Warcraft Mod Becomes League of Legends
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 12:20 PM on October 8, 2008
Riot Games - the crew behind the popular Defense of the Ancients mod for Warcraft III - have taken the basic premise of the game and created their own independent IP - League Of Legends.
Players control a Summoner - a commander character that can be leveled up and enhanced - who controls troops taking part in organized arena-type battles.
The game is 'semi persistent' with champions and gaining levels and items that are lost at the end of a session, while your core Summoner avatar will be carried forwards to the next bout.

Riot games are not behind DotA. At least read the freaking wikipedia link you posted.

@HenryHSH: Yeah, the guy who made the original DOTA had the Bnet tag of Eul. Rumor goes he wasn't even 18 when he made it.
But eventually someone cracked the protection on it, and it was taken over by others.
Looking at Riot Games's website for team members ([www.riotgames.com]), it looks like they have Steve "Guinsoo" Feak, who is listed as one of the creators of DOTA-allstars. So post-Eul, post-cracking. So he may have made DOTA what it is today, but he didn't create DOTA originally.

Well, since DotA was kinda based on Aeon of Strife(the Starcraft one...), and DotA Allstars is the one more people play and know (even though people just refer to it as DotA) made and constantly updated by IceFox, I can only have worries about this game. It looks good, but I don't know if its gonna be all that great.
=/ I'll check it out if I get into the Beta. Not so sold yet.

@Tyheam: IMHO, it's one of the most successful game mods/maps of all time. The world of social organization that has grown up around DoTA is proof enough...look at TDA, Banlist, crazy Swedish DoTA music videos, international tournaments.
The platform is over 5 years old and yet the community is as lively as ever and meaningful map updates continue to come in on a regular basis. I had never thought of a stand-alone DoTA, but it now seems overdue (although I hope it doesn't kill the original).

@Xagest: Well all the trailer says is "the minds behind dota" and after looking around a lot it looks like Riot has no connection at all so I'm assuming they have at least one or two people who worked on Dota. For all we know, it could be people who didn't even do much, but hopefully it actually is people who know Dota.

If this game is anywhere as fun or addictive as DotA, I'll be really looking forward to it. The real question is whether or not the multiplayer aspect will have the ease of finding players similar to how Bnet operates. The one thing that can kill a (presumably) great game like this faster than AoC is a horrible matchmaking system.

I always thought that Dota was changed so many times by so many different people that no one knows who created this game. Which doesn't matter people its based of AoS. Does this mean were going to playing Kodo Tag on Xbox live and Hero Siege on DS. I mean, theres already 30+ different Flash Tower Defense games. At this point, it seems StarCraft 2 should come with a way to get patents in their Map Editor.

@Tyheam: I agree, it was a very well-done AOS, but I never was a huge fan of it. There were alot of other fun custom AOSs for WC3 that I enjoyed more.
Admittedly, the main excitement I have for Starcraft 2 is for what great custom AOS maps they will create.

How exactly is Riot Games, the "crew" who made DOTA? That is complete marketing bs, as i am sure my buddy Ice Frog, or anyone else involved with Dota, will tell you.
The teaser video doesn't even show gameplay, which is a very bad sign. Either the art doesn't look good, or the game ins't functional.

@Spiral: So who would you say is ultimately responsible for the polished, mostly balanced game DoTA is now? I, too, remember the old DoTA maps. But I never thought that they distinguished themselves from all the other semi-ubiquitous user created maps. At a certain point it became very mature though.

@selectman: It's funny, I feel the opposite. Once DOTA went all-star, it felt like DOTA got very immature, which is why I stopped playing it. It had been polished before, but the All-star seemed to tinker around with the balance in ways I did not like. It felt like they were all, "let's make this super awesome awesome hardcore lol glhf". That's why I started liking some of the other AOS style maps. So I'm probably the wrong person to ask about the evolution in that phase. It sounds like Xagest might know that piece of history better.

The only reason i didnt toss WC3 after i speed hacked to see all the cinematics was I got introduced to DOTA. WC3 for me was a huge disappointment (hated the in-game cut scenes).
I can't get into WoW but a good game of dota is always fun. I still go back to it after ever game i buy loses its appeal after a few weeks (Halo, COD, GTA, SC4, etc...). I think the current map is by ICEFROG.

Why would anyone buy this if you can play the Wc3 map for free (or like 10 bucks incase you don't own Wc3 yet)?
Hell, it's pretty much the only decent map left that is played on battlenet (even though there were more interesting AoS maps around).
And if Starcraft II and Brawl are any indication, the core fanbase is going to shun the sequel if it doesn't play exactly like the original.

I've seen the competition, i.e. GPG's Demigod at PAX. Being a bias DoTA gamer since its conception on War3 RoC bnet, to say the least, it doesn't seem to stand up to DoTA in its current form. I would welcome any iteration of DoTA nonetheless. But there are alot of aspects of DoTA that makes it awesome and it would be difficult to nail, even with guinsoo in the team. Who really wants to pay for some game that plays like a free mod that is much more easily accessible? Towards the end of guinsoo's involvement with the mod, DoTA became sloppy and unbalanced. Icefrog (and his team) was the one who cleaned up most of the map, made it faster to load and continues to add new features / revamp how the map is played. I think it might even be the very epitome of successful crowd sourcing game development.
