Square Enix, Capcom Booths Are A Teeming Mass Of Humanity
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:00 PM on October 11, 2008
There's no question about what's most popular amongst the locals here at TGS. It's not even close. Seems every single person is here for one of two things. Or, hell, probably both. They're here for the Square Enix, and they're here for Capcom.
These signs are all over Capcom's booths. From left to right, it's Monster Hunter 3, Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5. All three say, basically, they're not letting any more people in. No more. There are too many. Only one other place on the whole showroom has a sign like that.
And, yes, it's Square Enix. That sign for the Square Enix Mega Theatre - which was showing new FFXIII and FFXIII vs trailers - went up before 10:00. And the show wasn't even supposed to open until 10:00. That's how quick the tickets ran out.
All of which basically means that nearly every single person at TGS is trying to cram themselves into those two company's booths.

I would definitely commit a misdemeanor if I was in the middle of that clusterfuck.

@Tyrannical:
It could be down to advertising, perhaps they don't advertise the likes of Gears of War over there, because to be honest, anyone who likes Resident Evil 4/5 and Metal Gear Solid 4, should really be comfortable with the feel and controls of Gears.

@mrwumasta:
I don't get how BioHazzard and Metal Gear are popular in JP, while similar western games are not.

Goes to show that JRPGs are still big business. Too big if you ask me, but they sure do eat them up. I'd like to see more Demon's Soul coverage because it looked pretty interesting. Also I would like to see how the Japanese are handling Gears 2. Wasn't the first Gears fairly popular? I can see them enjoying a bloody romp, full of large manly men, especially cause it is 3rd person.

Were there even companies other than Capcom/Square?

@Lixie: For real, they should have limited the number of 360's per cubic meter.

If they were to make their own console it might just tie the Wii.

@Tyrannical: Because those games have style and flash unlike generic crap like Halo. Thats why Gears was somewhat successful for the time it was released considering how bad the 360 was doing in Japan at that point.
Cliffy B even said there was a lot of JRPG influence in the world design and cutscenes.

There's something about a closed mega theater that seems....stupid?
Trailers are meant to show off your games and how they're progressing, but you only show it off to the people who are NOT the majority of your consumers (Hello? There are millions of us here at home), and to the people you show it to, they can't take pics or record video, so explaining the experience is absolutely pointless.
"I have a video to show everyone. Well, technically just you. We hope to sell this game big."
And it DOES sell big.
Mind-boggling.
