Lego Universe To Feature Star Wars & Other Lego Game IP?
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 3:00 PM on October 8, 2008
The Lego Universe MMO is shaping up nicely, with what the developers told us would be "really core LEGO play" - building stuff, in other words.
In an interview with Massively, though, NetDevil's Mark Hansen did not entirely dismiss the suggestion that some of the licensed properties from the Traveller's Tales games might make an appearance in the future.
When asked if this was the case, Hansen said, "No, not at all. I think you will ... yeah. (laughs)"
It might be a nice extra but you have to hope that this doesn't distract from the basic Legoiness that the game seems to offer. It is always more fun if you make it yourself, after all.

So, in other words, the headline should just "Lego Universe will not feature other game IP," right?

As long as I can be a troll like in the new castle Lego sets I don't care what IPs are in Lego Universe

Frankly Lego has enough good franchises to stand on its own. Pirates, Space, Fantasy. Why bother with other IP's? In fact, I'll be disappointed if any movie legos make it in. I played with M:Tron and the Black Knights growing up, and that's what I want in a video game.

@Fuzzy Logic: Me too, but that doesn't really have much branding power.

Alright, making my own Battlemechs then. Never could afford to buy enough actual Legos to make my mercenary company. Now, hopefully I can.

Is there really a point?
Look at games like Spore and LittleBigPlanet. You don't need to official license anything because, with a user-created content game, if the user wants it, you can bet they'll make it.
This way the developers avoid having to pay royalties.

Here's to hoping the Explorian sets make an appearance. Aah, those sets were my childhood, especially the huge ship with the three pilot seats in the front.

@Trizero:
Exploriens were pwned by Blacktron I. For that matter, so were pretty much every other Space faction...

Non Licensed Lego kits were the best, hands down.
