Eidos Reveal Exclusive 360 Tomb Raider: Underworld DLC
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 1:50 AM on October 7, 2008
by Lesley Smith
Lara's latest tomb-raiding adventure will be expanded with the release of two sets of DLC exclusive to the Xbox 360, Eidos today announced. Tomb Raider: Underworld sees the lovely Lady Croft visiting Mexico, Thailand and the Mediterranean as well as getting to gripes with Norse mythology on her search for Thor's Hammer.
The first - Beneath the Ashes - will hit Xbox Marketplace towards the end of December and continue Lara's adventures after the main storyline of Underworld has finished. Featuring a new and exclusive area, players will be able to kill new enemies as well as uncover even more secrets.
The second pack with the even more mysterious moniker of Lara's Shadow will be released in early 2009 and expand gameplay even more by introducing a new playable character. Lara's Shadow .... Lara's Shadow .... Hmm who could the new character be?

I'm not usually a DLC hater, but if you have DLC slated for release approximately 1 month after the retail game hits shelves then you, sir, are an ass. Here's a tip, at least try to pretend you aren't gouging people... push off the DLC until February and people will just assume you created it post-release.
Good grief.

I really hate this trend. I was actually considering trying to fit this into my budget will all this games coming out but all I have is a PS3/PC so I'm going to hold off on this for now.
But this trend of exclusive DLC needs to stop. If the game is multiplat they should make the same content available at the same time for all consoles. Especially in this case if it continues the main story which means all other owners get an unfinished product story-wise.

Awesome. Good to hear there will be more for us to explore. Ever since TR: Legends, I've fell in love with the Tomb Raider series again. TR 1 and 2 were good, but 3 was the downfall, up until legends.
I wish more games would announce DLC in the future to keep you interested in the game longer, I think it's a great selling point.

It's becoming more and more evident that we've moved on from console-exclusive games to console-exclusive downloadable content for games.
And I like that. I never liked the idea of someone not getting to play a game I really love just because they own the "wrong" console. With this method, we all get to play everything, but we also get little perks.

Welcome to the new exclusivity deals of the 21st century. This is how MS will continue to "win" in terms of content as they'll strike deals (i.e. pay millions of dollars) to get exclusive DLC to force gamers to buy the game on the 360 even if someone has both systems.
Smart move for MS and, again, the way most third-party games will go from now on. I guess we'll see if Sony makes the same move turning third-party games into bidding wars or if they'll continue to bring fresh IPs to the market and rely more on exclusive first-party titles. Biased or not Sony has a much better line-up in first-party titles for at least the next 12 months. Except for when FFXIII comes out. That'll set them back at least from a psychological point of view.
With exclusive DLC and FFXIII coming to the 360 the idea that buying a PS3 will seem useless.
Having said all of that we'll have to see what kind of impact LBP will have on the market. It could overshadow everything since you'll be able to (seemingly) create almost every game coming to the market albeit with cute little sack people.

OMG! PLANT!
Seriously though, I totally hear you and I usually AM you in this type of discussion. I have no issue with DLC, I frequently buy map packs and mission packs and obviously songs for Rock Band.
I have no issue with it if I can envision it being something on the drawing board that just didn't make it to release. "Hey wouldn't it be sweet if we did X?" "Yeah, it is too late to add that now, let's pencil it in for DLC."
Then I imagine the game ships, people take a few days off, then come back and start adding content. Totally cool and fantastic and please, keep doing this.
But this game ships on November 21st. They are talking about releasing DLC before Christmas. This means that content is being developed simultaneously with the retail game. I can't imagine it would need any further development after the actual game ships.
This makes it clear that they aren't just trying to flesh out their game with more content, they are trying to increase the cost of the game (already $10 higher on the 360) behind the scenes.
This is as close as you can get to making people pay for content already on the disc. So where is the line? If they release content a day after the game ships will that be acceptable too?
The bitch of it is, if it's good content I'll probably still buy it. It still really cheeses me off. How far will this type of thing go?

This exclusive DLC BS needs to stop. First of all, the concept of DLC is just greed, and making money for something that should be packaged within the game. Second of all, enough of buying exclusive DLC rights, to try to win an edge. Not only are the buyers of the PS3/Wii version being shafted, but it is monopolistic behavior to win an edge. Let the market dictate fairly the outcome of the console wars.

@Archaotic: Actually it doesnt seem that this is something that was cut from the disc just for DLC exclusive. Every game has stuff thats cut because it doesnt fit. Its quite possible that this DLC stuff was good enough to keep around, but not good enough to fit into the story.
I will agree DLC exclusives are a slap in the face though. I'm not buying an X360 or PS3 because of some DLC.

I hate it when games have features clearly cut out in order to be packaged and sold as DLC later, and given the timing of these DLC releases, at least some of them were likely already planned to ship on the retail disc. It's even worse when the DLC is exclusive, because then it just feels like a spiteful, dick move.
A dick move that's going to discourage sales. Smart move, Eidos.

People - stop bitching about how "DLC is content that was purposely cut from the disc." So what if it is? Video game companies are in the business of making money (just like every business in the world), if they don't make money, we don't get games. The more money they make, the more games we get. End of story. DLC is here to stay, its an easy way for a company to make a few extra bucks without having to spend a ton on making a new game. If you don't like the idea of DLC, don't buy it. I'm getting tired of people posting about this whole issue, you're all just coming off as incredibly whiny - complaining here is not solving anything.

Considering I have no interest in Mirror's Edge aside from "huh, those trailers look pretty" (I get motion sickness from high-speed movement and thus won't be buying the game) I wasn't following that story much. But doing some back-checking, EA has stated that all platforms will still be getting DLC, tailored for the specific systems.
This is more in the GTA4 "WE GET DLC AND NOBODY ELSE DOES" vein, which makes it more of a dick move than "everybody gets DLC, it's just different for each system".

Yikes, I don't see how a company could do this. If you're going to have exclusive DLC why not make the game exclusive to the 360? It's like they want fans of both systems to buy their games but punish those who get the "wrong" version. How does that go over with consumers? Especially with a game like Tomb Raider which ,as far as I can tell, has a dwindling fanbase.

To me, the controls for TR were a lot more of a pain and your jumping had to be perfect, but they may have changed that in their more recent games.
I loved Uncharted, but I can see that the exclusive DLC will sway a 360 purchase...oh well. It seems to me like developers are just using this to make extra money for stuff that should have been in the game in the first place. @Archaotic: In any case, it could be because the 360 has been good to Eidos and the TR franchise- (360 was the showcase platform for Legend/Anniversary, TR:A available on the marketplace and integrated into 360 TR:L, and probably more than a few theme/gamerpic downloads). I'm pretty sure the TR games on the 360 were decent successes, maybe enough of a success that Eidos feels the 360 is the franchise's main platform now. Games sell better on the 360, maybe that's all there is to it. Or maybe MS paid for it. Maybe the game is so good, it's going to be a huge hit and MS knows it. I guess it's possible.

They're thinking that the 360-exclusive DLC, which you can be damn sure Microsoft will be advertising out the wazoo as the game's release approaches, will deter people from buying the non-360 versions of the game and prompt multiplatform owners to buy the 360 version, thus skewing sales numbers in their favor and making it look like the 360 version is the "definitive" one to buy.

I don't understand the problem a lot of people have with DLC coming out shortly after the game is released. Maybe the developer or publisher had DLC in mind while it was making the game, but that doesn't mean that they withheld it.
Let's say I'm at a restaurant. I order my entree and eat it. It was tasty. When I'm finished, the waitress/ waiter walks up and says "Would you like some dessert?"
I don't bite their head off and say "Why didn't you make my @#$#ing sandwich bigger." I don't say "You could have dumped that apple pie on top of my Monte Cristo." If I want the dessert, I'll pay for it. If I don't want it, I don't buy it.
Either way, the fact that I have a choice is good. There are enough resources available fo you to find out if a game is long enough to be worth your hard-earned loot. If the game isn't worth $60, then wait a little while. Or rent it. Or just don't buy it.
The same goes for DLC. It's only a rip-off if the DLC is required to play. Otherwise it's a choice.

I like this concept and I will probably buy it.
Now what I don't understand is why people assume this is a method to con the consummer. Sure it could be but it is also in the same vein as Limited Editions for games, or bonud Dvd content for movies (deleted scenes for instance, but also alternate endings).
Just because they are selling this DLC doesn't mean it would have been made on the disc if DLC didn't exist.
You probably would have gotten the same game 5 years ago as what you are getting today, except now you have the OPTION of buying an extra level if you WANT to do so.
It is an OPTION!
If the game is too short, the reviews will say so and DLC will not save the game.
If the game is good however, then DLC just gives you an option of playing the game more.
People bitch for games like GTA 4 where the DLC is made after the game has shipped, and they bitch when the DLC is made while the game ships. What would make you happy????

I wish people stopped trading games in and also stopped pre-ordering games.
it really messes up the game industry. (from the dev side)
please make it stop.

yeah i know it wasnt exclusive, in fact i beta tested the saturn version.
but sega as a console is dead (dreamcast is still awesome) ps kept the series going/killing. then it was ps2/xbox that bought it back with legend and anniversary. if it wasnt for the 2 recent games none of us would want to play underground....but im sure ms paid alot for those chapters....

Yea, this is a deterrent to trading it in, but this also serves the same function as an expanion pack on the PC...it's just much easier to do it digitally on the consoles.
And you're kidding if you don't think expansion packs for PC games aren't already being worked on by the time the game ships out the door... same concept here.

@metallicorphan: What makes you say it isn't carrying on? Everything I've seen, especially the UK trailer 3, certainly seems like they ARE. I'd be really surprised if they didn't, considering how in one trailer, almost all they do is talk about Avalon, and wondering how Thor's Hammer is related to Avalon.

@slothboy: You DO realize that not everyone on a game team works the same amount of time on a game, right? It's perfectly possible that some portion of the team finished their work on the main game long before the game had finished development and got started working on the DLC content while the rest of the team finished up their tasks on the main game.
Just because DLC is released after the game doesn't mean they have to wait until the game is out to start work on it, and just because the release is so close doesn't mean that the game could have shipped with the extra content...who knows what kind of issues would have come up trying to shoehorn it into the main game?

@Archaotic: And how could you possibly know it could have shipped with the game? For all we know, trying to rush the content and putting it onto the disc could have caused the entire thing to be delayed for who knows how long. And maybe Massiah's right. Maybe it just doesn't mesh well with the rest of the story...good enough to stand on its own as a side story, but out of place when forced to sit with the rest of the game.

@bialia: Maybe the content would not exist in the first place, because the game has to be complete on other platforms.
Maybe it pushes back their next game few weeks/months, but it may help Eidos to survive long enough to be able to release the next game.

Well, I probably would've bought this game for PS3. Now I'll probably only rent it just to spite Eidos and Microsoft.
I don't understand why Microsoft would pay asstons of money for stuff like this. It's not like I'm going to break down and buy a 360 just so I can spend even more money on DLC.

Of course I understand that, the thing that I keep coming back to is where consumers will ultimately draw the line on what can be considered premium extra content.
"Here is your copy of Tomb Raider: Banana Hammock. Go online now to purchase the last level of the game! Xbox 360 Exclusive!"
Game companies need to be careful with how they market their add-ons. As I have reiterated, I look forward to DLC for many games, I just need to feel like I'm not being taken for a ride. The quality of the content needs to be consistent with the price, and the initial retail release needs to be complete enough in it's own right to warrant the original purchase price.
I feel like they are just asking for trouble by offering DLC before the game has even shipped. It is one thing to say "We plan on offering DLC after the game ships" and quite another to say "This is the DLC and this is when you can buy it." It is risky from a marketing standpoint.

@ShirtGuyDom: ...Except if anything its almost worse. Because now, you can shell out the full price for the game, and then be punished for not buying the "right version of the game". Exclusive DLC can mean that you'll get the base game...but you won't get that extra bit of story you'll need to make the next game make sense or be more enjoyable, and most players won't even know about the exclusive DLC until after they've bought their copy, and they're left wondering why their buddies with a different system have some extra stuff. At least with exclusive games you're not forking out money to be left out in the cold.

ps3 owners are pissed at the lost content, so most will wait to see if they're ever going to receive it, some will rent the game out of spite, some will buy the game no matter what. ms made the sales of the game less on the competitor's console, so developers will be more inclined to develop and promote their x360 games more than their ps3 games, and sony loses more and more titles which will lead them to lose more money on the ps3, and by the time the ps4 and x720 arrives ms can release its system 1 year earlier once more (unlike sony which can piss off alot of loyal customers if they shorten the ps3's life cycle), and everyone will be sure this time around that there is no reason to wait for the ps4, since the most important thing is the titles, which microsoft has already secured during the x360 era.

The difference between this and dessert is that they are claiming it continues the story of the game. Dessert is never part of a meal that one should feel an omission should they choose to skip it.
AND, if it does continue the story, then it should be included, or be available for ALL platforms that can support DLC. (PC & PS3)

I have determined that Sony's marketing department has devoted most their time, energy, and resources into figuring out how to challenge the Chinese to a game of Red Rover that will span the length of the Great Wall. Seriously, how else can you explain the exodus of exclusive titles from the PS3? How else do you explain the fucking creepy ads? (Please send me the link of a good PS3 ad, because I have yet to see one) How else do you explain the lack of price cuts, the lack of exclusive DLC, and the general boneheadedness of Sony? I mean, Rumble= last gen what? I know that this has been harped on since the PS3 was first unveiled, but Sony has no idea what to do. They took everything good about the PS2 (low production cost, simplicity, ease to program for, limiting multimedia functions to those that are actually wanted i.e. DVD) and threw it in a bin. They failed to court developers, assuming that due to their success with the PS2 they would be treated like royalty. Clearly, reality has not followed that model. You want to know the ridiculous part: I have a PS3 and fucking love it! I just wish that they would figure out what they are doing with the thing, because I am 1 price cut/sale away from adding a 360 to my basement (damn those are getting cheap).

Unfortunately, this looks like the legacy Microsoft will be leaving the gaming world. Nickel and diming gamers for stuff which should be free: XBox live, horse armor for Oblivion, GTA4 DLC (a reliable console ... oops). Consumers should send a message to these companies and boycott this type of behaviour.

@Slothboy: Now you're just making a bunch of assumptions. Who says the game won't be "complete enough in it's own right"? Just because they planned for DLC and will have it ready soon after the game releases doesn't mean they half-assed the game or intentionally cut something out.
As it's been stated, it seems like Eidos is trying to keep the player's interest to keep them from trading the game back too quickly which is why the DLC seems to be timed the way it is. From a business standpoint, it sounds like a smart move. Fewer games traded to Gamespot, fewer used game sales will occur (for a short time, at least). Only Sony/Nintendo fanboys and people overthinking the issue will see it as a serious negative...everyone else will simply see it as extra content that they can get if they want.

i played TR as well and liked it, but the problem is that like the other iconic figures (sonic, crash, even dark cloud or klonoa) that experience you speak of leaves, as with almost any iconic figure i can think of (save for maybe conker) wanting to relive it is just like all the people that get excited for a new sonic game only to be disappointed when they find out it sucks...

@SudakshimaKristi: I own both the Ps3 and the 360 and i recommend you to do the same, those two are way different experiences and the two are awesome as hell. I can see what you mean, but i really think Sony has started to fix the mistakes it did and in a really good way. The 1st party games and the services the PS3 is spawning are something i´ll take over lame exclusive DLC (like this one) any day; It doesn´t matter who ends up winning this gen, i´m really convinced that the console that´ll end up like the most innovative and creative one will be the PS3 and i can guarantee you´ll be a very happy ps3 owner when that happens...

This is ridiculous. I cant believe this. these extra levels are a part of underworld. They should be released on the disk with the rest of the game. Not only are they releasing an incomplete game to the public but they are selling what should be included on every disk to a small percentage of the market. Underworld just went from a purchase to a rental. I knew I'd finish it quick but I wanted a copy, not anymore. Tomb Raider TLR (4) had 42 levels. legend had 6 (i think) this series has decided to ditch the exploration of interesting expansive areas for cheap money from costume changes and DLC that probably wont even bring the level count to half that of some of the old games.
