First Look At Castlevania Now-Gen Is Shorter Than This Headline
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 4:00 PM on October 12, 2008
Moisten those eyeballs, kids. Give 'em a good soak, because blinking during the Castlevania Tokyo Game Show trailer is not recommended. You'll miss half! Formally announced by Konami and Koji "Mr. Castlevania" Igarashi at TGS 2008, all we know about the title is that it'll be appearing on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Castles will likely be involved, but we're checking with Konami for confirmation.

@Redface:
SOTN begs to differ. The problem is they keep trying to shoehorn 3D into a 2D franchise. While I actually liked Lament of Innocence, I can't deny that 2D is the only true way to ensure a great Castlevania game.

@Saint Anima:
It's Alucard. The game's a direct sequel to SotN. Set about a year or so after the original. Richter and Maria are back, as well as two new vampire hunters. From what I can tell, it's going to explain why Richter sealed off Vampire Killer, and how the Belmonts lost their power.
There's a radio drama being produced that's going to take place just before the game, and it's basically about Alucard seemingly turning evil, while Richter and Maria set out to find him.

Was it confirmed that it's Alucard? If so, not bad.
Also, if it is Alucard, maybe this is the game in the storyline...involving the final battle with Dracula when Julius took him down? Would like to see that one made.

That stupid giant sword just doesn't fit the character. Alucard's all about grace and sophistication. Anything bigger than a longsword is just plain wrong. And preferably, it should be a rapier or a cutlass.

@justhesh: But Alucard wielded all kind of big swords in Symphony of the Night. Also, he had a ridiculous voice actor, so that completely killed any kind of grace or sophistication.
Also, while we're on the subject, I've never been a big fan of the Ann Rice vampire. While I think they should be elegant and well versed, I also think they should have a moment of complete fucked up barely human animality. Or maybe Ann Rice delved into that part of the vampire mythos as well. I could never stand her books for more then a few pages.

@WEGGLES90: Meh, I kind of liked one on the PS2, but they always felt lacking in the face of games like "Devil May Cry", which was initially just a 3D Castlevania like Driver was a 3d Grand Theft Auto... Of course, GTA3 ended up greatly surpassing driver, while the 3d Castlevanias didn't meet with such luck...
I think that the N64 really dragged them down, because Nintendo was forcing people to go 3d when they didn't want to (hmm... there's a lesson in here somewhere...)
N64 - 3d Castlevania games that sucked
PS1 - 2d castlevania games that were AWESOME!
Maybe this game really isn't made for 3D, or what parts of it were have already been secured by DMC games...

@bobtheduck: There's no absolute in anything... just check out Metroid. Metroid was completely reinvented into a great game while keeping the same theme intact. Capcom seems to be doing it with Bionic Commando, though its too soon to say one can at least surmise that it is looking good. Castlevania just needs to be executed properly.

I don't really have a problem with the very idea of a 3D Castlevania game, but they're always implemented so poorly. The biggest issue - and perhaps the only issue - with the games is that of the environments. They. were. horrible. So bland. So repetitive. So extremely uninteresting in every way. With some charming, beautiful, and interesting locations - the more varied the better - and some decent voice-acting I think a 3D Castlevania game could be excellent. I don't really understand why that's so hard. Konami clearly had enough money to hire decent art direction personnel for the MGS series. Why wouldn't they wish to protect their iconic and potential cash-cow franchise by spending the money necessary to get some decent art direction for the 3D entries into the series? I really don't get it.

@Thorax: But they weren't glorified Buster swords, they were just two-handed swords.
And his voice in SotN was great. Just because it was deep doesn't mean it wasn't graceful. In fact, it was better that his voice was deep. If it was higher, he would have been laughable. He's not a femme elf, he's a 400-year-old badass half-vampire.

@bobtheduck: Nintendo didn't 'force' Konami to make Castlevania 3-d, that was Konami's choice, and theres plenty of 2-d platformers out for the N64 so that kind of disapproves your theory
The N64 games, while lacking certainly had some cool ideas, with being able to be bitten and getting affected and that cool time cycle, I agree with sattarsoul it just needs to be executed properly

Wow.. that was a fast trailer! I wonder what they could do, if they created a HD 2D game. Like symphony of the night?(Although it wasn't HD) I mean they just really go all out. I bet then we could actually call a game, a work of art. Or maybe, "Art in motion?" XD
Anyways, look forward to seeing more info on this.

@justhesh: You've just described Raphael from Soulcalibur IV, who is actually rather annoying. Still, in his first appearance (Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse), Alucard was simply unarmed.

@gencid: How about a non-Japanese team? Japanese action games have always paled in comparison to Western developed ones, not to mention the last thing the Castlevania series needs is more flaming leads.
This series could flourish in the hands of a dev. team that knew how to handle the combat and environment well. Each 3D game made in this series has had so much potential, but the devs always try adding SotN elements in to ruin everything.
Konami, give Castlevania to SCEA. They could do amazing things with this IP.

Wow, think Konami heard the complete bewilderment and outrage surrounding Judgement for Wii and then rushed a teaser trailer? I mean, I love the series, but releasing titles every few years across DS, PSP, 360, Wii and PS3 is annoying considering I don't need/want 4 systems every generation. For God's sake, spend some money on this franchise and get the best team to develop a true 3D game with a storyline that has some depth and voice actors with a SAG card. I love 2D, but this series is fast-losing appeal with handheld and spare next-gen level design. You can't tell me that taking this series and making IGA a consultant and handing the reigns over to a new producer wouldn't be a bad idea. I'd love a total remake with added levels and Simon, Dracula, the core bosses and a gorgeous production design. People love these games for the characters and the concepts, which honestly could use some new paint at this point. The idea is still great, and that's why it still works after all these years. Seriously, I'll block-off time on the calendar to field a Konami rep's phone call in the marketing and research department if it gbets us all closer to a release we can be truly excited about again.
