LittleBigPlanet: To Wipe, Or Not To Wipe
Posted by Mike Fahey at 4:40 PM on October 9, 2008
We've seen some pretty amazing things come out of the LittleBigPlanet beta test so far, including yesterday's amazing calculating sack boy squad. Wouldn't it be a pity to lose all of that goodness in the name of making sure everyone was on level footing for launch? Right now the LittleBigPlanet news site is hosting a poll asking players both in and out of beta whether or not the user created content created so far should be completely flushed down the toilet once the game launches.
The answer of course is no. We don't want that. It would be a tremendous waste of the work all the beta testers have put in, and would rob so many people of the inspiration the works so far provide. This isn't an MMO, we don't have to worry about anyone having an advantage over us in PVP (Planet versus Planet). Vote no on Operation Tiny Wipe, just like the majority of respondents already are.

@DravenX23: Like Mr. Fahey said in his article, in those other games, keeping your Beta goodies would give you advantages detrimental to players who start the game after its released. Not to mention in most of those games they reset your work so that you'll also p(l)ay longer to get it back.
And if none of that matters, "I'm dragging you down here with me" isn't a superb mindset

Let me play the beta and I'll say yes, until then it's no. I know it's childish, but they really dropped the ball with the whole beta key thing. You all may have had a chance to play, but you'd feel differently if you had tried real hard to get a key but wasn't given one.

no but seriously i lucked out. turns out if i call and scream my head off at the internet company that apparently owns my soul because they cut my internet in the middle of my download causing the download to give an error message, they seem to get that i wont take a "oh we wont do it again we promise" for an answer. they gave me faster internet for free! still takes a long time (downloaded burnout paradise in a literal 24 hours) but its at least something...

I've made some pretty good levels, but just in case, I'm approaching this beta as more of a learning tool than the actuall game. That way, even if all of the levels do get wiped, I'll be experienced enough to keep cranking out great levels.
BTW: Is anyone else getting a lot of lag, now that a lot of people are in the beta? At first, it took me about 5-10 seconds to load someone elses level. Now it takes more like 30-40.
@zgrowler2
Ah....nevermind, lol.

Since it aint an MMO and it aint no competition let the folks keep their created stuff.
Wiping it would be like wiping out a research lab just because new staff is arriving.
The more stuff there is left around the more those ideas can be built upon.
Unless there is a technical reason why the data should be wiped which would cause problems for all new users they should just keep it as is.

Keep 'em.
They're basically free extra content at launch.
The LBP community will be thriving come launch day, and that's always a good thing.
... except, I guess, for the kind of people who feel the urge to post "first" comments.
This is, of course, assuming that there isn't a huge variation between beta and final code (and why should there be? the beta came out mere weeks before release).

Pass. I don't get to keep anything I have worked for in any other Beta. Why should they get to keep theirs?
And don't tell me they are different. I spent hours and hours of my life playing a Beta and once its actually launched all my work is gone. Thats why its called a Beta otherwise you are just getting the game earlier then everyone else.

I don't see why one would vote no considering the Beta players win because their creations don't die, and you win because you have bonus content to explore and become inspired by when you get the game. So people got a head start on ya, it's not a competition, it's a global.. well, regional team effort to create the best stuff you guys can make and share your masterpieces.
I personally don't have a PS3 and don't plan on changing that for a while, but I voted yes because I know there's a PS3 owner out there that won't ever know of this poll, so I shall vote in their stead.

It would be nice to have some of the more complex levels up and running as soon as us newcomers start up the game for the first time. People who have worked really really hard on some levels might lose motivation in remaking them, and some of us would end up missing out on some real gems from now. Sure we'd get a bunch of stuff popping out from the beginning, but I doubt we'll see another LBP take on tetris for a while.

They should wipe the levels out. It would be hell to get all the beta maps working with the game, which is why they were planning to wipe it out in the first place. Plus, if people were forced to make a second version of their level, with the full parts from the full game, no doubt the levels would be much nicer.
It was dumb of them to let people vote like this. Of course, everyone's gonna want to keep the levels, and that means say hello to either a delay or bugs on day one!

They should stay. In the beta I have already played a few great and well designed levels, such as a God of War level, Hollow Bastion, etc as well as the cool things like the calculator and To Zanarkland theme.
If they get rid of all this, lots of work and effort will be gone.

They should get to keep the creations on the grounds that it provides no advantage over another player. At the same time it will provide hours of additional entertainment for everyone.

-A creation tutorial is completed but for some reason it don't want to leave even if I press start, than press leave tutorial. It's just stuck
-Press on an object in creation mode, a rotating circular icon appears on it, but it gets stuck there, no matter how long I wait, it won't load ...

@Ambiguous Blob 2.0: I don't remember ever reading about paying for the levels at some point. If I take what you said to be entirely valid there is a counter to it: Make a good level and people will play it regardless of when it came out. I would bet a terrible level that everyone knows sucks released day 1 wouldn't come close to the downloads of a level that's expertly crafted say, 6 months down the road. The ranking will level out like any other online game and the good stuff will float to the top (Hey not always true, shit floats occasionally too)
Basing your opinion on whether or not they keep their creations on the fact you didn't get into the beta is still a selfish and idiotic point.

As much as I would love to get in the beta I really do not want to get in it yet either I want to have that wow moment with the real game not a beta of the game. So even though these levels will not have every thing the real LBP game will have I still want to play them. So I hope they do not get taken off line.

@seamroy: Wrong! I also tried really really hard as well to get a key and have had no luck what so ever! And incase you forgot, the levels created do count for something! Didn't I read that they would be ranked at some point?... Won't the more popular levels be sold at a later date as expandable content? Won't someone who participated in the Beta that has levels available online day one then have an unfair advantage? I think that alone is grounds to wipe that shit clean and start from scratch for everyone!
Whatever the decision I don't really care since I found one of those mini billboards today at school and snagged it (499 of 1000)! So YAY me! All is right with the world at the moment! :p

I'm in the beta myself, and I have to say it'd be a real shame to lose all of this. Some levels will be recreated, so won't. I'm in the beta and I think all of the levels should be wiped. Including mine.
It kills me to see levels hogging up the front page with over ten thousand plays even though most of them involve either a short walk to a malfunctioning rocket conveyance or the name of a popular gaming franchise in the title.
I imagine that everyone will get the rocket bug again when the game ships, but lets let it happen the way it'll happen with a full game. I'm sure fewer people will dive right into create mode when they have the full story mode to draw inspiration from.

@Zero_: What's 'fair' about not getting credit for an awesome level I made? Half of the whole point about creating and sharing levels (as far as the LBP developers have been repeatedly telling us) is to get attention.
Either it should be a full wipe (which would *actually* be fair, instead of just *seeming* fair), or no wipe at all (which would give all the beta testers a "head start").
Personally, I'm for a wipe.

If the guys developing the game sees no reason to scrape those levels, I don't see any disadvantage in doing so.
Maybe some jealous people will ask to delete them... and for what? So that the people who had tons of work making awesome stuff get their work wasted?
Makes no sense. Also, there's no competition with prizes running on who does the best level, so it's not unfair competition too.

Wipe it all. The uproar people created over getting into the beta was already rediculous enough listening about.
I would not like to see these people be able to keep their creations for the launch version, espeically if it creates issues. It is not what beta testing is about, and I believe allowing them to bring over their created content just enables the rediculous furor over getting into beta.

Though there will be heartbreak as the Beta levels get wiped I know exactly why this must be...
The Beta is old code. It's that simple. Things move quickly in coding, especially towards release. It is a certainty that a large percentage of tools and items have been changed, modified, or totally re-written since the the Beta code was put in the can.
This means that a good percentage of Beta levels will not work as they were designed, or worse, break the game totally. This is especially true of the more complicated wonders, such as the calculator.
This is why the Beta levels need to go. It's sad but it's far better than not being able to enjoy them as intended or having a broken game.
