Sarah Palin, in Video Games
Posted by Owen Good at 9:00 AM on October 6, 2008
All you guys told me STFU this morning and post about video games, not politics. Well, suck it. Pwn or Die has a half-dozen shoops of everyone's favourite fappable vice presidential candidate, and I must say, the Samus costume is quite fetching. But good God, she looks like a dude -- Rudy Giuliani with a wig, actually -- in that lollipop GTA IV rendering. Guys if you're gonna do it, do it right, Palin never steps foot in public without her indestructible updo. The full gallery is on the jump.
UPDATE: Reader Nick R. supplies box art for Cabela's Alaskan Adventures: Sarah Palin Edition. Is this a retail box drop or DLC for a 2-year-old title? Oh. God, I'm tempted to tag this post rumour just for the hell of it.
What if Sarah Palin was in ... [Pwn or Die]

The GTA one was awesomely hilarious. No joke.
Now we just need an equally inflammatory gallery of images: "What if Barack Obama was in..."
And this gallery would display Obama's head photoshopped onto any number of middle eastern or african baddies from video games getting smoked, or blowing away soldiers. Yeah, that would be cool.

@Sam_Lowry: Oh, for the love of...
Look, if you honestly want to call Obama a Socialist, all you're really doing is betraying your complete lack of perspective. Obama is, by the standards of the REST OF THE CIVILIZED WORLD, center-right at BEST. Just because the American political spectrum has careened wildly into crazy right-wing territory over the past couple of decades does not mean that you get to simply redefine terms and make up what they mean.
Summary: "Social programs" and "Socialism" are not the same thing, despite both having "social" in them. If that's really the only requirement, I suggest you take a good look at those "social networking" sites like MySpace. Clearly, they're secretly planning a -workers' uprising-!

Kotaku, I second minus_273's idea...we really NEED an option to block certain editor's posts. I come to Kotaku to read about games and the industry...not some idiot's desperate try to link politics to games.
Until then, I believe Owen Good has no place on Kotaku...as proven by this pathetic so-called article on here that purposefully goes out of its way to insult the readership of this site. Please give us, your readers, a way so that we can block his pandering drivel. Thank you.

It's okay to be a shovenist pig under the guise of anonymity(Hell, I do it too), but that's something I'd probably choose to keep to myself, even if I WAS writing for a publication that's fairly laid back in terms of censorship. Just a quick question, how many people come to this site expecting up to date news that's totally accurate and reads like a Fox News article? Or how many people come to this blog to keep up on gaming news and gain exclusives and read articles written by editors with a personality? What the fuck has gone wrong when a simple news post like this can get so many people riled up? It annoys the hell out of me that you think because you don't agree with what he said on a public domain, that you're the censorship kings of the internet? Guess what -- you're not. Everyone's said it before but SERIOUSLY, I beg all of you -- if you don't like what you're reading, then STOP. Don't continue reading and getting even more pissed off, because then all you do is post comments that piss people like me off. In before the "but you didn't have to read the comments" -- that's shit, I did. I enjoyed the story and decided to read the comments from people who I thought were mature enough to keep their mouth shut, all because a vice president was photoshopped? All because Owen used a bit of language or decided to post something that doesn't float your boat?
Sorry, I've wanted to say something like this for a long time, and most of it probably doesn't make sense, just gets me so angry when everybody else seems to think they know whats best for me.

@Graywind: It'll take a second or two of your oh-so-precious time to read the title and see the image to decide if you were going to click it or move onto the next. Maybe a few more seconds to breeze through some of the text, and decide if you are interested or not. So, you clicked it, for some reason, probably read the whole article and saw all of the images, and decided what it was not good for the internet.
Wrong. Quite a few people enjoyed it, and thus you fail. Not only that, but I fail to see your point in the "insulting of the readership of this site" - Kotaku being a site that frequently shows tits whenever it's even the slightest gaming related, or shows one of the thousands of versions of the Hare Hare Dance. Kotaku is not a site 100% dedicated to videogames, let me remind you. This is what makes Kotaku different from other blogs and a whole lot more fucking awesome, IMHO.
If you got a problem with the editor, don't read Kotaku on weekends, as he and Maggie are the one's in charge of running the whole thing. You can just filter it to show Maggie's posts. If you have a problem with the site, go and make your own, or go to another dedicated "gaming" blog - there's tons of them out there.

From CBS News, Oct. 6, 2006: "I'm thinking of suing George Bush and Dick Cheney for making the remake of 'Brazil' without my approval," he told a New York screening audience this week. "Their version isn't as funny, though." The 65-year-old native of Minnesota who emigrated to England in the 1960s and helped form the legendary comedy group Monty Python, held dual citizenship for three decades. (He married a British citizen and has three children.) This past year, though, he renounced his U.S. citizenship. The ethics investigation you speak of is doomed to failure. Simply put, the investigation would need to find that in her heart of hearts she fired a state employee for reason X instead of reason Y. There is no way to prove that so the investigation is likely going to find nothing. As for blocking it, when the lead investigator goes on the record supporting Palins political adversary and claims the results of the investigation will be an October surprise, the objectivity of the investigation has to be called into question. So frankly I don't care if they're trying to push it back.
I'm going to be frank, by in large I'm anti-abortion. I'm sorry but no matter how I look at it, it comes across to me as preemptive murder. I can see why people wouldn't see it that way, but I have a right to have my own moral belief set and to vote based on it.
Actually Wasilla already had a fair amount of debt when she went into office. Yes the debt grew but the cities population grew significantly during her terms and the cities infrastructure had to be expanded dramatically.
Being an former resident of Alaska, I understand the practice of shooting wolves from helicopters and begrudgingly support it. Suffice to say that in some regions of the state, when the population of game animals decline, people die. I love wolves, but I love people more, so I can understand the practice as a means to control population.

Let's be honest about abortion, it isn't about babies, it's about women. Through out history women have found ways to get rid of children they cannot keep for whatever reason. The only thing the anti-abortion movement will accomplish if they win, will be shutting down safe facilitices for these procedures to happen in. They won't stop abortion, it'll just move back into back alleies with coat hangers weilded by some one looking for a quick buck.
A town that size has no business having that much debt. I live in a town of 90,000 and we don't have 22 million in debt. It's called responcible spending.
When animal populations decline, it isn't the fault of the wolves. They are eatting the weak and the sick. It's the people who are over hunting. Here where I live in Texas, we don't have wolves any more, they've been hunted to exstinction. We do however have a massive over population of deer and hogs, to the point they are the health hazard. And you know what, we don't shoot them from helocopters. Furthermore, I saw the question that was put to a vote, and the court case for miss leading voters that followed. If she's was so sure her way would pass, she didn't need to go about it in such an ass backwards way.

@EmeraldDragon:
Saying abortion is about women and not babies is naive. The truth is that it's about both women and babies, the two are intrinsically linked and cannot possibly be separated. Now I feel I should note that I do support abortion if going through with a birth will put both the life of the child and mother at stake but I do not support a person being able to abort a life because of sheer convenience.
Trust me, I've looked at this little, "ethics investigation," a number of different ways, and there's nothing to it. Even the person that was fired has come out and said that he was never put under any pressure to fire the trooper in question. On the other hand Palin and her staff contend that he was fired because he was seeking more federal funds for investigations than she approved of, there's a very clear e-mail trail going back and forth between the two parties arguing about this, so it's highly likely that this was indeed the reason for the firing.
Public Safety Commissioners in almost every state serve at the behest of the governer, and the governer has extremly broad rights to dismiss them. The only way this could be an ethics violation would be to determine that everybody is lying and in her heart of hearts she fired this guy for personal reasons.
There's no way to prove that, so the entire investigation is likely nothing more than an exercise in due process. Unfortunately it's become highly politicized since late August however, and I don't blame the McCain Palin team trying to shut it down.
Of the debt in Wasilla, which is actually a town of 10K not 5K, 15 Million went to a sports center designed to service both Wasilla and the surrounding communities. That might sound like a huge luxury but keep in mind that winters in Alaska last up to nine months long. Sports centers such as these are quite common that far north and towns without them tend to have large drug problems. By in large that makes it a justifiable expense for the 4th largest city in the state of Alaska.
Wait, so you're a biologist too, could have fooled me. It's stupid to say that wolves only go after the sick and the weak. Or rather I should say that after nine months of winter almost all game animals are sick and weak. During blizzards in Alaska game animals die out so quickly that it's not uncommon for wolves to come out of the mountains and eat house pets. I've literally stood by and watched as a pack of wolves unsuccessfully attacked my cousins Husky when I was about ten.
Again, I like wolves, I'm a blasted furry for crying out loud. However I like people more and there are many isolated villages and poor families in Alaska that rely on game meat to get them through the winter.
Yes I can see why you might think that people are to blame for declining animal populations but Alaska isn't Texas, it's several times larger, far less developed and has far fewer people. If the winters were normal and there were no wolves you wouldn't be able to kill Caribou fast enough. As it stands, the combined pressure of wolves, winter, and hunting is often too much and since we can't do anything about the winter we either have to choose between wolves or people.
Tough decision, but Alaska is a state where you have to make tough decisions constantly.

@WolvenOne: I'm neither pro-life nor do I advocate abortion, but I don't believe it is as black and white as people want to make it. Hell, I'm all for full hystorectomies for anyone who's had more then one (with exception). If you don't want kids, then use proper birth control (and not that abstanince only crap either).
We aren't going to agree on the investigation, so I'll by pass it.
As for the sports center, I can't say I know much about cold. I probably haven't seen six inches of snow collectively in my entire life. But I do know about heat. We hit triple digits starting starting in late May and usually don't see anything in the 90s until September. Death through heat stroke is common, but all our sports a still played outside, usually in the height of summer. Playing football, in heavy padding, in the cold actually sounds refreshing all things considered.
Here's the thing though, Alaska's own biologists are saying it's the trolphy hunters causing the problems. You don't even need a basic degree in biology to under stand it.
Trolphy hunters take the biggest fittest bucks to mount on their walls, this leaves room for weaker less fit animals to pass on their genes to the next generation. Winter comes and these weak geneed animals die off, as is the principle of Darwinism. But because the weaker animals are the one breeding, the whole population is weaken as a result, and thus more animals dying off.
Animals survived billions of years without human intervention, despite winter and predation, if we stopped trying to "fix" things, they'd turn out just fine.
And on a side note, several countries in Africa decided it was a good idea of cull a bunch of Elephants because they felt the population was too large and they would eat all of the people's food. But they did not kill the babies. The result was a bunch of young bull elephants who did not know how to behave as elephants rampaging across the country side. Yay for the laws of unintended consiquinces.

As you've said, you know nothing about cold. I've seen trees explode from the cold, and have seen buckets full of frozen anti-freeze. In the coldest months of the Alaskan winter unprotected flesh can become frost-bitten in the shortest periods of time. Schools keep their recesses short, about ten to fifteen minutes, specifically because any longer outside would be dangerous.
You cannot compare warmth to cold. In the warmest regions of earth life thrives, while in the coldest regions it hangs on for dear life.
As a child I spent scant time outside even when claustrophobia was driving me nuts. We even converted our garage into a small basketball court at one point just to alleviate the closed in feeling.
As for the assertion that trophy hunters are to blame, well I'm sorry but that's just a load of crap. As I've said before, Alaska is huge, there are regions where hunters cannot even access without being airdropped in. There are nowhere near enough hunters to affect population in those areas, yet game animals still periodically drop.
Why, why, because it becomes freaking cold in the winter months and animals drop like flies.
This isn't new either, the natives of Alaska have plenty of stories about winters where all the animals disappeared and they only go through it by the skin of their teeth. Alaska is an extreme environment where life simply struggles. This is the normal state of things for Alaska and has been for thousands of years, unfortunately we need to bend things a little to make things a little more friendly for human life because people die otherwise.
I'm sorry but I get extremly ticked off when armchair intellectuals a half a world a way try to manage or cast judgments on the affairs of a people who are struggling with their circumstances daily.
As a former Alaskan I can definitively say that most Alaskans just want everyone to leave them the heck alone so they can manage their affairs properly.

As for the people living in these remote areas, it may seem callus, but I have no sympathy for them. They have chosen their way of life and must live with the consequences of those decision. Likewise, I think anyone living in a Hurricane zone who flatly refuses to build a Hurricane house, forfits their right to complain when their houses get destroyed.
Life cycles, some years will be harder then others, and those not willing to adapt and prepare for those years, need not live so far from civilization. They bshould not be blaming wolves (or any other better equipt preditor) for their own inadequeces.

Great, good for them, but you should really know your history. Wolves are notoriously difficult to hunt, especially in heavily wooded areas. They're fast, can move very quietly, and generally don't like to be seen by people. When wolves were largely eliminated from the lower 48 in the early 20th century trappers made heavy use of poisons that were incredibly devastating to the environment, so ironically hunting them by helicopter is the more environmentally friendly alternative.
And how do you consider this coddling? People don't eat, they die. What exactly are they supposed to do, wave their hands and magically will food to appear?
I'm sorry but your statement reeks of naivete.
Oh, and quick FYI, Alaska isn't a very good climate for farming. the summers simply aren't long enough for most crops and the landscape is littered with rocks and permafrost. So no, isolated villages aren't going to be able to get through nine month long winters on a home grown vegetarian diet.

Look, wolves aren't endangered in Alaska and it should be clear to any reasonable person that their population needs to be controlled somehow. Regular hunting isn't effective and poison is environmentally unfriendly, doesn't exactly leave very many options.
Besides that, technically guns could be considered cheating too. So do you want to ban guns in Alaska and force people to stare down grizzlies with nothing but pocket knifes? Trust me, it's disconcerting enough when there's a gun right next to you.

@Killalaz: Uhh, ruination of the country? All she does is advise the president and be head of the Senate...which isn't too bad considering how many improvements and awesome things she did for Alaska.
Bias really blinds the crap out of people. None of the candidates are idiots unable of running a country. That's their career, politics. Give it a break. These people are no doubt probably smarter than any of you.

@SantayaniAristaeus: You're completely correct. This is terribly immature.
