Dead Mountaineer's Hotel Stranded Until 2009
Posted by Stuart Houghton at 6:20 PM on October 14, 2008
Lighthouse Interactive has announced that their PC-based whodunit Dead Mountaineer's Hotel has been pushed back until early next year to allow the developers to "further polish the game and deliver a great experience."
Dead Mountaineer's is an atmospheric-looking mystery title based on the novel by Russian sci-fi writers Boris and Arkady Strugatsky. The Strugatskys also wrote Roadside Picnic - a tale of post apocalyptic scavengers that was a major influence on the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.
The game is described as a "character-driven, non-linear game with multiple endings" and looks - to us at least - like it might be a 3D point-and-click style adventure.
New Release Date Announced for Dead Mountaineer's Hotel [Lighthouse Interactive]

@Scorpinox: The ship was super fun! I still have guest passes to give away, anyone with a steamID want one?

Really... interesting. A phishing scam? You'd think this would be the easiest type of story to contact MS for comments on. Strange. Who knows. Everyone else including Giz are moving forward with the story without rumor tags so either someone contacted MS or nobody fact-checks anymore.

Whoops, didn't reply to the right thing, but this all the way, it's a classic.

Lighthouse did a good job on "The Ship", the multiplayer at least. Even though it wasn't really well received, it was extremely fun to play with the right people in the server (sadly that fun never lasted). It was kind of a multiplayer "whodunit".
I never tried the single player version of the game though because I couldn't really see it being any fun without real people, it might be interesting to go back and play that to see how they do in the single player arena.

@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): Kotaku had it up, but they pulled the story, because even though it was linked from Xbox.com, the site is rather sketchy.

@Ad-hominem: Aww man that never gets old <3 It's a testament to the theory that something can become so bad that it generates enough velocity while heading towards shit-dom that it escapes utter crap-space and warps directly to pure awesome :)

This game seems to have the Heavy Rain color palette to it. I almost got confused for a second.
...
Also, it seems like every site on the internet accept for Kotaku is pinging this up: [www.joystiq.com]
...I even sent in a tip a while back :( Oh well...

"Like it might be a 3D point-and-click style adventure"?
Really?
Because that's exactly what it looks like. I mean, I wouldn't even bother speculating.
Of course, I can understand their reluctance to mention the genre, considering the last big Point-And-Click release was this:

I remember buying a game called still life III. If this is anything like that, I say "flush pocket"

For a sec I thought it was a parody of Dead Space.

Hopefully the delay will give them time to give this game a GOOD title. Amirite?

@Scorpinox: I loved the original Half-Life mod that was The Ship. However, my little brother purchased the Source version, and the severe lack of players turned me off from buying my own copy.

I like point and clicks, but "Dead Mountaineer's Hotel?" Kind of an odd title.

Kick ass!!! Dead Mountaineer's Hotel is a great story. I still have yet to see the Estonian film "Hukkunud Alpinisti' hotell" which is based off DMH.
It's nice to see the Strugatsky's material getting more attention, they definitely have some wonderful stories.

I'm confused- is it a Hotel for Dead Mountaineers? Is the Mountaineer's Hotel deceased? Is it a Hotel that a now currently deceased Mountaineer once was in ownership of?

Shouldn't the name of authors be romanized as Strugacki?

@em: Better than the title when it was first announced - they initially had it translated as Hotel "At a Lost Climber".

I'd like to take the opportunity to mention that my previously unanticipated game: "Mathew Montgomery's Year of The Inconspicuous Cap" has been pushed back to late 2012 citing issues of it not being made yet.
