MadWorld Still Not Playable (in the US, at least)
Posted by AJ Glasser at 3:40 PM on October 7, 2008
Sega is going to sit on this game 'til it hatches. We've seen screen shots, we have videos; and if anyone can give me an accurate count of times "black and white and red all over" has been used to describe MadWorld, I'll send you a cookie.
But nobody besides PR reps is allowed to touch the freaking game. Lucky for me, I know one of these PR reps - Mabel Chung gave me my second job as a tester at Sega way back in the day. She might not cut me any breaks with the no-hands-on rule, but she will give me a reasonable explanation (which you have to click the jump to hear):
"They haven't really gotten the motion controls down yet," Mabel says. Sega doesn't want people to get attached before they finalise the controls; otherwise sassy journalists like me are liable to start kicking around worlds like "unintuitive" and "flailing."
It didn't look to me like Mabel was doing too much flailing as she took me on a guided tour of two different levels. The worst I saw was a part where she had to frantically drum with the Nunchuck and Wiimote to get in as many hits in as she could against one enemy for a point bonus. While doing that, she zipped through the whole spiel about the Death Watch plot and the logic behind killing people in as elaborate a way as you can to rack up points and progress to boss fights. "There's a story, too," she says. "But we don't want to give too much away."
Mabel's main concern is people are going to get bored of MadWorld before playing the game. Sure, it looks incredibly dynamic (not going to make a "black and white and red all over" joke, sorry); but with Sega sitting so firmly on all other relevant details (and on hands-on privileges), many potential fans are just going to write it off as a senseless violence fest.
And to some extent, that's the appeal. Mabel flung a guy into a cooling fan and then javelined somebody in the forehead with a sign post to trigger "Bloodbath" mode, which presented the Blood Press challenge. A giant spiked panel lowered from the ceiling and Mabel had only so many seconds to get as many people beneath it as she could before the panel smashed down, skewering all beneath in a wash of scarlet (Blood Press, get it?).
The point of all this, she tells me, is to rack up points so you can get through levels more quickly and see more of the world. There are five cities in the game and each city is made up of several areas (each one being its own level). The action-y ones are where you want to do the most exploring, so you can find all the neat ways to kill people (instead of boring ol' beat downs); and that second level she got around to showing me was a racing challenge.
At least, I think it was supposed to be racing. Our character was tearing down a highway on a boss-looking motorcycle, dodging barrels and debris that seemed to come from nowhere.
"[This level] isn't finished, yet. There'll be enemies here that you also have to kill... but it's different, because you have to run them over." Mabel came to the end of the level where a tornado-making boss sprung a couple of cyclones at her and I had to step aside to let some other journo get a turn.
Mable waved goodbye with the Wiimote and I noticed her character seemed to spontaneously punch the nearest enemy.
Hm. Maybe there's hope for those motion controls, yet. And maybe, just maybe, the guys at TGS will get their hands on this game...

The attention this game is getting is simply a sign of how god awful wii software is.
The black and white monochrome environment must have been one of the easiest and laziest design decisions they could have possibly made.
If the hyper-gore is the only reason anyone cares, then why not just play gears of war instead?

As gorgeous as this game looks, the just huge amount of violence disturbs me at some level.
Maybe I'm just getting old...

If this holds up under a the weight of a few reviews then its a definite buy for me.

Mad world looks like its going to be difficult to play. At least from the screenshots anyway. Like difficult to differentiate from stuff, kinda like a virtual boy game.
Whoa, anyone notice that Facebook users will soon be able to comment on Kotaku (or Gawker in general)
Man that kinda means Kotaku is gonna get slammed with comments... the commenting system is already kind of unruly as it is.

I've got faith in Platinum "formerly known as Clover Studio" Games, so as long as they get as much time as they need to work on the game I'm confident it'll turn-out great.

Still looks like its going to be mindless fun, which is what we've been missing this generation on consoles. The last "fun for the hell of it" game I played was Earth Defense Force 2017.

@Defoliantonthemoneytree: I think what I'm trying to say is, I'm tired of the same-old-same-old. Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, everything is the same rehash of the same tired formula. How can you honestly "poo-poo" something as original as this? Games like Gears will always be there, but risky projects like this are uncommon and far between.

@Defoliantonthemoneytree:
The way it's been done is surprisingly effective, and no doubt nowhere near as easy or lazy as you claim. A lot of Wii games just use dull 3D objects with matte or gloss finishes. The devs on madworld have obviously spent time making loads of custom textures to give it that drawn, gritty feel.
And since when has the technical difficulty of an environment made gameplay good?

@Wolfers: Madworld doesn't use violence like Mortal Kombat does.. the game ridiculizes violence, it takes it to an absurd level, it's supposed to be funny. Have you checked the trailer with narrators? That gives you a better idea of what the game is trying to be.

@Wolfers: I'm with you on this one. Not a thing appeals to me in all of the trailers I've seen. The only thing I can think of is that the people screaming for joy are the kids that are actually 13 and loving excessive violence. I still cannot figure out why this is getting so much press.

@Defoliantonthemoneytree: It's actually a rather large challenge to make something in black and white, yet still make it somewhat visually appealing and coherent, which is, in my opinion, what's been done with MadWorld. Just because it's in a monochromatic style doesn't mean it's lazy work. It's an entirely different challenge.
And from what I've seen, people are looking forward to this because it's a mature title for the Wii that actually looks entertaining, not the gore. I honestly could care less about the gore. I'm just happy to have a new game that I'll enjoy.

I thought No More Heroes was going to be all gore, but my favorite parts of the game were the personality of all the boss characters. Each boss battle was memorable. It had a Kill Bill vibe going on.
I like the art direction and violence of MadWorld, but the amount of gore is questionable. Simply killing people in varous ways gets old very quickly. It's still one of the Wii games I'm keeping an eye on... if only because there's not much on the Wii to keep an eye on.

For those wondering, "the big deal" about MW that's making it get hyped, besides having a cool style and looking real fun, is that it's, at long last, an ugly Wii game. Ugly as in our grandmas and non gaming family won't end up liking it more than we do.
This game has a face only a real gamer could love, something we've been needing on the Wii.
