Mega Man 9 Press Kit Goes For $US750 on eBay
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 1:00 PM on October 9, 2008
Some lucky gamer has seized the chance to splurge next month's rent on a limited-run Mega Man 9 press kit. Capcom have knocked out a bunch of these to selected press and community members. One such has just earned a cool $US750.
Economic meltdown? Pah! As long as there is quality games swag floating abut you can be sure that someone is going to find some ready cash in order to indulge themselves.
Of course, in these difficult times, highly covetable promotional tat is likely to be the most solid investment around. Gold is just a shiny metal, after all - this thing comes in a box shaped like a NES cart.
Beat that, gold. Stupid gold.

I haven't played Megaman 9 yet, but from what I've seen, it's pretty much a NES game. What I want to know is, would it be possible to run on an actual NES if they programmed a cartridge for it? I mean, is there anything graphical or audio that the game does that the NES couldn't? Is it too large, memory wise, for an NES cartridge?
I just think that would be really cool if they actually made a NES cart with Megaman 9 on it so that someone could play it retro for real.

@thespyderboy: Gold is an excellent conductor of electricity. It is actually better than copper iirc. Copper is cheaper though, so they use that.
I don't know that NASA uses gold because of any sturdiness. Pure gold is actually kind of a soft metal. They probably use it for it's conductivity (both electricity and heat) and because it is a relatively inert metal, meaning it doesn't corrode easily.

Re:Update- Damn. Love to see him try to explain that to his wife.
For $750, you'd think the guy would learn screenprinting, gut and repack that old Wall Street Kid cart or something. Heck, for $750, I'd do it.

@Ad-hominem: For the most part, you're absolutely right. However, gold actually does have a lot of 'practical' uses (NASA uses it for a number of projects, if I remember right, due to its sturdiness), and it may or may not also be a good electrical conductor.
As for a slight tangent on the afterthought: I would love to see someone propose to someone else using this. Classic.

The scary part- When you think about it, there really is no difference between gold and these boxes. They're both essentially worthless for any practical uses, meaning their whole value lies in their quality of appearance.
Thought, actually, I guess a T-Shirt is more useful than a worthless piece shit metal.

Did they ever even sell these at the Capcom store, as they promised? They never set a timetable, said there would only be about 200 copies, yet I hear this is from a 'press kit'?
So, how many did they sell in the store, and how many did they give away as press kits?

@tmsoftworks: No, they won't. Some people seem to have this assumption that everything always goes up in value - if you should have learned anything from what's going on in the economy the last few days, it's that that's not the case.
I've had plenty of press packs of various games over the years. I've sold a bunch of them, and the *only* ones that sold for anything are the ones that were basically brand new, for games that were still in the public consciousness. Not a single one has ever gone up in value. Most are worth absolutely nothing after a few years - maybe a couple dollars more than the game by itself. (That's assuming you're including the game with it; if not, then the press pack's worth about as much as the paper it's printed on.)
Let's say you had the press pack to, say, Mega Man 7 right now. Why would anyone want that? Go ahead and try to sell it on Ebay - I'd be surprised if you got more than ten bucks for it.
This is true even for press packs that come with cool stuff.
The only exception to this is press packs for games that are both really important and really rare, and preferably odd in some way. If somebody had the press pack to, say, Custer's Revenge for the Atari VCS, that would probably be worth something today.
But this? This press pack will never be worth more than it is now. And as of tomorrow, it's worth $50.

@badasscat:
The thing with the other press packs is, they're probably just cheap throw away things with no effort put into making them. Would I pay good money for a MM7 press kit? No. It's probably nothing more than a crappy folder with a logo on it and a CD in it. Also, if it's something no one really wanted and there's no way of knowing how rare it is, if I see the thing going for more than like $10 on ebay I'm not going to care to put a bid on it.
The MM9 press kit though is something truly special. It beckons to those of us who still have our NES games to buy it. It's not some cheap gift, it's something that they actually took time to make nostalgic. What's more is that they told us how rare they are, and got every Mega Man fan desperate to add it to their collection of NES cartridges.
I'm not saying every one that's put on ebay will sell for $750 and up, but I'd put money on the fact that it will be worth a lot more than $50.

@Sorwah: Actually no, it's not.
If they were to strip out all of the added features, like the downloadable content, all of the extra modes, the store, and reduce some of the on-screen colors, then it would be possible for this game to be programmed for the original NES.
As the game stands now as a complete package, there is no way that it would work on the NES.
The Robot Master selection screen has more color then possible on the NES.
Not to mention the game is around like what... 60 megs or something like that?
I dunno, if any of this is wrong feel free to correct me.

@dantemustdie: I'm pretty sure that the WiiWare size limit is around 15 megs. And besides, how could they manage to take up even that with a game like MM9?
I'd honestly be surprised if the game weighed in at more than two or three megs.

I used to eBay movie press kits we'd get at my college newspaper, and was always amazed at what some of them fetched.
"Once Upon a Time in Mexico" came in a standard DVD case, nothing really crazy or anything (general rule of thumb was often the shittier the product within, the fancier the exterior packaging), but still got $70 to someone who must REALLY like Robert Rodriguez films.
...And for the record, no, I never pocketed the money. I set it aside for staffers who wrote the best article on a given week and bought them stuff. You'd be amazed what a bottle of Thunderbird or a sixer of Nattie Light can do for the morale of a volunteer staff.
For $750 though... fuck me. I'd like to think I would have bought books for next semester, but that money would've been gone in a week or two at the bar.
As P.T. Barnum once said, "There's a sucker born every minute."
