Resident Evil 5 Producer Likes New Controls Better
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 12:30 AM on October 12, 2008
In hopes to pleasing all of the people (or at least some of them), Capcom is offering not just one, but two Resident Evil 5 control schemes. RE5 producer Jun Takeuchi confirmed to Kotaku in early September that the game would be getting a new input layout. While we had heard that the new controls would be run-and-gun in the vein of a standard shooter. The new scheme does have shooter layout elements, but it's still run/walk, stop, shoot.
The new "action" layout is more streamlined and intuitive for those more familiar with Western-style shooters. And for those more familiar with, say, RE4 controls, the game offers a "standard" layout. The new action layout also lets characters strafe when they move — something that RE players have long been asking for.
However, since this is Resident Evil, it's not possible to simultaneously strafe and point and shoot. That makes the addition of strafe in the action controls seem somewhat half-baked. Sure, this is Resident Evil, but the action controls strafe doesn't alter gameplay: Players are still running to an empty corner and shooting and then running to another corner. A shame the action controls don't allow strafing and shooting.
Which does Takeuchi prefer? "I like the newer control layout better. But we're offering both layouts for Japanese gamers who prefer the Resident Evil 4-style layout. Some of the hardcore Japanese gamers probably will like the new controls as well." But Takeuchi says that it was necessary to bridge that East-West controller gap.
Action control layout below.

I would have liked to be able to run and shoot at the same time. Not in a FPS kind a way where all you do is run and jump in circle while loading bullets in a guy. But shooting while moving, though it gives a shitty aim, would be nice when your goal is to survive.

L1 (aim) then, R1 (fire)
It works perfectly for Gears of War, and feels a lot more natural than tapping "X".

Meh, I'll stick with the default setting. Those controls look too confusing. Like why would you have to press L1+R1 to fire? If the controls are for western gamers, then shouldn't be something like R2 only instead?
I know you have to hold one button and press another in Resident Evil 4(and this one supposedly) usually to do an action such as firing, but if its gonna be for western gamers, they should just make the firing and swinging one button only.

@マンゼクスSythe:
L1 to aim then R1 to fire is just about the de facto standard for third person games these days. Check out Gears of War, Uncharted, GTA, etc. and all of them use this kind of control scheme. Even some games where you don't have to use L1 to aim give you an option to use L1 to aim down a gun's sights for better accuracy (MGS4, Call of Duty series)

'The new scheme does have shooter layout elements, but it's still run/walk, stop, shoot.'
In other words, the change means nothing. The triggers still aren't 'fire'. God this is stupid.
Look Capcom, its simple:
LT = Raise Weapon
LT + LS = Strafe/Walking Aim
RT = Fire/Throw
LB = Map
RB = Locate Partner
LS = Move
RS = Camera/Aim
Y/Triangle = Change Item
X/Square = Reload
B/Circle = Team Action/Call Partner
A/Cross = 'Action button'
LS Up + A/Cross = Sprint
LS Down + A/Cross = Quick Turn
The PS3 version being the same only with an option to choose between L1/R1 and L2/R2 for trigger duties. The set up should be customisable anyway.
The knife should be an equippable item that you can run around and slash with. Even if you can't move whilst shooting, stationary knife slashing is the stupidest thing in the game.
Its elementary stuff, Capcom.

So wait...if L-stick sideways strafes, then turning the camera with R also turns you character which is standard gears-like control (although I'm sure gears wasn't the first to do it), but you need to hold x to run, which means no running and turning, although i guess you could use your palm to tilt R.
Is it just me or does that seem a bit more unintuitive? or am i missing something

Not using the R1 as fire is hardly the biggest problem with the control scheme, if you're looking for some kind of traditional shooter setup. Not to mention it seems they set R1 as fire in the "Action" control scheme.
It is what it is, I guess. Though I can't help but feel they half-assed it. If they were gonna add a more traditional shooter control scheme, they might as well have went all the way and let you strafe while shooting. This new one is more like a poor man's shooter.

It still makes a huge difference, you can sidestep round a corner now, rather than having to orient yourself after you enter the doorway, or pass the wall.
Even if you cant shoot and move, its going to be a huuuuuge help towards shooting.

No strafe and shoot? Noooooooooooo! I need the strafing. I can't hit a thing without it! I usually use the right stick to point the gun in the general direction of the bad guys and use the slower strafing for precision. No strafe&shoot was the primary reason I couldn't play Dead Rising and RE4... It's so frustrating.....

I'm elated they retained the 'you have to stop to shoot' mechanic. It adds a real risk vs reward gameplay element that every other shoot on the market lacks: should you stay and fight, or try to run away?
Also, it is more realistic (not that that counts for much in a game for zombies, granted), seeing as it's nearly impossible to shoot accurately at wall while moving IRL.

Some "western gamers" won't be happy until the controls are exactly the same as Halo or Gears of War and the protagonist shaves his head and puts on metal armor. Why even continue to make RE games Capcom if you're just going to water them down and make them as generic as possible? Might as well stop making everything but bald space marine shooters to appeal to the average 20-year-old American Xbox 360 owner.

I really want to know something: Why does nearly every game that uses the left and right TRIGGERS on the 360 for shooting they change it on the PS3 to the L1/R1 buttons instead of the more triggerish L2/R2?
I remember reading the LT and RT on the 360 do the point and shooting and on the PS3 that's changed to R1 and L1. What gives?
Same thing with so many games. In COD4 PS3 the default control is R1 for shooting instead of the R2 like on the 360. I like more to shoot with a trigger than a button you know?

@MoeB: The Game was originally programmed on the PS3 and is Ported to 360 because game developers find it easier, also TGS is in Japan where ith PS3 is still more popular even though the 360 has seen recent success.
This doesn't mean one version will be way better, it will probably be that the 360 version has better shadows and online co-op and PS3 will have some Sixaxis Controlles and some extra Anti-Aliasing passes, and a huge disk install that will make the game load a second faster, (this isn't a fact it is just how most multi-platform games do it now-a-days)
