First Look At Final Fantasy CC (The One You Can Play On DS AND Wii)
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:00 AM on October 9, 2008
Remember that weird, weird stuff about a Final Fantasy game that would be playable on both Wii AND DS? Here's the details. The game - Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time - will be using something called the Pollux Engine, which just like the label says, allows for cross-platform play. That means people can play together across both systems: you on a DS, a buddy on the Wii. It works by basically porting the DS game to the Wii, re-arranging the screens from top-to-bottom to left-to-right (and adding in an XBLA-style border to boot). Why, then, you'd want to play it on Wii is anyone's guess, but everyone's been asking for bettter Wii/DS connectivity, so here you go.

Wii sucks.
I want FF13 and FF Versus 13, Kingdom Hearts 3, FF7 REMAKE, Xenogears 2, Valkyrie Profile 3, FF Tactics CONSOLE on XBOX 360!

Don't be so quick to naysay it, guys. The potential of 2-player gaming is shamefully ignored in our industry, and even if this isn't overwhelmingly innovative, it could lead to some new ideas. Besides, you're writing the game off completely from two magazine scans?

Sooo... Wait a sec which platform do we actually buy this for? Wii and then ports to DS or DS and ports to Wii? They can't surely charge £40 for a DS game that plays on my Wii, right?

Man, what a poor choice of screen space use. Why don't we get the game in the middle, and the menus on both sides? Overlay it when you press something like + or - for 4:3 screens

@lunarcore: Yeah, would have been much cooler if this engine worked the other way around by splitting the screen, scaling down the graphics, and adding touch support. At least it would make the Wii version worth purchasing over the DS version.

As interesting as this idea is, I'm not sure if it will be as fun as the original multiplayer (which was golden).
I'm hoping to see a FFCC on the Wii that's like the original, but with the DS as the controller. They could make that the Crystal Bearers, as long as they get rid of the terrible character design that was shown in the trailers.

@King of Fun UK: You can get it for either platform - it's the same game. Both versions are selling for 5040 yen, which is the price SE charges for all of their DS games.

Why not just make it so DS and Wii FFCC games connect online and you can play with people regardless of which platform they're on? or like Do Kesubei said, make it like the original but without the Maisma allow players to actually split up and explore different areas at different times like Monster Hunter.
I dunno, it sounds ok, but seems a bit like a missed opportunity.

I think I'd prefer to have the (DS's)second screen icons split into two bars along the left and right sides of the Wii screen. That I think would make more sense and help reorient to widescreen. The current layout just looks like a bad use of space.
Otherwise I look forward to seeing how this works out.

I wish this could be done with Animal Crossing Wild World and City Folk.
Hopefully this will prove to be fun and other people will do things like this. I'm not too sure I am excited for the game yet, but I am excited for what they have developed. It sounds awesome!

@lostgamedev: It probably wont make a bit of difference than on the DS. Might be a bit easier on the hands, not being cramped up on a tiny handheld though. I have a feeling the graphics will look even crappier on a large screen, also.
Needless to say its an added bonus for those who have a Wii, and would like more people to play the game with you who don't have a DS.

this makes no sense and i am very disappointed. The idea behind FF:CC was to seamlessly (no menus on screen) work together with your buddies in an RPG...on one screen.

While the use of screen space looks... well, kludgy, at best, I imagine there was either some limitation with the Pollux engine. Making a cross-platform engine and having it render the graphics in a similar manner on both the DS and the Wii probably made it easier to develop. While not a good justification, I can see it being a plausible one. One plus is that if you are used to playing one version, picking up the other would be pretty easy to do.
I am kind of curious how the games are going to connect to get the multiplayer to work. Is it local wifi or can it/will it be over the 'Net? I haven't found a good explanation on that.
Either way, I think it is cool to see some kind of multiplayer convergence on these platforms that spans the platforms themselves. Maybe this will make the game even more fun with this addition, too. (I, personally, have little experience with Crystal Chronicles on any platform, so please don't think I'm biased against FFCC series with that last comment.)

@Allosteric: I'll probably pick up the DS version, but I'm not going to bother with the Wii game.
I want a CC game where we use the DS as a controller, Nintendo, much like the original. Four player game play with the menus on our DS and the actual game on my TV. Fingers crossed Crystal Bearers is what I'm waiting on.

... I'm still looking for someone to play my original Crystal Chronicles with... someone with a GBA and a link cable... anyone?! (except for you chumps with incompatible Game Boy Micros)
I love the game and the concept of it, but it's really hard to find friends who have GBAs and link cables to provide... I'm actually thinking of buying some for them just so we could play :-S
Anyway, regarding this game... the cross platform gameplay is a great concept (it's basically the opposite idea as compared to what they did with the first one!) You'll have tons of ppl to play with now... I just honestly wish it wasn't DS graphics :-S I love the visuals of the first game and that's why I'm still looking for someone with GBAs and link cables to play with me... :-(

It's hard to tell from the tiny screens... but is it seriously going to look the same on Wii as it does on DS?!
I'm no graphics whore, but this sounds just AWFUL. I know many complain about third-parties putting N64-level graphics on Wii... but this takes the cake.
While the DS isn't HORRIBLE at doing 3D, it only looks okay because it renders on such small screens. Trying to blow that up on TV is a really, really bad idea.
--
Oh, and let's not forget the HORRIBLE screen arrangement for the Wii version. That looks bad enough for widescreen, but what about for those of us who don't have a widescreen TV?!
Surely there's a better way to go about this. Like, instead of emulating the screen exactly, make it some sort of overlay menu buttons. Or maybe make it a menu bar at the top/bottom or sides of the screen.
This is, as it currently is, a terrible design choice.

You want the same mess as FF:CC on the gamecube? REALLY? If they were to take your idea it would be death for the game. I believe that's the real reason FF:CC didnt take off. I loved it, but the requirement of 4 GBAs was too much.

Might be good as a DS game, but like the article said, why in the hell would you want the Wii version of this?
And if the Wii version is undesirable, that makes the whole cross-platform online play kind of pointless...
