Gears of War 2 - The Non-Review Review
Posted by AJ Glasser at 3:00 AM on October 8, 2008
Gears of War 2 is a hard game for me to write about. Partly because (drum roll, please) I didn't play the first one and mostly because of all the restrictions placed on last week's three-day GOW2 marathon. I'm not really allowed to talk about campaign mode's "plot spoilers" and I can't talk about the glorious Horde mode multiplayer until October 15 (not sure if that includes co-op campaign mode).
So what can I talk about? I've got a handy-dandy list of weapons and vehicles, new screen shots and a few details about my experience with the game. To avoid embargo-breaking territory, you'll have to wait 'til at least Oct. 15 for my full impressions (since Horde mode and co-op made up most if it).
Hit the jump for a Gears of War 2 fix.
New or not, there's a buttload of content to this game. So much so that the PR rep handling the event couldn't even name all the different weapons, vehicles and enemy types off the bat. Instead, he sent out several word docs with lists and info blurbs and an admonishment not to print any of it in full.
So here's a castrated list of weapons:
* Boltok Pistol - A "high-calibre revolver." It's the future, right? Why do they still have revolvers?! This is a one-handed sidearm that (along with the Snub and Gorgon pistols) is the only weapon you can use while holding an enemy in front of you as a shield. I like pistol-whipping people with it.
* Boomer Shield - You get this one when you kill a Mauler and take its shield. I never found it in the game, but I'm told that it makes you way slower and you can only use your pistol with it. Lame.
* Boomshot Grenade Launcher - Another weapon you've got to take off a Locust. I heart this gun - it makes things go 'splode and produces baby cluster bombs. Alas, the range is limited and it takes forever to reload, so I had to ditch it almost as soon as I got it.
* Frag Grenade - Duh.
* Gnasher Shotgun - Yay! Shotgun! I carried this weapon the whole time and went out of my way to use it even when the game obviously wanted me to be using something else (feh, sniper rifles). It's only got eight rounds, though, so make 'em count!
* Gorgon Pistol - Never found it. I guess it's got a small clip and takes an abnormally long time to reload.
* Hammer of Dawn - This sounds pretty boss. "An Imulsion-powered satellite that rains down a devastating particle energy stream." Why didn't they just give me this weapon right from the start? Could've blown through campaign mode in, like, three hours.
* Hammerburst Assault Rifle - I didn't like this one as much as the Lancer. It might be more powerful and you can zoom and stuff, but I never seemed to hit what I was aiming at and the scoped view was useless thanks to the heavy kick.
* Lancer Assault Rifle - You know it. You love it. Use it.
* Longshot Sniper Rifle - Normally, I love sniper rifles, but I just wasn't into it in Gears. Maybe because I think of sniping as more suited to stealth games and Gears is anything but stealth.
* Mortar - Again, duh. Don't shoot it into the side of the wall in front of you.
* Mulcher - It's like a mini machine gun. You have to mash the Left Button to cool it down pretty much at the same time as you squeeze the right trigger, because this sucker overheated way too soon for my taste. Stupid point-and-spray tease...
* Poison Grenade - Never found it and I'm pretty sure it's a good thing I didn't. I probably would have stuck it to myself and wound up poisoned because - as I'm sure you can guess - I'm a wee bit incompetent with the shooters.
* Scorcher Flamethrower - I didn't find this one, but I watched freelancer Adam Pavlacka crisp the beejesus out of many a Locust in one level. He seemed to dig it. And I guess it blinds enemies - but really, you're not shooting this thing to blind them, you're shooting the burn them.
* Smoke Grenade - I'm sure you can imagine what this does.
* Snub Pistol - Arg. More pistols.
* Torque Bow - I saw this in action in multiplayer. The targeting reticule maps the arrow's trajectory, so it's easily one of the most accurate weapons in the game. But, we were playing on Horde mode, so I can't tell you how wrong that went. Yet.
* Troika Cannon - Duck. Fucking duck. And there's no point in using one because you've probably frag grenade'd all the Locusts standing near enough to use it just to stop that bastard from raining rapid fire death down on you.
"Gears of War 2" Vehicles
* APC - "Armored Personnel Carrier." I wouldn't have figured that out without the PR rep to tell me what it stood for. It reminds me of a Jawa sandcrawler - but with guns. Love to see the Sand People take on one of these...
* Assault Derrick - Another fuck off huge personnel carrier that deploys Grindlifts. They have sexy names like "Betty" (wait - that's my mom's name. Ew.) and they tend to run off cliffs easily. It has a bulletproof windshield, but shoot at it anyway. It'll help with that cliff problem.
* Centaur Tank - I don't think I got far enough in campaign to see one. Supposedly, it's "surprisingly maneuverable" despite its size and it can turn on a dime. Sounds like the perfect thing to run people over with.
* King Raven - The only helicopter in the game. I'm not sure if you actually get to pilot it - I do know you spend a lot of time in them. They make Black Hawks look like horse flies.
There you have it, kids. When that nasty embargo expires on the 15, I'll get into why I found this game fun. That's right - fun. And it didn't matter one bit that I a) don't like shooters and b) never played the first one.
I'll be buying Gears of War 2 when it comes out November 7.

I'm actually getting kind of used to AJ's info dumps on shooters, they're kinda like the reviews I imagine my wife would right. Only she'd use even more F bombs (she's scottish) and probably type in all the sound effects.

You're not missing much from Gears of War 1..Theres not much to it with single player..All you do is hide and shoot, hide and shoot. Honestly, the cooperative mode in Everything Or Nothing is more fun than Gears of War, because you actually do something different in every level, and not so reptitive.
But the Multiplayer in Gears is something i have only tried a bit, and seemed really fun. It seems more like a multi-player game rather than a single player game.

hmm, i never tried gears either, and from watching it, i couldnt tell if it looked fun or not. so, i passed up getting the first one used, I was planning on passing GEoW2 up for some other games this season since my money can only go so far, but after your qoute, i may have to reconsider this as one of my purchuses this season. It just seems people both into as well as totally new to the game/series cant stop praising it.

The mini-machine gun might be amusing. If you have to keep cooling it down, it better be powerful enough to be worth the effort. I just remember like the one troika in the original multiplayer could chop down people easily enough, except it was impossible to get people to stay in the open enough.

Ahh, I'm glad that I know before hand that they didn't play the first, otherwise I might have had to /facepalm at some of the weapon descriptions/opinions.
Just as an FYI AJ, the Hammerburst is best used for a quick slap 'n drop tactic. It has a melee attack which the Lancer lacks (other then the saw, which isn't as useful in the first game as you might think) and when used in the right combo (most often by smacking them with a melee, then one burst from the gun) will drop the enemy so fast you'll get called a glitcher.

Sure not everyone played GoW 1 but why would you write a preview for the sequel from the perspective of someone who never played the series before? Its just a waste. Nevermind that this article didnt supply any information that gamers didnt already know.

A couple other facts that weren't mentioned in the list that could have been:
The smoke grenades now stun you and throw you around like a ragdoll when they hit you.
You can now get headshots with the torque bow. If you shoot them in the head, their head will get stuck to the nearest wall and explode within a few seconds.
The shotgun fires slower than it did it in first Gears.
They have also nerfed the sniper rifles, no more active downs, but to balance it an active reload makes you reload much faster.
The active reload for the flamethrower gives it a longer range.
All grenades can be stuck to walls to make traps, and if you're down with a frag you can press the right trigger to blow yourself up along with anyone near you. Otherwise the right trigger makes you raise your hand and call to teammates.
That's all I can think of for weapons right now, and most of that is probably already known, but for those that don't, there you go!

I admit I didn't play very far, but through the first level, it seems that cover - isn't. You'll get shot right through whatever you can stick to. And also, even assault rifles from the future are less accurate than muskets and flintlocks; guns were only really useful at contact distance. On a foundation like that, I just couldn't force myself through the rest.

No offense to AJ Glasser, but why do they put a person who sucks at shooters to do a non-review review? Let alone not even a fan of Gears.
Anyway, I think Gears of War is one of the greatest games ever made. I wasn't into online shooters till Gears. Now it's the longest game I've ever been playing.
I played it last night with friends and had a ball!

@RageKage: Why? Someone who has liked and played the first one is more likely to be more subjective about their analysis of it. Especially since it is rare you get a review from such a high profile title that won't be gushing over it with perfect tens via hype - versus a point of view that has never played it before which would look at it more objectively. If you want those kinds of reviews, trust me, there will be plenty of sites whose sponsors lobby their scores providing their insight.

Gaming Journalists do not play every game ever made. Its not mandatory. And some people hate gears, me included.
A FPS should have a good Single player campaign, then a good Multi. Single should come first, because, well, I but it for that (even though I do love the multi-player).
I will still pick up GoW2 just so I can't say I never gave it a chance. But, RFOM 2 is looking much more appealing.

@Modus_Operandi: While it's always nice to get the perspective of an outsider, I also would've preferred someone already familiar with Gears 1 to have played the preview. Atleast then we could've gotten a heads-up on any changes made to the weapons/features/etc.
Especially when the writer is criticizing the Boltok for being a revolver instead of its usefulness as a gun. -_-;; "It's the future, right? Why do they still have revolvers?!" Um, to shoot people with?

@SaanZ: Wtf did Halo did for shooters, that is the one of the silliest things i've ever seen someone say on this site(i'm dead serious, and i really do want you to respond as this is going to be gold).
Can you speak to the quality of the build, the build that was at the EB canada expo last week was quite literally unplayable if you strayed off this tiny razors edge path that the MS rep wanted you to stay on.Stray off that path and the background/char would disappear, crazy never before seen lvls of pop in etc etc.
Now i refuse to believe that a game of that caliber is that borked this close to release,so i'm assuming they just brought an OOOOOOLD build to Canada. Can you confirm decent performance while NOT doing what the rep wanted you too?

@GhostWhoWalks: I think AJ's point was that revolvers are "old" technology, which should have been replaced in the future.
But of course, the crucial advantage of revolvers is that, besides packing a superior punch, they don't use casings and thus don't jam - not that guns ever jam in videogames, mind you.
So it would make sense that they'd still exist in the future. After all, in over a century, we still haven't come up with a 100% jam-free semi-auto.
But I'm no expert, I'm just taking the word of countless movie/TV/videogame gunmen who explain their preference for revolvers by their increased reliability (usually before saying: "Y'only need one bullet to kill someone anyway. 15-round clips are for pussies whose mothers I abundantly spit upon.")

I have to say Gears of War beats out Resistance on gameplay alone. The cover system isnt revolutionary but Id compare it to what Halo did for FPS games in general. The art style was pretty good, it wasnt always the reddish grey people complain about. The story had a good setting and unfolding like a good action movie were things mostly made sense. You never saw anything too impossible.
Multiplayer had connection and depth issues but it was unique from any other game with great maps and a great core gameplay and in regards to balance, if you're relying on one weapon your probably just not very good or playing with people who arent very good.
Resistance has a more fleshed out story and interesting weapons. But its gameplay was an FPS without too many gimmicks without its weapons (which were great, and I have no doubt in saying in terms singleplayer it was much better experience) But gameplay wise Gears takes it.
Gears 2 looks leaps better than the first in terms of gameplay with greater vareity in weapons and more gameplay elements. Mulitplayer has been fleshed out and the single player made more appealing with more unique scenarios. And no light tank levels... thank you.
Resistance 2 looks great as well and has its own strengths in terms of being a FPS with a huge number of players. At the end their completely different games and while Resistance has better polish the only reason to say one is much better than the other is that you dont have a PS3/360 or are just a fan of one console more that you want to admit.

1) It's a nail in 360's coffin because the game is so taxing on the 360 that it will cause a RROD. Hence, a nail in the coffin.

3) You hate the 360.

Although an earlier post grammatically got it wrong. One thing they got right is the stereotypes. Now while I'm certainly not offended be the big black guy, with bad ebonics, and a little bit of overt black southern sass thrown in for good measure. I am getting a little bored of it. Every time I see it ( and it's not just Gears ) I'm like really... do the developers find this character to be the "go to black guy" to help insure mass acceptance. Hey I'm black so I have to ask, " Hey, all types of people. do you actually welcome this character in your games? Does he make you let out a chuckle for the right reasons or the wrong ones? If the default character was only this
guy, would you want to be him?" Every game we play, we are asked to stop being ourselves and be- a bounty hunter; an elf; a plumber; a wizard; a ninja; a WWII vet; a female bounty hunter etc... And most of us are excited to be any of those from months to year prior to release. That being said, would you wait with baited breath for ' The next most unbelievable game!" where the default character is a big dumb black guy?

I'm not the biggest shooter fan.. In fact, wait for the blasphemy.. 3,2,1... I even hate Halo.
I picked up Gears when I bought my 360 because I thought it looked interesting, I put it straight in when I got home, played it and loved it.
Sure there were frustrating as feck moments, especially if playing it single player.. Dom is such a stupid bastard.. that's unfair.. Baird, Cole, Kim and Carmine also have their "dkgljdflgh!" moments.
But once you get into it and stop trying to shoot your allies for being stupid feckers, it's really fun.
I don't know what it was about it but I loved it..
Then I went online... and I sucked. Seriously I still suck after over a year of practice. But still, I love it. I love playing with people I've just met and people I've played with for months on end, shouting at eachother and screaming with laughter, it's something some take far too seriously, but mostly it's just a barrel of laughs.
Looking forward to Gears 2... And I don't mind someone who hasn't played the original giving a preview of the next one, I mean it is just a preview, it's not like she could give away anything we didn't already know anyway.. But if it helps get more people like her and me into the series, good for her and good for it.

@휘성: You made a fatal assumption there. You assumed Infinite Undiscovery was performing badly because the game pushed it to the limits and not because of poor coding.
Let's take some cases:
1) If you remember the first Geometry Wars, the game would slow down when it had a lot of stuff going on on screen. That game was some programmers side project. Geometry Wars 2 had much more going on at much higher frame rates and generally performs flawlessly but unlike the first game, it was treated more like a proper game and there was ample time to understand how to tap the 360 potential even more.
2) The original Gears was using the first generation UE3 and ran marvelously for the game. They modified this version of the UE3 as they were porting it to the PS3 for Unreal and added features to make it support bigger words and other features. If you remember GDC 2008, Epic revealed the next iteration of the UE3 that incorporated many more features into it such as soft-body physics, and destructible environments; they used this version to make Gears 2. Epic has even stated that the next iteration of UE3 will be released for the 360 life cycle and will have even more features with the same bar set for performance. Also take into the account that no one whose seen the game played has bitched about the frame rate.
I'm not sure what logic you based your statements on but I'm going to have to disagree with them.

Call me crazy, but I'm fairly confident that not playing the first Gears would universally make someone's impressions of Gears 2 stronger. Gears 1 definitely had some weirdness that I think was let off the hook simply because that game was one of the first tastes of the potential of the current generation of consoles. Not having experienced some of that game's issues may leave a better overall impression of certain concepts since they've received enough extra polish in the intervening 2-3 years; in the case of a Gears 1 veteran, this polish may only come off as marginal improvements.
