Cave Story - Everything That's Old Is New Again
Posted by AJ Glasser at 12:20 PM on October 9, 2008
Cave Story evokes nostalgia, which is weird, considering that the game is only four years old. The pixilated graphics and action/adventure style of gameplay are supposed to remind you of a simpler time when the only ways to go were left, right, up or down - and you started your quest with just one gun and three hearts.
At first, I mistook it for something my teenage babysitter used to play to entertain me when I was a kid (his favourite was Bonk's Adventure, mine was Metroid). But after listening to the demo handler discuss the details - especially the part about how hands-on the Japanese creator is with this WiiWare version - I got my story straight and started looking for reasons why gamers would want to regress to this kind of gameplay.
The thing I noticed right away was the story. It was surprisingly deep, well-written, and it moved damn quick. At the end of the first area, I came to a village of rabbit people arguing about what to do with an evil doctor and a chick that kept herself locked away in a room. There was also a short, creepy scene with a guy at a computer terminal running out of food and pleading for his sister to come save him. Heavy stuff.
I met the first boss in the rabbit village - a dude who can best be described as a suitcase. His co-minion (a chick), made off with one of the rabbit girls and he was left behind to deal with me. He asked if I wanted to fight, and I said no. And he left.
I did a double take. I just talked my way out of a boss fight. That's not something I remember doing in Castlevania or Contra, or any other old game that Cave Story seems to be emulating.
Everything else feels familiar, though. The enemies, the sprites and the backgrounds all have a retro, pixilated feel to it (although the game has gotten a full graphical overhaul for the Wii). You start out without being able to shoot anything, and then you find a gun and level it up so you can shoot bigger and better kinds of blasts. When you go under water, you have an air gauge of 100 that refills when you come up for air. You also find keys and access cards and heart containers to expand your life. The save points are little hard disks (remember those?), and the entire thing will support the Classic Controller - so you can pretend you're playing a SNES while pretending you're playing a twenty year old game.
Overall, I really liked Cave Story. You can tell that a lot of thought, time and energy went into making it and even if you've never playing any game in your life that would lend it some kind of nostalgia, it just feels fun to play. Can you really ask for more from a WiiWare title?
Cave Story should be out in time for the holidays, unless something horrible happens and the push it to early January.

I first played the GP2X port and its a perfect fit for a handheld.

But would it support the Wii remote held sideways? I'm fine with that.

Solid game. This may be the first WiiWare title I consider purchasing (Sin and Punishment's up there, as is MM9).
@saintdestroy: @1Grand_Marquis: Agree with both of you, for the most part. Just because a game is 2D/side-scrolling doesn't mean it's a bad game, e.g. most quality Castlevania games.

"Regress"? That's almost offensive. The gameplay is pure, simple fun. That's actually a step up from many high-budget titles being released today.

It is kind of funny that the most of the big games right now (Bionic Commando: Rearmed, Castle Crashers, Wario Land, Megaman 9, and now this) are all reverting to an older style, despite the rediculous capabilities of the systems.

@saintdestroy: I agree. In fact, I'd say a lot of times, a 2D side scrolling approach would have been a superior approach to making some games. I mean, 3D doesn't make EVERYTHING better.
In fact, I'd say on the whole, it makes only a very few things better.

Ahh, I'm really excited about this turning into a console game. Not so 'everyone' can play it, and not through some idea of 'THE INDIES TAKING ON THE MAINSTREAMS!' or anything. It's just there's one thing that never satisfies when playing the game on the PC.

"The enemies, the sprites and the backgrounds all have a retro, pixilated feel to it"
They don't have a pixelated "feel", they are made of pixels. It's not like the game subtly evokes the 2D era, it is a 2D game. The enemies are sprites. Sprites are pixels.
Also, I'd say the game's smarter, cleaner, and more well-considered than the vast majority of games out these days. It's kind of hard to call it regressive simply because it side-scrolls.

"a dude who can best be described as a suitcase."
I think he's more of a toaster. Maybe a lunch box.
The English version of Cave Story that everybody has been playing so far was a fan-made patch done by a group of people in the US that do a lot of that sort of thing. Since they weren't ever part of the original development team (insomuch as one guy can be a team), I wonder if the Wii version of Cave Story is going to have an entirely new translation... on top of its new music and new graphics (which are optional, I am led to believe). In a way, the Wii version is starting to sound like a remake rather than a port.

ph, and a fair warning. the one flaw with this game, and some may argue that it is a flaw but i believe it to be, is that the ending is influenced by nonsensical decisions that you would never expect. certain characters die if you get an item at a certain time, ext. so ill warn you right now. when you get near the end of the labrinthe level, you will come opn a part where you see a charater fall past you down into a pit. DO NOT GO SEE IF HE IS OK. just don't do it. you gotta jump the pit. use the red spot on the ground as a mark as when to jump. and then later on when you are going through a bunch of shutter doors with another character following you, when you get into the big room DO NOT TALK TO HER. go to the bottom right and pick up a little shiny item there... then do as you must. if you miss those two things the ending is completely different and you miss a big part of the game. and when a certain building is crumbling, theres a shack. and a bookcase inside this shack. check it. then get ready for the craziest platforming EVER.

@sm_twinz: I'm with them. Pixel put a substantial amount of work into the game, and if you enjoy it, you ought to support him. Besides that, if Pixel can see that people are willing to pay money for his game, it may give him reason to get back into game development. This is the general rule of the gamer to developer relationship: Developer makes game, gamer likes game, gamer buys game, developer can afford to make more games. That's why game piracy is such a crime in so many ways. I'm not calling you a software pirate, just saying that good developers ought to get paid for their work, whether they ask you to pay them or not.

I enjoyed the game, the developer deserves some money for such a wonderful creation, and putting it on the WiiWare gives it a much higher level of exposure to people who simply have no clue.
I'm totally embracing this new trend of all these small time people having their games being put out into the world even among people whom aren't very internet savvy. I know cave story is simple to find, but it's not like it has ads, and it's just not widely recognized enough to be linked around so even dad and mom knows what the game is. This is just the kind of attention it needs, and I hope this trend continues.
