Two Even More Insane Mirror's Edge Gameplay Videos
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 3:30 AM on October 8, 2008
If there was any room left in our minds to be impressed with this game, that void has been filled. After our correspondent A.J. met "Dude Huge" at the Mirror's Edge event yesterday she sent us these two videos full of free running insanity. The first one focuses on a chopper chase resembling the one found in Half Life 2, except you're jumping from skyscrapers. In the second, Faith seems to be taking an alternate route, but similar to a video we posted a while back, which is no less impressive. We can't wait to get our hands on it! Second video after the jump.

I have had dreams that look like this gameplay footage, and plus, with all the running and jumping, I can just tell myself that this is the single-player TF2 content featuring the Scout that I've always wanted.
I'm excited about the concept, but I'll wait to hear about the controls from reviewers first. Seems like that's the key to making this fun.

I'm gonna go on record (Kotaku) and say, i don't believe this is going to be very good. The game play looks as if it could become rather repetitive rather fast.
On top of that the combat looks lack-luster. I'm getting allusions of Maken X all over again. Don't flame me.....just saying.

My only real problem with this game so far is that in the second video, Faith takes a sniper bullet that I'm guessing is pretty well within the torso area, yet she lives. Then she takes one of those rifles and kills the snipers by shooting THEM in the torso once.
If it kills the enemy, shouldn't it be a little deadly for the player as well?

Ever since I watched the first video on this game earlier on, I have had this game on my radar. I cannot wait to get my hands on it in November. I'd like for it to be a first day purchase, but between the fact I'll still be obsessing over LittleBigPlanet and drooling over Left 4 Dead, I don't know if it'll be week one or not.
On a related side note, as awesome as I think this game is, I think EA is over-reaching with the special editions of their untested IPs. As much as I like the bag they are offering with 'Mirror's Edge', the package isn't worth $110+. Most messenger bags are only $29.99 for one that size. If they were offering it for $90-$100, we'd probably be talking something realistic.
But...yeah, 'Mirror's Edge' for the win.

I can't wait for this game (to come out on PC unfortunately), as the single player looks immense fun. The replayability will come from challenges (achievements or self-imposed) such as not killing anyone. Also, I imagine the time trial mode will end up being like Trackmania, as you desperately look to shave time off with each run :D

I initially didn't think this game was going to be anything more than an experiment, but the more I see the more it looks like one damn entertaining experience (with a unique colour palette for a change). Don't know how varied the gameplay will get, but perhaps this will work as a short enough setpiece based SP experience.

"Where's that again?"
"How many times do I got to tell ya? It's simple. You slide under railing 13, swing over the exhaust grid, and then monkey flip the first open chasm you run into. Even a blind man couldn't miss sector G. Geez. Go on, get outta here."

I can't yet decide whether to get this for PC or the 360, as it conflicts with my general criteria of genre-to-platform decisions! Typically, any First-Person game is going to my PC, seeing as how I find that much more comfortable for such games, but it's a platformer, something I restrict almost definitely to a console...
This is like choosing which child I feel like feeding this month, and it's not an easy decision damnit!

@MJDeviant: I'm glad someone else feels the same way. Beyond obviously waiting for people's reactions to actual gameplay, beyond the fact that my personal threshold of verisimilitude is crossed when everyone missed the girl all the time, and can take bullets without falling, I just don't think the first person pov is the way to go. I get why it seemed like a good idea...but I rather see the scrambling and the running. Watching free running/parkour is interesting because you see a body in motion, this looks like an awkward fps, where because I don't know where my character's feet are, I'll fall over the side all the time.

I'm not entirely sold on the idea of first person platforming. I don't know how to explain it, but in first person games I don't know where my body really is (proprioception?), and I think this is the reason most platformers are third person. Also I'm afraid constant deaths will take away from the rhythm and speed of this game. Being shot at/chased and creative platforming/puzzle-solving in a 3D environment don't seem to go together too well in my personal experience. Hopefully DICE can pull this off, but I'm skeptical.

@VergessenHeld: Well that's pretty standard in almost any FPS affair. It's basic game balance: the player needs to be able to take more of a beating than the enemies otherwise the game will be too hard and not fun.
Take a look at Doom 3. You're fighting demons from hell, your fellow marines drop like flies/get possessed, yet your character can take more punishment than any of them. Two shotgun rounds to imp = dead imp. Two shotgun round to the player = what, -25 to your health without armor?
Or how about Call of Duty or Gears? "Shit, I took a rifle round to the stomach! Just gonna hide behind this rock for a few seconds...almost there...ok, I'm fine. It's like it never happened!" Halo gets a pass on this 'cause it's explained away as the shield mechanic of Chief's suite.

Love the lighting. Atmospherically, it's the strongest since Half-Life 1 from what I see here.
I'm not sure about the movement, though. The glowing, red pipes... the thin paths available... they look a bit like a more interactive version of those horrible, horrible "quick time events" that are so popular now. Press "A" when seeing something that glows red.
And everything is probably dumbed down for unresponsive game controller movement, too (it hurts to see the player in this vids turning around so slowly while doing frickin' PARKOUR moves).
I'm not sure yet. EA sprinkling their suckiness over the game since 2004, probably drowning the title in DRM for its PC release to protect their money-printing rights (btw, here's how much they care about their starving employees: [www.gamasutra.com]) doesn't help either.

In the first vid, her jumping and landing abilities are just too unreal. Obviously its a game, and her abilities are significantly exaggerated, but the falls that she's capable of seem way beyond what professional freerunners do. She'd have to roll a lot more to keep from breaking her legs on a lot of that stuff, or kick a wall on the way down to reduce her downward momentum. I mean, who out there can fall 15-20 feet and land without missing a step?
And, on the first vid at 1:08, what exactly is going on here? Can Faith fly or something?

Impressive, for sure. However, being impressed is very different from being satisfied.
Like everybody else, I'm very intrigued and interested in Mirror's Edge, but like everybody else, I was also intrigued and interested in Assassin's Creed. I won't repeat the mistake of buying a game based on pre-release videos and walkthroughs, no matter how amazing they seem.
There are just too many potential hits coming out this fall to take chances.
I'm wary that this game could be insane fun for a while (as you discover the many possibilities of running/jumping/swinging/sliding your way around), and then fall into the kind of repetitive pattern that many "we-have-this-awesome-new-mechanic" games suffer from.
Also, all these videos feature a player who knows exactly what they're doing and where they're going. Will the experience really be as smooth for a regular gamer, or will endless trial-and-error be a precondition to enjoying a fast and flowing ride?
I really need to know how strong the story is, how the gameplay holds up as you progress, and how long the game is. Only proper reviews will answer those questions.
Let's hope Mirror's Edge is as amazing as it looks.

The colors in this game give me anxiety, and I have an Anxiety disorded. For some reason I cant process the colors of the buildings. Way before I seen this game maybe when I was a kid I had a dream about extra clean extra shinny city's that looked like thats. And I also thought of a First person game that played like that. but i thould in would never work.

I'm still on the fence with this title. The more I see video the less impressed I am with it.
I guess what really bugs me is the NPC shooting at you to no avail. What do I have to do? Sit still for a minute or two? It just adds comes off as cheezy, sure the game would suck if I died all the time...so give me other hurdles (pun) to overcome as this aspect really draws away from the potential imersion that games seems to be striving for. Maybe a more simple fix would be to add more cover for the player. I don't want the baddies to stand there pointing a gun at me and doing nothing or helis shootinga bunch of round at me in the opne and never hitting me. Too late now this game must be gold already. We'll see how it pans out, I hope this is a fun game. Good luck DICE. :)

@VergessenHeld: My opinion, completely unfounded in any given facts, is that this is a difficulty mode thing. I believe that enemies get more deadly and more accurate the harder the difficulty level. Though I don't have any direct evidence that there even IS a difficulty mode, I'm comfortable in that belief.

@ludwigk: They've said in interviews that since the setting isn't necessarily a real place, that they've exaggerated it to fit this particular world. So while the characters are human, they aren't necessarily our version of human. I don't mind some crazy stunts as long as the gameplay benefits from it and it's still at least a tiny bit grounded in reality.

Dunno, it's an interesting concept, but the story and style are rather boring. These levels don't really look like anything you would encounter in real life except for the skyscraper sliding part. It would've been much more impressive it the setting was more true to life, now it's more like generic compounds filled with strategically placed poles and platforms.

What's up with her knees and ankles? Mines would surely break with much lower drops... And it may be nitpicking from me, but when you land from such a drop, shouldn't you move slightly to recover your balance? It's as if she is a straight stick when she lands.
Also, I saw the game in action at an event recently and when the person who controls Faith isn't as good as the guy who plays for the trailers, it is a lot less fluid.
Anyways, I'm still interested, but I'll be cautious about this one and it is clearly not the first title on which I'll put my money on this fall.

It looks fun. But ... I dunno. It's not blowing my mind. The only thing that really stands out to me is the fact that they bothered to work in multiple routes. That's not something you usually see in an FPS.
I thought that the whole first-person-perspective, with the hands and feet in the frame were supposed to enhance immersion, but for some reason it doesn't really feel immersive. I understand that 1-hit deaths aren't fun for the gamer, but it all seems very videogame-y. The gameplay is rife with accepted platformer paradigms. That's fine. I like platformers. But I prefer it when they don't have some strange pretense of realism lathered on. It feels like a fake tan looks.

It was stated before that the things are not actually red. A free-runner would be able to quickly realize what can be utilized to help them traverse an area. They would notice things like a ramp they could use to jump across a gap quicker than a regular person could. Because the majority of gamers dont have this sense of intuition, they simulate it by highlighting it. Its like the slow-mo feature in F.E.A.R. Time doesn't actually slow down, its just a way of simulating having faster reflexes than your enemy. Or the visible scent trails in Twilight Princess. I mean how else can you simulate tracking something's scent, unless you went all out and built a smell-o-vision?
Now, as to why said ramps exist, I offer up this explanation. I believe that a Ninja would, before infiltrating a palace or something, would send a student and hid something like a springboard to make a future escape easier. I imagine that something similar would be happening here.

Oh, there's only one of them in the world, and it's in this graveyard at the other end of the country.
Ok...
Now, take your hookshot and use it to fling yourself over this gap. But watch out for the falling ceiling at the other side. Yeah, there are only certain squares on the floor you can stand in because the ceiling falls every 4 seconds...

@MJDeviant: At 1:24 in the video...when playing how would you even know to jump off the wall, make a 90 degree turn towards a completely different direction and grab a poll unless it automatically does it for you?
I would have kept going straight and wouldn't even have been able to see the alternate route the way the view is setup. You can't exactly slow down since you're being shot at the entire time and it would take some momentum to jump that far I would think. (Like you couldn't do it if you just stopped, saw the jump and went for it because you wouldn't be able to make the distance)

I'm a bit confused. I'm super excited for this title, but that was a lot of running away and a lot of getting shot at without actually getting shot. I hope that's not what the whole game ends up being like.
Why wasn't she being hit? If constant movement makes it so that you can't get shot, then the shooting becomes meaningless...there has to be some sort of trick to not getting shot when there's that much fire happening...and it didn't seem like she was doing anything special besides traversing the level.

I'm still interested, but I have to admit a couple things bothered me. Especially in the 2nd video, the jumps and grapples are so magnetic. There's a definite, too obvious pull going on that steers you towards the correct grip or landing. Like your hands are magnets. I understand the need, but make it less automatic looking. Also, the gun-play looks iffy (I know it's not the focus) and the slowdown during, pulls you out of the really well done environment.
It still has some time to simmer, so I'm not that worried.

Yes, it was impressive the first video I saw, but there's not been a video that doesn't take place on the same set of silvery-blue skyscrapers with orange highlights on the same cloudless day with the same events and outcomes.
Is there any versatility here? Do we visit an older district? Chinatown? Maybe on a rainy day? Or night? For that matter, where's the ground? Where are the interiors of buildings?
And I wonder if ropes or hang gliders will be incorporated. I just feel like there's not enough meat here to go a whole game. If it was one level in some larger game, it would be outstanding.

The breakthrough here is that we're seeing a game doing something DIFFERENT. That's to be praised. That's what gamers want. Anyway, even if the game ends up sucking, I've got one word: Immersion. I'm already seeing lots of it in the clips.

This may be the only title where I am ever inclined to say "DON'T LOOK DOWN, FOR GOD'S SAKES!" to someone playing it.
#Rant ahead#
The little FPS bit going on was nice. I'm a huge FPS fan but today I've gotten a bit tired of the whole "Oh, you get like 5 bullets!" thing, but that turns out to be a lie. This seems more interesting; keeping guns would actually impede your progress and you rarely get to use them.
Also: I hope there is no HUD. This looks immersive enough.
This seems like the sort of game where I would get lost, even with the red objects. But we'll see; in general, I like it the looks of this.

it almost seems like the freestyling of assassins creed was isolated and then purified

I am so fucking excited for this game that I didn't even watch the video because I don't want anything to be spoiled for me.

Wow. The graphics are amazing, the effects are cool. But I tell you what, guys, the idea sucks. But this game's still gonna be cool, won't it?
I think EA has just renewed my faith in them!

@B1ooDshOt: I'd love to do like a real-time online running man kind of game. Like a race, but on foot. Just be given a massive city map to play in, starting location and destination and first person there wins.

I hope it has like 'time trail' rooms, a 'freeroam' mode where you can just explore without restrictions of fighting, and a level editor.
If it comes with a level editor I'll definatly pick it up for PC.

I highly doubt gameplay will actually be that smooth unless you have the entire area memorized (as this player clearly did). I could never play this game because I'd be too cautious about those huge jumps and get killed...
