Resistance: Retribution, Resistance 2 Connect To Add 'Infected' Gameplay
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 9:40 AM on October 10, 2008
PlayStation Portable owners, you're about to get a bit more value our of your copy of Resistance: Retribution. If you also own a copy of Resistance 2 for the PlayStation 3 — and if you're actually going to grab Retribution, there's a good chance you'll have one — connecting your PSP to the PS3 will "infect" your copy of Retribution.
What does that actually mean? All new gameplay features, unlockable items and new areas that can only be reached with an infected copy.
James Grayson, protagonist of Resistance: Retribution, will be infected by the Chimera virus similar to the original game's Nathan Hale. He'll be able to regenerate health — all health packs will be removed — and experience the game in an all new way.
In addition to health regeneration, Grayson also gets a new weapon, the HE .44 Magnum featured in Resistance 2.
Grayson also gets the ability to breathe underwater, letting him access areas of Resistance: Retribution that a normal version of our hero could never reach. That will likely play into finding the new unlockable intel only available if your copy of the PSP game is "infected."
It's a cool little feature that looks to add some replayability to Bend Studio's PSP game, something that hardcore Resistance fans will likely get a kick out of. We'll go play it on those lovely new PSP 3000s right.... NOW.

That is pretty cool at least they're doing something as far as integrating the hardware and software between both the PSP and PS3 I own both and am a huge Resistance fan, not even sure if that appeals to me THAT much though. Pretty cool nonetheless. Better than nothing.

It always strikes me as a little odd, when I consider playing a hand-held game connected to my console. Not only am I tethered to the little black slab underneath my TV, but I'm staring at a screen that's about 4 inches in size - while right next to me is a screen 40 inches.
Don't get me wrong, I like a good hand-held game just as much as the next guy; but I play them when I'm not @ home. It's like taking one step forward and two step backwards, but I gotta' commend Sony for the progression of the PSP (allowing it to hook-up to a TV, and now allowing us to use a PS3 controller with certain games.)
Still... hm

I read that the abilities last until you power off the PSP.
I imagine you would have to add extra "exploration" or one could finish the campaign very quickly.
I'm in, though I wonder how they explain the "uninfection." Does he wake up like from a dream or something. Or maybe there is an antidote aspect to R2 that we don't know about...

@phantomlink: It will work on all PSP's. I think the only thing that only works on PSP 2000's and 3000's is Skype. Everything else works on all 3.

@shadow763: When I rented Resistance, the game felt wierd to me.
For example, in Halo, the gun feels like it bobs with you, while I felt like my guns were fixed to my shoulder in Resistance....if that makes sense. It felt stiff to me.
Though it sounds like I'm a Microsoft parrot, I felt like I could get into the skin of Master Chief and relate to the "space" the character took up, but Hale felt like I was remote controlling a robot with a camera bolted to his head. The sense of relation was just all off.
I don't want to bash one way or the other, but I obviously enjoyed most of Halo and disliked Resistance.

@Edge of Blade: Well it is fun I guess is one way to look at it. The enemies are more interesting then in Halo. Its a more gritty universe, and the new one just looks huge. The Halo series went from wide open areas to battle in to corridors dressed up as jungle environments.

Just to re-iterate my previous point a little more clearly, the way I see it is that you're not getting "a bit more value our of your copy of Resistance: Retribution...if you also own a copy of Resistance 2 for the PlayStation 3", you're instead being punished by having parts of the game locked out if you don't own the above.
Just... Evil.

So, the game content is all there on the disk, but you you have to buy a PS3 and a copy of a second game to access it?
Couldn't they just do it the old fashioned way, with cheat codes or some kind of hard to achieve in-game goals?
Call me a spoil-sport, but I really don't like the idea of having to buy extra stuff to get at content I've already paid for when I bought the damn disk.
(And that goes doubly so for the kind of crap they've been pulling with the SoulCalibur games. You've spent your time developing this content, we've spent our money paying for it. We're not getting a "Bonus Star Wars Character" depending on our platform choice, you're punishing us by arbitrarily cutting a character out of the complete game you developed, depending on our platform choice.)

@SunScramble: It's likely you'll be able to download a save file with an infection. So really, it's a matter of not playing by the rules if you lack R2 or a PS3.

I cannot understand all the people saying, "this is so cool." This basically limits your ability to use features included in the game because you don't want to drop another $50 on some PSP game. I really hate stuff like this.

This is AWESOME! And, to SunScramble, you are being pessimistic. These things were never revealed to be in the game, and we were perfectly happy without them. This is more like a special gift to true fans than anything else. I LOVE this!

SunScramble

Pessimistic, maybe.
Just because they were never announced to be in the final game, though, doesn't mean they're nice added gifts to us. (Unless I missed the news release where they revealed every single last bit of game content to the public in advance of it's launch.)
Personally, I view this as being in the same boat as publishers who might theoretically cut content out of finished games to sell them back to us later as DLC.
It's not quite as outright evil as the above example, but I still consider locking out parts of a finished game, unless a companion product is bought, as pretty cynical, and it's definitely not something I'd celebrate.
