad panda.

@HueyFreeman: I think the further we get away form using words like "fags", "gays" and "retards" in our everyday lexicon, the better off we'll be. They say more about the commentor than the actual product/person/thing itself. I mean, they're not particularly funny, witty or insightful, they're just PLAIN LAZY. Would it really kill you to be a bit more creative? For example, the sentence "LOL Look at these Avatards!!" at least shows theres some cognitive thinking at work. The difference between rbee90's instance of using the term "retard" and Tropic Thunder's was that Tropic Thunder's "Full Blown Retard" was actually used to great comedic effect.

At any rate , I welcome anything that looks better then the blades system it currently has. The black text on dark gray for alot of themes was poor graphical planning at it's best.
I haven't followed the hype train on this , so I don't know anything about it. I just know I'm not interested in those avatars being on the screen and cannot wait to turn them off.
As long as the text is easier to read and it doesn't waste alot of screen space with pointless graphics I'm all for it.

@Real Serious Assassin: Cheaper Price does not equal one either. I don't regret buying my x360 but I find it hard to fill my library with good original games for it.
( Oh and before anyone starts , please don't mention sports games , shooters , pc/xbox games and the whole 5 rpgs for it ).
Both systems are good though. I'd keep them both. By selling one you'll be shooting yourself in the foot not being able to enjoy many games from all the consoles.

@robinandtami: If you really must browse from a console; I think the Wii has the best browser of the three.

@휘성: No, but anyone who uses their 360 as a Windows Media Center extender can use the MCE add-on browser. Honestly though, I've only used the browser for the PS3, 360 & Wii for about an hour total between the three. I just prefer using my desktop or laptop for browsing.

@Ramonskito: Hmm , so the xbox is like a tv. Ok. Hmm.
Since I have paid my money for a system...yes. It's mine , I should be able to control the interface content for giving them thier due of 60.00 a year.
At least an option to have them cut down or disable them all together.
Sony is the content provider for the PSN...and thier ads stay in the store....

@휘성: You should! If they are on the same home network anyway, it's great for playing your own music while gaming. Also the sound card on my PC recently crapped out a couple of days before a big party, so I used my 360 to play music on my onkyo 606 & klipsch's in my living room AND my Sony DG720 & polks in my gameroom; at the same time. I gotta say it sounded much better than my PC ever did.

@휘성: Thats ridiculous. That's like saying you wish you could make all the TV commercials go away because they annoy you and that you don't have control over the TV that you bought just because the network producers show you ads whenever you watch your TV.
Microsoft is the content-provider for Xbox Live. If you don't like it, then just set your Xbox to autoplay games.

@robinandtami: Hmm , sounds neat , I'll have to give it a whirl.
I usually just plug my PSP into my x360 and get the music from there when I'm running about in a game for custom music.
I wonder if the PS3 and the XBOX would have conflicts being both connected. Shouldn't though. I'll try and hook that up on my next day off and see how it works.

@휘성: The PS3 and 360 don't necessarily have conflicts. But with some routers, in order to get the PS3 to connect to your computer as a media server, you have to do some things that will either end up disconnecting your 360 or at the very least giving it a bad NAT status. The problem is on some routers, you have to turn off uPnP and then assign the PS3 a static IP and make it the DMZ host in order for it to have the media server functionality without causing you to constantly lose connection to the router. But without uPnP, the 360 won't have as good a connection to Xbox Live (but the media sharing capabilities will still work fine).
As far as I know, this only affects Linksys routers though. And it's a pretty big security flaw with the router itself, and it may have already been patched via firmware upgrade.

I like the idea of the following pages appearing so you can see where you are navigating, but for me (in AUS on a 1.5Mbps 3rd world connection) thumbnails for games and themes in the marketplace can take up to 20 seconds to load. So with a less than perfect connection, will users only see a bunch of blank spaces?

@휘성: No conflicts here, but I have a pretty nice router; the Belkin N1. I never could get my PS3 to even connect to my wi-fi with my old linksys without manually inputting all of my network settings and disabling UPnP. The Belkin connected to my wi-fi easy peasy.

@boringjob2: "Why's there so much wasted space?" is one of the most irritating things a designer hears, on a daily basis, from moron clients. It's such a prevalent "occurrence" that Swedish ad company Agency Fusion made this spoof commercial to poke fun at people who know nothing about design yet still insist on raising their opinion about it...

What's with all this whining about 'dead space' and 'difficult to navigate'? Are you seriously suffering from the delusion that the current scheme is the opposite of difficult to navigate? The current scheme is for chumps, the only part I even use is the played games section because the rest of it is so impossible to deal with. This new scheme actually brings to the table things I'm interested in, so yeah, I'm waiting for it.
Oh and for the uninitiated, these were in planning before miis.

It actually looks counter-intuitive from a purely "ease of use" perspective. I don't really want a glamorous store. I bet very few people "shop around" on it, look at features/videos in store while they decide. That's what the internet is for.
People want to get in, grab the game they want and get out.

I was on the phone today with MS tech support for some post-red ring DRM cleanup. While waiting for a download to complete, I was speaking with the customer service rep who started talking about how they got to play around a little with the New Xbox Experience. Totally unprompted, this rep then threw out a tentative release date of Nov. 18th or 19th.

Avatars are cute and what not ( and I admit will be fun to play around with ) but this aspect of the new experience seems very cool to me. I'm a sucker for wisuals and it just feels more cinematic.
