Mod Lets You Use Your PSP As A Second Computer Monitor
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 4:40 PM on October 8, 2008
Well, here's something to file under interesting, but likely impractical. If you've been dying to get a second monitor for your PC and you've a little low on cash, fear not. Meet PSPdisp, a new homebrew mod created by Jochen Schleu that allows you to use your PSP as a second monitor. The idea is pretty nifty except I'm wondering how well you can actually see anything on that PSP screen. The site does claim you can get 960x544 worth of screen space on it.

Actually as crazy as it sounds, it's not crazy at all. I'm currently watching the Political Debates right now not on my TV, not on my computer monitor and not on any traditional device. No, I'm actually watching it on my Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet's LCD screen. Surprisingly it doubles as a great monitor in a pinch and a smaller device, like a PSP would have even higher quality picture for video/display due to the smaller size and closeness of pixels. I think this has a lot of potential in the long run and if Sony were to support it, I'd be all for it.

@TheXanadu: Embrace homebrew? You do know you can install linux on the PS3 and its fully supported.
And that on this you can install things like N64 emulators that work with this sixaxis?

God... if only Sony would embrace homebrew... Look at the stuff like Little Big Planet- if they encouraged freeware while making an incentive to buy stuff at the same time (Iphone is a perfect example) the PSP could do so well....

@NiGHTSSTUDiO: Yeah but... I'd rather have it where the PSP was a separate screen that was controlled by the d-pad and buttons and you could launch your apps from there instead of minimizing to the desktop. That's just me though.

I didn't think the PSP was capable of that high of a resolution. Can it display that resolution or is it capable of actually rendering all the pixels?

@TheXanadu: Sony fully support the running of Linux on the PS3. There's even an option right in there to "install other OS" and another option to boot into said other OS by default instead of the XMB. And, from their own mouth, the whole purpose is to encourage "homebrew". Also, they had originally planned on shipping the PS3 with some form of Linux pre-installed, but decided not to at the last minute (probably due to issues with GNU licensing or something).
Sony have made alot of stupid decisions this gen, but in terms of allowing and even encouraging people to do what they want with their systems, they are leaps and bounds ahead of their competition. And by the way, they even supported modding the PS2 to run Linux and homebrew and even sold a special PS2 model whose sole purpose was to run Linux.

@TheXanadu: Also, i forgot to mention, you know that on UT3 for the PS3 you can import your own modifications, something you won't be able to do on the 360 version because of microsofts decision.
So if you think about it, its the only of the latest gen stuff that has any sort of real support that wasn't hacked into it.

We've got a 20" Cintiq at school... I find the colours to be kinda too grey. U? Apart from that, it's okay to draw on. We've got it set up in a crappy place (no room under the counter for legs), so it's a bit weird to use, but it's really neat.

Not bad. I might actually use this. I use my laptop on while in bed, so having an extra monitor is a bit impractical. However, having something like a small PSP be the monitor can be nice.
If you've ever used dual monitors, they can be damn useful (after you get used to it). I'd like to have my email/instant messenger/music playlist on my secondary monitor to unclutter my main workspace and taskbar.

@Noel_Leon:
You're absolutely right, they never answered. Plus, Sony made a big fuss about Hacking the PSP. It was back in january I think, when they got their poll out to see why people were hacking the PSP. Well, in any case, When I hear "support for mods" I'm thinking mre about sending an e-mail just to know some specs or something vital to your homebrew, which I doubt sony does. You can install Linux on basically anything that has a hard drive, it's not really a big step forward imo.

I was messing with this last night and was honestly pretty amazed.
This is a novel application, I might use it to hold my control panel in Audition or maybe even a Messenger window.
I was playing Oblivion and a few other games and the frame rates were quite exceptional, although there was a bit of flickering here and there.
Set your games or desktop to 800x600 to have the screen fit.
I even popped onto youtube and checked out a few videos, the voice sync is on par.
I have noticed a few issues here and there but for version 1 this is pretty amazing stuff!
Impractical, maybe.. Cool..? Hell ya!
