The Conduit - Still Going Strong
Posted by AJ Glasser at 5:00 PM on October 7, 2008
Last time we checked in with High Voltage at PAX, they had only just gotten their hands on Wii MotionPlus. So I wasn't too surprised to see that there really wasn't much being done with it at the Nintendo Media Summit - but my proverbial socks were knocked off when I saw how much they'd done with the graphics in that short amount of time.
Less than two builds later, The Conduit looks worlds better. All of the graphics have been smoothed over thanks to new detail mapping, which also gets rid of those pesky blurring textures on walls and stuff. The lighting and colours have been tweaked so that a real sense of atmosphere comes through as you play. And we can finally see what the All Seeing Eye tool is supposed to do when you use it to search for hidden passages and enemies; something I didn't get to try during my last whirlwind tour of the Wii FPS.
I started this demo somewhere underneath one of the government buildings in Washington (maybe the Pentagon). The long, dark corridors were moody and tense as orders were being given to me over an earpiece about where to go and who to shoot at. Gas-masked foes jumped out from behind crates and steel doorways, bringing on a rush of Time Crisis nostalgia as I gunned 'em down.
I had to stop and fiddle with the motion controls a bit (mostly just to slow the turning speed). It was every bit as responsive and in-depth as I remembered, letting me set up the control scheme nearly any way I could think of. (I have a sneaking suspicion that The Conduit it would have worked out fine even without MotionPlus).
A "soft" targeting reticule was added to this build and there's now an objective compass that tells you how far (and in which direction) your goal is. Facing a guy and holding down Z brings up a loose box around the enemy as well as a gauge that gives a rough estimate of his HP. Let go of Z and the reticule vanishes (that also seems to happen if the target gets too far out of range). So by "soft" reticule, High Voltage means you still have to work if you wanna shoot someone.
After finishing off or chasing away all of the gas mask guys, I came to what looked like a dead end and busted out the All Seeing Eye to look for a clue. I had to walk back along the corridor until I saw something flash on the wall and a yellow icon light up on screen. Using the All Seeing Eye, I triggered a secret lock that had me aligning semi-circles around an illuminati pyramid before a panel slid open to reveal a secret passage. At the end of the passage, a short cutscene showed one of the gas mask dudes getting disemboweled by an alien and then I was back to running through shadowy corridors, looking for more clues and more people to shoot.
Before, I compared this game to Turok. What I meant by that was, The Conduit evoked the marvelous feeling that Nintendo FPS games can hold their own against anything Sony comes up with (which I used to believe back when I was 13). I may be more jaded now (and a proud PS3 owner), but I honestly think when I look at The Conduit that I am looking at one of the best shooters anyone could ask for on any console.
Even better is the idea of multiplayer. No one's gotten a look at this yet, but we have heard that WiiSpeak is being incorporated into this part of the game. Even if it weren't, I'd still be stoked for multiplayer because if campaign mode is any indicator, The Conduit multiplayer stands to be the next GoldenEye. Which means two of my favourite N64 shooters will have been reenacted. Which means my wallet will be lighter. How about yours?

I can deal with that. I played TimeSplitters 3 on the PS2 and loved how it looked, so I've got no problem with this game looking like a PS2 game =P If it lives up to the Turok/Goldeneye thing that AJ likens it to, I will be very pleased.
I just hope friend codes aren't so heavily used in this game.. :/

That really is very high praise for the game; I hope this hasn't raised people's expectations so much that it only leaves room for disappointment.
I am keeping an open mind about this though, and pending reviews will probably pick this up.
Any clue as to what sort of online multi-player the game is going to include and whether MotionPlus will be included?

I'm cautiously optimistic about this game. I still have some reservations (looks a little too similar to Metroid for my liking, and I have concerns about how online multiplayer is gonna work), but in the Wii's desolate list of upcoming titles this game looks like a gem.

I honestly can't wait. The very first build of this game was kinda "meh" in my eyes, but each build gets better and better. My only complaint is that the AI looks fairly basic. You've had hands-on experience, what do you think of the AI?

OK, well, I have no problem with last-gen graphics in current-gen games on lesser hardware. The Wii is lesser hardware than the 360 or the PS3, so what? If the game looks good, it looks good. It doesn't need HDR and 1920x1080 resolution, it needs smart artists and developers/designers to make it look good and run well on the hardware given. I fail to see why so many people wank over graphics.

@Dragonis: The developers did say that the game (the PAX build anyway) was still in alpha stages. Though the game itself is technically complete, they're now going to polish the game up a fair bit while focusing on multiplayer.
This is one of the few Wii games I am most definitley looking forward to myself. I just hope that the game is successful in sales, then other third parties pick up on this game's success.

I hate how people are hating on the graphics saying they're ps2 graphics. This is probably the best looking wii game to date. Atleast pretty dang close. I've been following this game since it showed up on ign's livewire durring E3 when it first Wow'd the masses. March '09 cant come soon enough.

I'd say, so far, Resident Evil 4's graphics were more impressive than this.
But then again, you really can't tell with these tiny screen shots, so I'm going to hold back my opinion until I play it, definitely getting this, looks pretty damn fun.

MP3 looked great to me, but I know that it was only because of the bloom lighting and haze that makes everything look frosty, smooth and in perspective.
This is impressive because it actually looks great without cutting corners. The problem is though: Metroid Prime 3 also looked amazing because the art direction was phenomenal. The Conduit is really lacking in that area.

You're saying that regardless of the quality of the AI, level design, audio, weapon balance, and how *fun* it ends up being, as long as the game uses the Wiimote correctly it will be more than great? There's a lot more to a game than its control scheme.

I'm really looking forward to this, the wii just needs one really good shooter to tip it over the edge to get more.
MP3 isn't really an FPS,COD was ok and the second MOH game had great controls but crappy single player.
I'm hoping that either this or timesplitters,(hopefully both,) are going to be the outstanding game that starts more FPS's coming to the wii.
Is this the same build as the IGN videos of the first level walkthrough?

This is a good deal above even Xbox graphics. Id compare it Halo3 like I said before. At the moment if they upped the AI Id say this might be better than Halo3 in terms of single player even without the novelty factor.
But they havent yet so Ill hold off on that.
The graphics are jumping up by leaps and bounds. They've kept the frame rate clean but they tend to get ambitious at times but if they clean it up is thould be fine. My current main complaint, in regards to graphics is that I think the aliens need a sharper look than the rounding theyve done to claws and whatnot.. it an art style complaint just because Id prefer the giant bug look more like an Akrid from Lost Planet. Also they do need some damage effects on the enemies if you're using lasers like a burning effect where their hit. Animations needs to be more fluid, it looks old school in animation but they need to aim for Halo3 at least in animiation and Im setting that as a benchmark just because its doable on the wii and something if they accomplish they should be able to compete with major 360 and PS3 FPS games.
In regards to shooters, Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 are reasons I want a PS3, Gears 2 is why I have a 360, Conduit could be the reason for the Wii.
Id prefer Jet Force Gemini but this will do.

@marmidukestank: Actually, I'm pretty sure Metroid Prime 3 looked great because it had all of that AND ran at a silky smooth 60fps, which very few games these days even get close to.
I swear to god, almost every game has some massive framerate problem and none of the developers ever bother to fix it or rework the situation to make it play smoothly. No, no, we've gotta have 1080p! Even if it's at 3fps!

@marmidukestank: Agreed. If there's one thing bad I can say about The Conduit, it's that it lacks art direction...then again, Metroid Prime series had such incredible art direction (Phendrana Drifts, oh my God), it almost feels like an unfair comparison, like putting Botticelli against a photo of Johnny Cash flipping people off.
I for one like the weapon designs, which (interesting shooting) is one of the two most important things in FPS design, the other being interesting things to shoot.

I only ask of one thing.
Do
Not
Suck
I'm effin' serious. DO NOT SUCK. So far, de Blob has risen my hopes for 3rd party developers on the Wii. I do NOT need The Conduit to bring that back down. (Same goes to you, Madworld).
Right now my main worries is the AI. They look... static and stupid. I'm just assuming that it's because the game isn't finished yet, but it still worries me.
...and if this game DOESN'T suck, you people better buy it. Or mass beatings will commence. I kid you not.

I just hope it's fun and varied. Enough so that it's a good shooter even compared to games like Resistance, Gears of War, and Half Life. It has lots of potential and it seems like these people know what they're doing on the Wii, but they also have to know that Medal of Honor Heroes and Metroid Prime 3 aren't the only competitors.

and about the graphics whoring thing.. what i don't understand is, if they got the source engine to work on the original xbox
why aren't any wii games running in source? despite it not being as great as the pc or 360 when it came to running source, it still did a pretty damn good job
and half-life 2 still looks better than most of the games to date...

I don't like that you have to fiddle with the controls so much. Why don't they make it default to PC-sensitive? They're paying for it too. While IGN knew to change it, Play panned the game for bad controls.

@imikedaman: Well...no...I guess not "scratches head". What I meant was that I've been waiting for a game like this- a FPS that uses the Wiimote correctly- since well...since we were promise such things during the Wii launch. I still remember that long cold November night, where I waited 12 long hours for Wal-Mart to open in -34 degrees celcius weather so I could get my hands on the Wii and Red Steel...so far, I'm still waiting.
If the Wiimote is done correctly, I think everything else, especially the "fun" factor will fall into place.

@sugardeath: Don't get me wrong, I don't find graphics to be that important at all. And if I still had my Wii, I'd probably buy this game. But the fact is, those graphics aren't impressive... at all. In my eyes anyway. It's been a while since I played a Wii, but I'm sure Galaxy and Twilight Princess had better graphics than this... Again, I'm not usually fussed with graphics, I just don't like how they're pushing this as the Wii's most advanced graphics yet.

The graphics are clearly shaping up to be better than any last gen title.
People are just classing anything that doesn't look 360/PS3 quality as PS2 graphics.
Technically, it looks more impressive than any Xbox1 title ive seen. The only area this game is lacking in is art direction. Thats a shame, but as long as this runs at a smooth pace and the gameplay is there then this game is cool with me.

Really happy to hear that:
A) The game is fun and getting positive comments from everywhere
B) The guys weren't kidding when they said they wanted to make this game because they wanted to play the best Wii FPS that had never been made.
It's nice to see that they've got the talent to match their heart. Also, I really hope they do sell the engine to other 3rd parties so they can stop making nasty-looking games.
Anyone else getting a Perfect Dark vibe? (which I preferred over Goldeneye). Now give us a release date! Me wants it!

Reeeeeally? How on Earth can you gauge the quality of a game's multiplayer solely on the single player experience? The reason GoldenEye's multiplayer is still held in such high regard is because so many decent single player games stuff the player vs. player bit up.
