What Could Lara Croft Do? New Behind The Scenes Look At Tomb Raider: Underworld
Posted by Adam Barenblat at 6:00 AM on October 11, 2008
What can Lara do? That's the approach the designers over at Crystal Dynamics are taking when constructing Lara Croft's latest adventure. This third part in the "Beneath the Surface" video series talks about the evolution of Lara Croft herself. It seems like they're off to a good start focusing on her past physical limitations and then breaking them by adding in new gameplay mechanics. The game is set to hit stores November 28th for all consoles and PC, except PSP.

I'd like to see Lara move more fluidly. Tomb Raider: Legend was a big leap in that direction but its still a bit frustrating to have to spend 10 seconds or so trying to set up a jump and failing just because of a small mistake. But then again, frustration is part of the Tomb Raider appeal. Also, I like that they're trying to add more to the combat sections.

I don't think Tomb Raider is popular enough to fuel sales. Sure it had a movie and stuff but I don't think that's going to equal sales.
However everything that is being used to make this game's engine better hopefully will correlate to a better engine for Deus Ex 3. Deus Ex 2 had a really bad engine and bad hardware usage and I hope that by using this engine that they can get around that and make a great game. I mean if this Tomb Raider can compete with Assassin's Creed as far as interaction with the environment then it will be enjoyed. I don't know how many people will pick it up, but if it's good word of mouth should be enough to spur the gaming populace to pick it up.

Everything looks pretty good...except Lara. She still looks very plastic. Please....do something about that before the game comes out or this will be it's only downfall...oh and the plastic looking shark in the other video...Yeah, make it look less plasticy please.

@LastNinja: Deus Ex 3 will run on Tomb Raider's engine, that's what.
Graizur's comment makes a whole lot of sense. The more Crystal Dynamics push and refine the engine, the better will Deus Ex 3 take advantage of it. And the development team won't spend as much time chasing bugs and tweaking the thing.

@TheMurderer: Do yourself a favor and check out Tomb Raider Legend. It was an excellent game that really brought the series back to its roots while still feeling fresh and new.

What are her limitations? Shes not even one fourth as interesting as Nathan Drake for starters...
I can't even look at tomb raider without thinking of how amazing uncharted is.

And all this Drake vs Lara stuff is annoying. Why not hope for two excellent games? More fun for everyone!

2 movies, 19 games, a comic book series, magazine spreads, 6 live action models, an animated series on gametap and countless women play her in cosplay around the world,
Yeah she's not popular at all.

Not popular enough??? good lord, many of my generation of gamers grow with Lara, since her first step on the PSX she was the queen of the adventure games, of course, now she have a tough competition with Nathan Drake but Lara Croft is still an Icon.
you maybe don't know her but that's because you are too young.

@Hellion86: I don't care if it's a real ending or a fake ending, as long as it's a good ending. But I don't really know what you're talking about. Is it a shorter ending? an edited ending? a placeholder that says, "ending under construction"?...what?

If this game ends up anything like Uncharted then I'm sold. It's looking good so far from these sneak peaks that keep getting released. I pleased to see they are paying attention to the minute details like having Lara push plants out of the way as she's running through them.

Maybe Tomb raider developers should get together with Uncharted developers. Try to work out a game that features lara croft and nathan drake together. That would be awesome combination. Aye ? :D

Assassin's Creed is much better on the animations and gestures, and it's been released a year ago now. She doesn't look human, she's still a video game character...which was fine on PS1, when it wasn't really possible to do better. Now we can expect much better.
